On the way home from visiting grandchildren recently, Don and I stopped in Heavener, Oklahoma to see the Heavener Rune Stone. Heavener is a couple hours drive from Idabel, if you’re not in a hurry and you won’t be… or you shouldn’t be. Highway 259 north of Broken Bow to Heavener is “pretty hilly” and winding at times, with lots of overlooks. Heavener is home to the Heavener Rune Stone on Poteau Mountain. According to the information at the state park where the Rune Stone is kept, the earliest sightings of it date to 1830 by Choctaw Indians on a hunting expedition. This huge rock is 12 feet high, 10 feet wide, and 16 inches thick. There are 8 symbols carved into the rock.
