Wordless Wednesday: Rural Mailbox  We were in a rural area of upstate New York in Roxbury, in the Catskill Mountains, for our niece's wedding in May 2016 (we even had some snow while we were there). We had some free time and decided to visit a local maple sugar company, and drive around a bit to explore. I spied this quirky mailbox, which seemed particularly well suited to an area where there are a number of farms. 10/07/2020

Union Grove DistilleryAt the Hudson Valley Wine and Food Fest I became aquainted with the Union Grove Distillery located in Arkville New York, a town in the Catskill Region.This distillery produces vodka known as  VLY Creek Vodka which is made from apple and wheat. Meet half of the team, Todd and Jeanine Pascarella.  I went over to speak with a friend  and she introduced Todd as her son.  Todd is a trained scientist and decided to follow his passion of creating a special vodka. The other half of the team is Brian and Penny Mulder , I did not get to meet them. From what I have heard Brian and Todd make a great team. Union Grove Distillery offers tours and tasting. Snow, Rhubarb and the Catskill Mountains We were in the Catskills in Roxbury NY this past weekend visiting family for a wedding, and despite being the middle of May the weather was pretty winter-like, with temps one day in the high 30s and heavy snow flurries both Saturday and Sunday.  From this Southern California guy there were plenty of words! A Visit to Roxbury Mountain Maple in Hobart, NY I’m a big fan of maple syrup, and have been for years (sorry, but no Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup for my home-made waffles or cottage cheese pancakes), so our visit to Roxbury Mountain Maple in Hobart, NY in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, this past weekend while we were in neighboring Roxbury for a family wedding was a real treat. Do you know where maple syrup comes from? No, not maple syrup trees, but close. Sap is gathered from sugar maple trees. The sap, I learned, is mostly water and so that must be boiled off to yield the syrup (the flyer from Roxbury Mountain Maple says 40 to 50 gallons of sap will yield a gallon of syrup). If you own a pond and want to stock it, you must first get a farm fish pond license from DEC before picking up your trout order. Must prepay by Sept. 29 and pick up is October 4. As I'm ever happy to help, I thought I'd put up this link back over to my hometown's website.  Check it out here.I just happened to click on the site for Roxbury and the first thing I noticed was the Quicktime video that comes up.  It's a quick couple minutes highlighting Roxbury's Turn of the Century Days this coming Memorial Day Weekend.It's a great event.  Many of the townsfolk dress up in old time garb, there's horse and buggy rides throughout the day, plenty of food, a beer tent (a personal favorite of mine) courtesy of the Public Lounge, and the Keator Cup, the vintage baseball tournament played by the old time rules.  If you're a baseball fan, you should see one at least once.Any way, check out the site and the video, then come back here and let me know if you have any idea who t... 05/11/2007
