No matter what poll you're reading, we in the Real Estate business don't seem to fare very well in public opinion.  This month's Reader's Digest has an interesting article "Renewing the Public Trust" and in the category of the "Most Trusted Industries",  Real Estate doesn't even make the list!!!!  This is disturbing as  Cellular phone companies came in at # 28 and Tobacco companies #29 !! In the "professions we trust most" section, we ranked #36 with Psychics, Politicians, Car Salespeople and telemarketers falling behind us.   Plumbers were ahead of us at #20 - what's that all about? In the category of Canada's Most Trusted Brands; Residential Realtor: I'm pleased to say RE/MAX wins!!!  from our Head Office, this press release: Reader's Digest names RE/MAX 'Most Trusted Residential Real...

Gananoque, On I know you had to read that twice and I don't blame you but I have always said Never say Never!   Anyone who knows me, understands why I do not believe in holding Open Houses to get a home sold. It does not work (less than 1% of homes sell thru this method)   I think it is incredibly unfair to the Sellers when the intent is usually to collect new clients for other homes, not to sell theirs!  However,  my clients were going out of town and therefore would not be inconvenienced and they were fully aware of why other agents hold houses open.  (and I had just put up a sign rider with the asking price in bright blue print, which was getting alot of attention as it was far lower than the over-priced homes on the street) So at the last minute we decided to take advantage of the o...

I'm a bit late posting this as every day last week, when I attempted to post, I received the ever-lovely proxy error message!!   So, better late than never: Easter Broccoli 2 cups partially cooked broccoli1 cup chopped celery1 cup chopped red pepper1 tin cream of mushroom soup1 cup sour creamgrated chedder to cover top Mix soup and sour cream together.  In separate casserole dish, mix vegetables.  Pour soup mixture over vegetables and then top with grated cheese. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes.  This may be made ahead and heated through. Serves 6  If you need to double this, cut down on sour cream as it goes runny.

Gananoque, Ontario John Nalon is Gananoque's "Mr History" . . . and he knows more about this town of ours than anyone else around.  He runs the Gananoque Historical Society and is a 'walking encyclipedia' about our history. We are so fortunate to have him living in Gananoque and being so generous of his time and knowledge.  He is the keeper of the stories!

What do you think?  Is a 16 year old mature enough to handle the responsibility of a Credit Card?  In a recent article "Provide 16 year olds with credit cards", financial expert Mellody Hobson of Ariel Capital Management says, "teens as young as 16 should be given the chance to charge."   (I'm guessing she doesn't have children!) Now I'm not a parent, nor do I play one on TV, but am I the only one that thinks this spells disaster?  I have very vivid memories of what it was like being 16.  Don't start to tell me how times have changed because children really haven't.  16 year olds will buy for the sake of buying;  they will treat friends because they can! Adults perpetuate the instant gratification mode that we see in teenagers.  Adults can't handle credit as seen in our recent world eco...

It's ILLEGAL  in Ontario to talk on your cell phone, text, or use an ipod while driving. (as well as the many countries and states listed below) [update:  had to remove the list and add the link for the time being - sorry!]  I did attempt to use my headset for awhile but found it more distracting than actually holding the phone to my ear!  :0)  I have been successful in not using my phone whilst driving since the new year and I have found that letting calls go to voicemail hasn't posed a problem.  People realize that it is no longer possible to reach others 24/7 but what they need to learn is how to leave effective messages.  I get annoyed at people simply saying "Hi it's Mike, call me!"     Really?  I recognized your number AND your voice - WHAT DID YOU WANT??!! Or, "Hi it's Mike.  It ...

I found a full leg of pork the other day and decided I just had to have it.  Didn't have a clue what I was going to do with it but I had to have it.  So I researched online and found this fabulous Cuban recipe by Martha Stewart.  With that settled, what to have on the side?  Well Cuba Libres and Mojito as cocktails for sure :0)  That was easy!! How about Black Beans and Rice!   What else would go with it?   . . .   Twice fried Plantains!   OMG  was that a great meal if I do say so myself :0)  The flavours with fabulous and everyone left happy. To quote Martha: "Not to be confused with ham, a fresh leg of pork is relatively uncommon today, despite its sumptuous layer of excess fat and accompanying flavor. This natural cushioning is rendered during roasting, enveloping the meat in goodnes...

With the 251st birthday of Scotland's national poet Robert Burns being celebrated on, before, or after Jan. 25, I think it only appropriate to acknowledge the great little man here. I have celebrated Burns Night a good many times and I give you some personal background: When I was 25 years old, I flew to Scotland to meet my love and I was proposed to in Edinburgh Castle.  We travelled to Ayr to visit with friends and family and they took me on a tour of Robert Burns former home and surrounding area, and it was then my love for Scotland took root.   Years later, I moved to Northern Ireland and once a month I would take the ferry over to Troon, Scotland (just down from Ayr) and I would, over a weekend, drive the triangle of Glasgow, Aberdeen, an Edingburgh in no order and then back on the...

Gananoque, ON  This is a decision which many people face, and the decision is not as easy to make as it may sound. As a homeowner, you can reasonably expect the equity in your home to increase over time as your mortgage is paid down. That, combined with regular appreciation in property values, can be a rapid and rewarding way to increase your net worth. In contrast, the person renting over the same amount of time is left with no property investment but may have enjoyed lower living expenses and the opportunity to invest in other opportunities. When comparing owning to renting, you have to add up all of the figures, including the cost of your home, the size of your down payment, utilities, immediate repairs, interest rates and insurance, and compare them with how much you are currently s...

Gananoque, ON Even though household debt relative to income has risen sharply in Canada, it is well below U.S. and British levels.  In a reactive rather than proactive response, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said in a recent interview; "Canada may require people taking out mortgages to come up with a larger down-payment if it looks like indebtedness is getting too high. The likely action we will take is to increase the size of the down-payment from 5 per cent to a higher number and reduce the amortization -- bring it down from 35 years to something less." What this means to the hopeful future homeowner is that you'd better JUMP into the housing market pretty darn quick! No more sitting on the fence.  No more waiting for the stars to be aligned and the moon to be in the right quarter.  J...
