Canadians looking to Invest in Real Estate might want to consider the United States as a place to buy. The downturn in the American economy and housing market along with the rising value of our Loonie makes now a very good time to buy. According to an article in the Toronto Star yesterday buying property in Florida, with its huge increase in prices in recent years can produce very dramatic savings. The article goes on to say that "a typical two- bedroom, 1,200-square-foot condo on a golf course in Naples that would have sold for up to $350,000 (U.S.) last year now goes for $250,000, or $229,250 (Canadian)." With a depreciation in values of approximately 30% and an appreciation of over 20% Canadian dollar vs the US dollar over the last year the Star goes on to say that it would have cost...

A Marathon of Hope A Tribute to Julie Slater The 2007 Terry Fox Run is Sunday, Sept 16 Hornets………It is funny what sometimes triggers a memory… hornets, each and every year at the Terry Fox run we have oranges, apples, MacDonald’s Pies, Tim Bits….little treats for the participants to nibble on when they make their grand entrance over the finish line. But it is the uninvited guests that I remember…the wasps…hornets…by the hundreds…they come in droves…buzzing around, wanting to crawl over the food….driving us nuts……I can picture Wilda Clark fanning them away year after year….Julie…remember your hornet traps…..they always caught one or two…..but the rest …what pests…..but always an annual part of the day. In the Real Estate Business catching the consumers eye for the homes you have listed is always uppermost in a Realtors mind. To that end we have started providing our vendors with their own web site located on our home site. True, there are service providers out there that provide a service that would give the property its own web address but how long will it take to be found on the Internet? Unless they see the web address on a sign or in an add it is a waste. We recently put a property up on its own site and with in 1 day it showed up in a keyword search for its own address "57 Robmar". There is also the flexibility to customize by having it on our site that is not available on a cookie cuter site that is provided by a service provider. If we minimize the cost of the web presence it l...

The Hidden Treasures of Uxbridge The Dowling Scrolls Just occasionally, Uxbridge is treated to a rare glimpse of history. To the enjoyment and amazement of all who see them, The Dowling Scrolls are only occasionally unrolled and brought to light for a significant display. Rev James Thomas Dowling created this astounding one of a kind work of art during his tenure at the original Uxbridge Baptist Church during the 1870's He painted them in a shed behind the church. The scrolls are 7 feet high, and there is a total length of 446 feet, painted in oil house paint on cotton canvas. The 40 panels are approximately 10 feet long, each one depicting a different scene from Biblical times. The attention to detail, the combination of colors, and the quality of his art are so inspiring. These scroll...

When I was growing up we live in the States. We immigrated to Nashville Tennesee of all places. My Father decided that we could have a better life in the U.S. so he boarded a plane from England to Nashville never having been there before. After 12 months he sent for my mother. I was 15 months old when I 'met' my Dad again. I don't think I liked him much at first. After all I didn't really know him. My parents loved Tennesee. The weather was beautiful, they had a nice house in a nice neighborhood, they had nice friends. But something was lacking. The packed up their belongings in search of what was missing. I was 5 at the time. We moved this time to Charlotte NC. I loved it there. I had many friends and enjoyed swimming daily in the Summer. But my parents still hadn't found what they w...

Shhh, Don't tell anyone else about Uxbridge. Why not? Because we want to keep the small town feeling alive. Uxbridge has been developing steadily over the years and that's great because we want our town to prosper, but we don't want it to grow so much that we lose the quaintness of our lovely community. That's the consensus of the majority of people I speak with in the place I now call my hometown. That's how I feel as well.We moved to Uxbridge three years ago to provide our kids with a safer environment to grow up in, fresher air, countryside, and the kind of starry nights that you just don't get in the city.  We have never looked back.  I love falling asleep to the sound of frogs croaking in the nearby pond, crickets chirping and yes the occasional barking of coyotes making their way ...

Last winter I was complaining to a close friend of mine, Jill. We were discussing the lack of direction in our lives, the lack of motivation and the need to do something fulfilling. We'd had many such conversations over the winter months. Jill had been out of work. She was suddenly single and approaching 50. We were both depressed. Something had to be done.I hear these stories from many friends and acquaintances of similar age. Is it mid-life crisis? I guess you could call it that. The need to find yourself. That's what I was searching for. I didn't really know how I was going to do that but we discussed it nearly every time we talked. One day Jill said, "OK, today we are going to do something pro-active for ourselves." She explained that she and I should search the local College course ...
