Before family or friends come to visit over , take care of these tasks to make your home safe and comfortable. Visits from friends and family are common for many of us. Are you ready? Before company arrives, it pays to look around your home and see it as your guests might. If you’ve been living with a drippy faucet, a poorly flushing toilet, or a sticking door for months, you may have forgotten that these things need attention. A little TLC can make your home friendlier, safer, and more comfortable for your guests. Here are eight things to think about: 1Be sure your appliances are in good working order as you’ll probably need all of them. For repairs you can do yourself, see the Repair & Care articles in the Appliance section. For repairs beyond the scope of your abilities, call an app...

As it turns out, some of the most successful people who have ever lived were people who got stuff done one step at a time. Everyone wants to succeed at the big stuff—but it’s when you develop an eye for the ‘smaller’ things that you really begin to make the world a better place.    Not as many people care about the smaller things—but small things add up to make big things. Long-term goals are achieved in small portions, and small portions of goals are achieved in our daily routines and rituals. Choosing to succeed often begins with the ‘random’ moments when nothing else is going on. What you choose to do with that extra day off, or even with that extra hour during the afternoon—these are the things that determine success.     If you ever feel limited by circumstances, then take heart i...

Whether you’retrying to start a business, finish a project, or effect real change in your life, fear of failure can alter many of your decisions. Is it possible that your fear of making a mistake is keeping you from making bigger leaps that could pay off in the long run?   Don’t live life afraid of mistakes   Whether the mistakes you most fear are in the future or in the past, you will find that the greatest benefits come from shunning your fear of them.  Mistakes in the past cannot be changed—but mistakes in the future may or may not happen, depending upon what you do.     Believe it or not, mistakes in th...

Taking control of your life is a choice. A lot of people don’t really stop to think about it, but it’s true. Believe it or not, you choose how you live your life. You might choose to do what is going to lead you to success, or you might choose to waste your time letting naysayers and negative people drag you down—but either way, it is you who makes the choice.   Choose today not to let anything stand in your way I have a challenge for you. Today, look in the mirror and imagine where you want to be tomorrow. Next, think about where you want to be in a week. Where do you want to be in a month, a year, and a decade from now? Where do you want to be when you retire?   If you can think it, then you can achieve it—but you’re never going to make any progress if you don’t choose to stop settli...

According to a recent National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) study, Generation Y (born 1980-1995) — sometimes called Millennials or Generation Next — make up the largest share of homebuyers (31%) in the U.S. They also make up the smallest number of home sellers (12%). Generation X (born 1965-1979) is the second-largest group of homebuyers (30%) and the largest group of home sellers (29%). The NAR report breaks down the large Baby Boom Generation into two groups. Those born 1955-1964 accounted for 16% of home purchases, while those born 1946-1954 were responsible for 14% of home purchases. The Silent Generation (born 1925-1945) bought the remaining 9% of homes. Reasons the Silent Generation purchased homes included caring for aging parents (27%), children moving back home (23%) and the...

It's that time of year, the seasons are changing and with them bring thoughts of the upcoming holidays, family get togethers, and planning for a new year. Those who are on the fence about whether now is the right time to buy don't have to look much farther to find four great reasons to consider buying a home now, instead of waiting. 1. Prices Will Continue to Rise The Home Price Expectation Survey polls a distinguished panel of over 100 economists, investment strategists, and housing market analysts. Their most recent report released recently projects appreciation in home values over the next five years to be between 11.2% (most pessimistic) and 27.8% (most optimistic). The bottom in home prices has come and gone. Home values will continue to appreciate for years. Waiting no longer mak...

What are you truly capable of? When it comes to reminding ourselves of what we can achieve, it is important that we don’t short-change what we have already done. In fact, one of the best ways to remember your past achievements is to keep a list of things that you have done that you are proud of. Whenever you chalk up another success, add it to this list.  Next, whenever you feel down or are tempted to doubt yourself, pull out that list and take a good, long look at it. Look at what you have already achieved, and imagine how much moreyou could do if you really set your mind to it. If you determine not to give up, there is literally no limit to what you can accomplish!  Conquering self-doubt and rediscovering your belief in yourself might not be magic-bullets for success, but they are ess...

