I just returned home from the meeting about the Gananoque and District Humane Society and WOW oh WOW - great news . . . We're receiving a grant of $300,000.00 !!!!   It is going towards the new facilities that are badly needed.  There was alot of excitement in the small group that attended and lots of promises from people wanting to help out on the Task Force to raise more funds for the building fund. All in all it was a successful evening  and well worth the time.   Who's going to join us ? What about YOU????

I was sent the following letter and felt it important enough to share with you all on-line: Dear Susan, Animal welfare in the Gananoque area needs to take a great leap forward.  The Gananoque & District Humane Society must relocate to larger premises in order to carry on our mandate. On Thursday, October 30th 2008, friends of the Society are meeting at: Christ Church, 35 Princess St, Gananoque at 6:00 pm                                                                                   That night we will form  Community Action Task Force to determine the facility requirements for the new location.  The Task Force will also develop and carry out a Capital Funding Campaign to ensure this facility will be placed on a solid financial footing now and in the future.     Our speaker for the eve...

As we approach Halloween, I'm reminded of an old Irish Ghost Story . . .   This story happened a while ago in  Dublin , and even though it  sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, its true!!!!  John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm.  The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door...   only to realise there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on.  The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw  a curve approaching. Scared, he started to...

I wrote a post awhile ago promoting the book THE GIFT OF FEAR which teaches us survival techniques using our natural instincts.  Today I heard a tip that falls into this same category of keeping safe.  It was originally written about keeping safe at home, at night, anytime actually these days!  However, I feel this is an excellent tip for Realtors when showing property too!! REALTORS -  keep your keys in your hand at all times when showing property or holding an Open House.  You never know when you're going to need your own personal alarm! Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbours, your parents your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across as well as paying attention yourself! Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside  y...

Who do the Rules of Road apply to?  Observing the traffic patterns today would indicate that the majority of drivers feel they are above the law.  That the imposed speed limits are simply a suggestion.  When you pass a road sign stating a maximum speed of 60mph what speed would you normally be traveling?  60? 65? 70? 75?  higher??   When you see a police car do you smile and wave or does your heart leap up into your throat and send you into a panic?  Guilty conscience anyone??   I spent many an hour on the highways these past few days and I amused myself by taking note of the drivers who raced past me: There were the kids of course, thrilled with their new found approval to be driving the roads at all, always in a hurry.  There goes the young executive with too much on the go to worry a...

"The tongue is like a razor;   you can do good or cut someone with your words"  ~Author unknown.    Contrary to the esteemed Dr Freud's theory that the primary human drives are to seek pleasure and to avoid pain,  I believe what we want most is to find happiness and to find meaning or purpose.  We want to know that we have lived fully and experienced joy with a deep feeling of contentment.  Country singer, Tim McGraw's song comes to mind:  "To Live Like You are Dying".    Happiness is about the moments in our lives and the meaning or purpose is about our sense of connection. In Anna Karenina, Tolstoy writes that "happy families are all alike; but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way".    That seems to ring true when you speak with happy people - they each have certain things...

"One Person can make a difference - and every person must try"  ~ John F. Kennedy "When two or more people come together in the spirit of harmony ...it's like putting LIGHTNING in a Bottle!  The Teddy Stallard story and the Blue Ribbon story have the capacity to reach out to people to make a huge difference in all humanity. We must be the difference we want to make." ~ Mary Robinson Reynolds 1000 Islands, Gananoque, Canada This October 25th, on "Make a Difference Day"  I am incorporating the "Who I am Makes a Difference" Blue Ribbon  ceremony into, what will hopefully become, an annual event in my community.  We have too many people not realizing their full potentional.  Not taking pride in who and what they are.   We also have nighbours who are living their lives by example, getting no...

This is a followup of Lara O'Keefe's scary reminder of how vulnerable we can be:Trust Your Instincts  There is a fabulous book called "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin De Becker:  Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence.  The Author says "victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They may distrust the fear, or it may impel them to some action that saves their lives. A leading expert on predicting violent behavior, de Becker believes we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive.  Far from being silly intuitions, often these can truly show when something is wrong and violence might be imminent; if listened to, along with information about how violent peop...

Balance returns to recreational property markets across Canada this year, says RE/MAX Mississauga, ON (June 10, 2008) - After an extended period of extraordinary growth, more balanced market conditions have emerged in recreational property markets across the country, according to a report released today by RE/MAX. The RE/MAX Recreational Property Report found that a substantial increase in the supply of recreational properties listed for sale, combined with fewer buyers overall, characterized most recreational markets this year. Of the 45 markets surveyed, 91 per cent (or 41 markets) were in the transition stage, moving from strong sellers into balanced market conditions. The only exceptions were Salt Spring Island, two markets in Saskatchewan - Last Mountain Lake and Qu'Appelle Lakes a...

What kind of a dog you have tells more about you then you know.  From pure breeds to the best loved mutts, each dog will have a personality or habit that it shares with the owner.  (Some dog owners even share their dogs look - you've seen them on Letterman) I have 2 Australian Shepherds and if we believe the above, what this says about me is that I am: Easy going, a perpetual puppy that loves to play. Courageous, loyal and affectionate.  Excellent children's companion and great with active children.  A devoted friend and guardian,  naturally protective.  Very lively, agile and attentive -  eager to please, with a sixth sense about what is wanted. Highly intelligent and easy to train. Though aggressive when at work, gentle with human friends. Needs lots of exercise and a job to do, very ...

Gananoque, ON. With a May 31st like no other I've seen, we managed to raise $1500 for Breast Cancer Research.  Our thanks to the community who, throughout a monsoon-like day, continually showed their support for us and our cause. Our thanks also goes towards the many merchants who donated their services or products to help us out. We'll be back next year, bigger and better but hopefully not wetter!

The stuff you no longer need will help fund the cure for breast cancer . . .  Yard Sale for the Cure is an organization that raises money for Breast Cancer research and treatment by holding a massive series of Yard Sales in selected neighbourhoods across Canada. In 2005, the inaugural event was held in the Toronto Beaches. It was a huge success, raised $45 000 and brought people together with a great sense of community and purpose. Now a growing number of people from across Canada are taking on this idea and Yard Sale for the Cure will be launched in markets across the country including Gananoque, Ontario. The local RE/MAX office, Riverview Realty Ltd., will be hosting one huge sale for the community at their office on King St East in Gananoque.   It will begin at 8am and continue all d...
