Gananoque, Ontario All this week we have requested that people drop off their non-perishable food items for our "Put your Heart into it"campaign for our local Gananoque Food Bank.  And today, with the sun shining brightly, my lovely husband and I went door to door asking for whatever food items that could be spared.   It was such fun!  Out of all the homes we visited, only one person said no!  I'll say no more. I got quite a kick out of several elderly men who were frightened that they might give us something that their wife would need for supper tonite!  I gave them my cell number and told them to call me if their wife needed something, lol I was introduced to many beautiful dogs that I'd not met before and I was able to scritch a few kitties too. An extra bonus was visiting with some ...

Gananoque, Ontario We're a town of gorgeous, century old homes, many of which have become B & Bs, restaurants and Inns. Friday's Funny is at the bottom of this so you'll have to scroll down! ****************************************************************************** My husband was amused when I rescued this little stem from the middle of my back yard (dog playground) last fall.  I decided to stick it in some dirt and do the whole Charlie Brown Christmas Tree thing!   At least I would have something green and growing, maybe? Well imagine my surprise to discover blooms on it this morning with our many feet of snow as a backdrop!  The poor little thing was a violet trying to thrive in an unkind environment. All it needed was some TLC! Who do you know that could thrive if given a little bit of what is needed? Someone you see in the mirror each day? Give yourself some necessary TLC this weekend and see wha...

Gananoque - Nothing scares me more than the thought of a house fire. I was furious with my husband for days after, in a dream, he opted to save his golf clubs instead of the cats, during a fire. Yes, a dream or a nightmare. And I can only imagine how it would be so very much more traumatic and devastating in real life!! Well, here in Gananoque, we saw another horrible fire on the weekend. A fire that has left a family of 6 homeless! (Fortunately, they were not hurt in the fire) Our Gananoque Fire Department was called out around 6:15pm Saturday night to 321 Stone Street in response to a grease fire in the kitchen of the home. The official report says the kitchen was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived and that it was badly damaged. The firefighters remained at the scene until aro...

Gananoque, On We have an old brick detached garage that looks like a gardener's cottage.  In the summer, the bricks are caught up in a sun trap and are just a mecca for flowers.  Today, I noticed this drift of snow that seemed to fall off the brick wall like a blanket on the bed.  Upon closer inspection, the bricks of the garage had imprinted on the snow drift.  I thought this was pretty cool as I've never seen anything like it before.  I hope you can see it in the photos.  (my husband says I'm just a big kid but I really thought this was cool and threatened the dogs within an inch of their lives!  So far, they've stayed clear.)

Dear Ms Emo:  Why are there not more homes for sale in Gananoque?  We are seriously considering putting our home on the market but we're now wondering are we missing some vital clue?  Do others know what we do not?  Why are there so few homes for sale in Gananoque at the moment?  Should we wait until the spring or summer to list our home for sale? Signed,                                                      Clueless in Gananoque  ************************************************************************************ Dear Clueless, That's a very good question and one I've been hearing alot over the past few months.  At the time of writing, there are 60 residential properties listed for sale in the Town of Gananoque.  This includes condos too. They range in price from $98,900 up to $569,400....

I love my life! Today I was able to enjoy a leisurely  lunch with a client, now a friend, at Anthony's in Gananoque. You can find it across the street from our Town Hall in the Town Park, situated in a lovely red brick century home. In the summer I love dining on their fresh air patio - after all we're in the Gateway to the 1000 Islands! Today, it would have been a wee bit cold at -25 degrees. But it was the perfect day for us to enjoy a warm and cozy lunch inside. Anthony's has an extensive menu serving dishes such as Prime Rib, Seafood specialties, and several Italian dishes. You can also enjoy steak, stir fry and fajitas as well as full breakfast, lunch and dinner menues and their daily specials. We decided to order off the luncheon menu today. My friend loves Chicken Caesar Wraps an...

Gananoque, Ontario Boy oh boy, do I love seeing the great big sack of cash arriving from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming people! Our very own version of Santa!! Yesterday they dropped by Gananoque with $387,396.00, as their way of saying thanks for hosting one of its casinos. That amount was matched at the office of the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, whose border with Gananoque is straddled by Casino Thousand Islands. The total amount being $774,792.00 represents 5% of the casino's gross slot machine revenue from the first 450 machines in the house. Since the gaming establishment opened in June 2002, we have shared more than $29.3 million. Through December, more than 8.6 million patrons have visited the casino! That's alot of people playing in our lovely little town - will y...

As you're aware Ottawa has announced some changes to its mortgage regulations in light of concern about increasing Canadian household debt. Here's the summary from CMHC:  The new measures: Reduce the maximum amortization period to 30 years from 35 years for new government-backed insured mortgages with loan-to-value ratios of more than 80 per cent. This will significantly reduce the total interest payments Canadian families make on their mortgages, allow Canadian families to build up equity in their homes more quickly, and help Canadians pay off their mortgages before they retire. Lower the maximum amount Canadians can borrow in refinancing their mortgages to 85 per cent from 90 per cent of the value of their homes. This will promote saving through home ownership and limit the repackagin...

What's the saying . . . You've come a long way baby! From a 1943 magazine: How to select the most efficient women and know how to use them . . . If you can get them, pick young married women. They are less likely to be flirtatious and still have the pep and interest to work hard. When you have to use older women, you'll find they are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. You will have to impress upon them the importance of friendliness and courtesy. General experience indicates that 'husky' girls - those a little on the heavy side - are likely to be more even-tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters. Retain a physician to give each woman a special physical examination to determine whether the woman has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit...

Gananoque, Ontario Few meals are more satisfying than a hearty tagine - the rich, fragrant stew that forms the basis of traditional Moroccan cooking.  This heavenly dish is served from its own elegant serving vessel which is also called a Tagine.  Aromatic and syrupy, zesty and spicy, or sweet and fragrant are just some of the words that come to mind when thinking about tagines.  A dish of tender meat or succulent vegetables, simmered to perfection in buttery sauces with fruit, herbs, honey and chiles, an authentic tagine is in a  class of its own. What we have simmering away in the oven at the Emo household today is Lamb Tagine with Dates, Almonds and pistachios.  It is a Moroccan favourite at weddings and other family feasts but we love it on cold wintry days!  Serves 4 2-3 tbsps of o...