One of the things that gives me most peace is having a clean and simple home. When I wake up in the morning and walk downstairs into a kitchen and living room that have been decluttered, that have a minimalist look, and have no junk lying around, there is a calm and joy that enters my heart. When, on the other hand, I walk out into a living room cluttered with toys and magazines all over the place, it's chaos and my mind is frenetic. And trust me, with my 2-year-old who thinks all of her toys need to be laid out in order for her to play with them, this happens a lot. Let me first state the obvious: any life that includes children is going to add clutter to your home, to at least some degree. You’ll never get a completely minimalist lifestyle with kids, and I’ve learned to accept that...

#1 – Failure is just another step toward successDon’t take failure too seriously. Instead, learn from it and adapt to increase your odds of succeeding next time.#2 – Be thankful for the experienceGetting knocked down earns you valuable experience that you can use to make yourself better at what you do. This experience is actually worth more than gold, because it teaches you what does and doesn’t work. Don’t look at failure in a negative light. Instead, look at it as a learning experience.#3 – The fact that you care enough about your own success to read motivational articles says that your odds of winning are better than your odds of losingIf you care enough about your destiny to motivate yourself with some extracurricular media, then there is a good chance that your head is on the righ...

Wow, devastating appliance and even fatal fires all over Westchester County, including Yonkers, NY 10705         Our local family owned company helps restore these damages and it can be heartbreaking for our clients and my great crews.  Recently, we heard about a fire in the town where our office is located -- a whole family perished in the fire.     Now, puffbacks are a problem and they can be as damaging as some fires to a home or business.  If you have a boiler and radiator system for heating, it has been a long, cold winter.  They have built up a lot of soot that could "backfire" and send soot out of the radiators and all over walls, ceilings and furniture.  Get help, as this soot is particulate and can cause breathing problems.     We hope that you changed the batteries or tested e...

My mother, Gwen Hall with George Harrison "I look at you...still my guitar gently weeps" Happy mother's day to all the mom's out there. I lost my mother in 1995. She died long before blogging was invented but I suspect she's pleased that I have a blog and that I write about localism. Besides being a wife, mother and grandmother, my mom was a longtime figure in local journalism. She was a reporter, columnist and editor. In the 1970's she became one of the first woman city editors of a daily newspaper, The Yonkers Herald Statesman. My mother was known for her award winning columns featuring the city and county's politics, consumer affairs, business and lifestyles. There was some dangerous investigative journalism too. I remember having to drive her to the office when she was working on s...

April 2, was Autism awareness day.  Disorders in the Autism spectrum are on the rise.  As a former researcher, Autism and its spectrum of disorders has always held something of a special place in my mind and heart.  Although progress is being made, like most complex disorders with a wide spectrum  of symptoms, there are probably multiple causes, some of it genetic, some of it environmental all at play.    As much as we need awareness, we need research dollars.   Research  like this can not be left to the private sector as the the road will lead down a dozen blind alleys.  As is the case with most complex disorders, there is probably no one "cause".  Let us turn our attention to the reckless budget cutting that is going on in Washington and realize that this is making the pathway that mu...

For those who don't yet have insurance for ALL of your belongings in your rented home / apartment in Yonkers, NY: EVERYONE, yes that's us, should have "contents insurance" if we rent a home or apartment.  This is especially true for those who live in a multi-family building, or rent a coop or condo.  Any of your neighbors might have or cause a fire or water damage situation that can ruin your belongings.  Our great friends at Allstate Insurance on McLean Avenue in Yonkers, NY can tell you more at:  914-237-3800.     With historic storms like Hurricane Sandy and Winter Storm “Nemo,” taking aim at our Westchester County towns, it’s time to get covered.  For years, I paid very little in “contents insurance” for all of my clothes, furniture, SHOES (I’m a girl), chatchkes and ALL that I owne...
