History and Heritage - Uxbridge OntarioThe York Durham Heritage Railway Built in the late 1800's to transport grain and lumber it was known as the Toronto and Nippissing Railway (T&N). Once completed it ran from Toronto to Coboconk. The rail line went through many ownership changes over the years and eventually ended up as part of the Canadian National Railway system owned by the Government of Canada in 1920. All That remains of the line today is the section from Uxbridge to Toronto as over the years sections of the rail line were taken out of service.Passenger service which began in 1871 is continued today by GO Transit with trains running from Stouffivle to Toronto. Life Lease A growing housing option for seniors in Ontario is a unit in a life lease building. A few years back I had the opportunity to see first hand what a life lease was all about. I initially became involved with the process here in Uxbridge as a member of a group who were looking into alternative housing solutions for seniors in Uxbridge. I continued to work with members of the group who felt it could be done as a development rather than the more conventional way at the time (a church or organization sponsored project) which often takes years to get off the ground. Uxbridge Arena - Hockey and Ice Skating - An Uxbridge Tradition   Uxbridge Arena is combination community center and arena with twin pads. It will be presented to council at their meeting this afternoon. Over the years Uxbridge has held a fairly tight reign on tax increases with several years in recent memory having zero mill rate increase and a stable assessment system.
