Furnace flues and chimneys are often neglected. Many homeowners presume that the utility company or their fuel supplier is monitoring them, and don't realize this isn't necessarily true until something goes wrong. As a result, bird's nests and other debris sometimes cause soot and gases to drift back into the house, causing a potentially dangerous situation. All types of chimneys should have regular, professional inspection and maintenance. Most chimney sweeps service all kinds of flues, not just masonry chimneys or those attached to wood-burning appliances. The build-up of soot and creosote on flue walls can loosen and fall over time, aided by moisture in the exhaust gases, sometimes filling the clean-out cavity and blocking the flue. Corrosive elements in these gases can affect both met...

One of the best things about Campbellford is the number of things to do here throughout the year. As with most communities in this area, the summer season is much busier in terms of festivals and activities, but there are always many things to do and places to visit even in the winter. Of course, hockey takes up a lot of time in the winter, and the Campbellford Rebels are a very well supported team in the Ontario hockey Association. They have been Ontario's "Junior C" champions in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2012, so you know there's a very solid hockey program in this town. It's not easy to have a championship team in this province with almost every town having an entry into the various leagues. This entire area has very strong ties to the military, many people who have spent time...

Campbellford is one of those smaller towns in central Ontario that's definitely worth visiting. There's so much to see and do here. It's located almost exactly half way between Toronto and Ottawa on a very scenic stretch of the Trent river which is very well known locally as a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts. The best way to get to Campbellford from the 401 is simply to exit on Highway 30 at Brighton and drive north for about twenty minutes. You can't miss it. You'll be glad you didn't.                                                             The town's life began is 1834 with a land grant of 1800 acres from the Crown to two brothers, Major David Campbell and Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Campbell. The name "Campbellford" is eponymous, simply where one of these two fine chaps crossed the...

s How often do you come across a place that's designed to keep alive the dying art of picnicking? Not very often I'd wager. Well, such a place exists in Campbellford, and judging by the grafitti, it's a popular gathering spot for anarchists and occultists. Perhaps they enjoy a good picnic just like the rest of us. This pretty little spot is right in town, and other than the grafitti on the sign at the entrance seems to be very well maintained. There was nobody there when I visited, but I can imagine in the spring when the weather gets warm, this would be a great place for kids and their owners to come and eat a sandwich and drink a box of juice. It is a very pleasant setting right on the Trent River, near the heart of town. You can see the concrete piers in the river where the old CN tr...

The Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge is a must-see destination if you happen to be anywhere near Campbellford Ontario. As the name would suggest, it's a suspension bridge across the Ranney Gorge within sight of the Ranney Falls on the Trent River. There's a power generating station at Ranney falls, just as there are at many locations up and down the Trent River. Being a bridge, there are two pretty easy ways to get to it, one on either side. The best way is through Ferris Provincial Park, just a five minute drive south of Campbellford. The trail leading up to the bridge offers some magnificent views of the bridge itself. The bridge is 300 feet across, and about 30 feet above the water. From what I've read there are people who believe this is a bit daunting and prefer not to go across. I g...

It's going to be a busy weekend for me this weekend. If only people knew how tough it is to sit in someone else's living room and watch T.V. for a couple of hours. So I'm calling on all Quinte house hunters to stop by, have a look, be charmed (both by me and the homes I'm selling) and present me with offers on these fine homes. First up I will be at 44 Walt Road on Saturday July 28th 2012 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This beautiful three bedroom home is perfect for people who are looking to buy a three bedroom home in Smithfield.   Situated on a large country lot, minutes from the public school, this home, originally built in 1879 has been totally redone in the last four years and has newer everything, including roof, windows, doors, drywall, insulation, etc etc.   I could go on and on, but y...

The Seymour Conservation Area is a short five minute drive south of Campbellford on Highway 30. Like the Goodrich-Loomis Conservation Area, it is run by the Lower Trent Conservation Authority and most of the same rules apply. No horse riding, dogs must be on a leash, no overnight camping and no open fires. It is, however a great place for a day trip if you're looking for some serenity or for something to do that might tire the kids out on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Admission is free, so you can't quibble about the price. The Conservation area is on a 200 acre parcel of land with over six kilometers of walking trails. As the saying goes (and I've used it a couple of times myself), nature abounds in this place. This area is part of the Lower Trent Conservation Authority's project to reha...

Hoards station is a small community in Northumberland County, just a couple of minutes west of the Hastings/Northumberland county line on County Road 8. You will pass through Hoards Station when you're driving from Stirling to Campbellford, but if you blink too long it's possible that you'll miss it. It's a very peaceful place and what many people would consider an old fashioned farming community. Hoards Station is home to the Hoards Station Sale Barn, which is the only three ring auction market for livestock in this part of Ontario. It's quite something to go and see the auctions that take place every Tuesday at noon. One of the best things about going and seeing the auction is that there's a home cooked meal provided by a different church group every week. It's quite the atmosphere, a...

A local mortgage broker in my area sent me an email which I thought was very funny, so I'm just going to pass it along. I don't know who came up with this, but I thought it was a pretty good take on how different people would view the same property.
