The Prince Edward County council met last night and decided to reduce the development charges by 50% in both the rural and urban areas of the county. At present the development charges for a newly built three bedroom home are a little over $18,000, and this will be reduced to approximately $12,000. Initially the plan was to only offer this reduction in the urban high service areas, but it was decided to extend the break to the entire county. There has always been a bit of a difference of opinion in the county as residents try to balance economic growth with the preservation of the county's more bucolic nature. Perhaps it would have made more sense if I had come here in the summer and taken some nice pictures, and maybe I will, but I also believe there is a certain beauty in winter. Perhaps it's because nobody else is around and I'm in a rather contemplative mood. Or maybe because I just happen to be driving by and had my camera handy. This is Roblin Lake, a small inland lake in Prince Edward County. It's very beautiful in the summer, there's a small beach here, and sometimes people come here for a swim, the water's very clean. Usually. Until 2007, the Salvation Army had a rather large summer camp on the shores of Roblin Lake. Under privileged children from all over Ontario would spend their summers here for over 80 years. The hamlet of Ameliasburgh is one of the prettier places in Prince Edward County. It was named after Princess Amelia, the fifteenth child of King George III. I suppose Amelia's children wouldn't have had much of a shot at becoming kings or queens, so I hope she took some solace in having this picturesque little place named after her. Ameliasburgh is situated right on County Road 19, a quiet and curvy road, very pleasant for a motorcycle trip in the summer months, and for such a small place, there are a surprising number of things to see, especially if one is interested in local history. The old church on the Main Street, originally built in 1868 as a Wesleyan Methodist Church was converted into the Ameliasburgh Historical Museum in 1968. Prince Edward County has a number of rural villages and hamlets where the pace of life seems a little less rushed and things don't change very quickly. When you start driving into the more southern parts of the County it can almost feel like stepping back in time. The roads are a little narrower and less straight, you won't come across franchised stores or restaurants, and you'd better make sure your tank has some gas in it, as there are some stretches where you won't encounter a gas station. Luckily enough, the village of Milford does have a gas station, so if you're in the area and running low on gas, head for Milford. Mariners Park Museum is located near South Bay in Prince Edward County. It's one of those interesting places where you can walk around and feel like you're the only person in the world, a bit like Euro Disneyland, except without the rides. This is the appeal of Prince Edward County though, there's rarely a rush here. The museum is basically an outdoor collection of some of the more interesting artifacts from the County's maritime history.  More than two thirds of all shipwrecks in Lake Ontario have occured in the waters just off of Prince Edward County. Over 50 wrecks have been located to date, and the area has been dubbed as the Graveyard of Lake Ontario. Scuba diving is a popular activity around here. Lake on the Mountain in Prince Edward County is about a five minute drive from Picton on the way to the Glenora ferry. It's a great half hour stop (unless you happen to be having your lunch or dinner at the Lake on the Mountain Resort - a fabulous restaurant that serves some of the great local Prince Edward County wines), in which case I'm sure you'll be staying a bit longer.Lake on the Mountain is a natural oddity that sits 203 feet above the Bay of Quinte with no visible source of the water. The Mohawks believed the lake was bottomless and used to offer gifts to the spirits here, as they believed it was a sacred place where the three sisters, Corn, Squash and Beans lived. The boardwalk at Picton Harbour is called The Glen Allan Public Boardwalk in honour of the S.S. Glen Allan, a freight steamer that worked out of the harbour. The S.S. Glen Allan used to load up with cheese and apples in Picton and other Prince Edward County harbours and transport them to the markets in Montreal. Picton Harbour used to be a very busy commercial harbour, a centre for shipping agricultural products across the Great Lakes to other destinations in Canada and the U.S.A. Today the harbour is less a centre of commerce and more of a recreational spot. The marina at the harbour is maintained by the County itself and there's a public boat launch.
