  As the weather warms up in our area, there are various tasks ahead of us.  So is your garden ready?  You can't go digging in the garden as yet.  It is too wet and soggy.  If you dare do some digging now, the ground will become compacted.  Better hold off for a few more weeks.  The only thing I do now is to scatter some Epsom salt into the garden beds.  Why Epsom salt ?  If you read the label on the box, it says Magnesium Sulfate.  Magnesium Sulfate is a trace element that plants need to encourage new growth, promote greener leaf and bloom better.  Once the ground is workable, check the pH of your soil.  Gather 1 cup of soil from 4 different areas in your garden.  Put them in separate sandwich bags, label them where you get them and take them to Cornell Cooperative Extension Service an... 03/15/2009

  School Districts on the North Shore of Long Island are a bit confusing for some buyers.  There are areas where school districts overlap.  For instance, in Muttontown, some areas are in Jericho schools, some are in Syosset schools and some are in Oyster Bay-East Norwich schools.  Likewise in Brookville, kids go to different school districts - Jericho or Locust Valley.  Upper Brookville kids go to school either in Oyster Bay-East Norwich or Locust Valley school system.  These incorporated villages are so close to each other that sometimes it gets too complicated.  In Oyster Bay Cove, on some streets close to the water, you can have a choice of sending your kids to either Oyster Bay-East Norwich, or Syosset.  Not only are the school districts overlap, numbering is also a bit confusing be... 03/07/2009

BROOKVILLE AND UPPER BROOKVILLE LUXURY HOME SALES DOWN FROM LAST YEAR Luxury home sales in Brookville and Upper Brookville are slightly off from last year's number.  For the first 7 months of the year, there are only 7 homes sold in Brookville compared to 14 last year.  The market in Upper Brookville fared better percentage wise.  In Upper Brookville, there were 5 homes sold last year and there were 4 homes sold this year.   That's a decrease of 20% whereas in Brookville, the decrease was 50%.  Prices are also much lower this year.  Last year, Farm Ranches in Brookville were selling for $1,600,000 whereas this year, they only went for $1,500,000.  Colonials last year were selling in the price ranges of $2,400,000 to $3,400,000, whereas this year two Colonials sold for $1,825,000 and $1,... 08/07/2008

Can you grow roses without the harsh chemical?  Yes, you can.  I attended a lecture series at the New York Botanical Garden last Friday and Saturday with focus on sustainable rose garden.  It is a pioneering endeavor sponsored by the Manhattan Rose Society and the New York Metro Rose Council.  The highlight of the event is the Great Rosarian Award given to a person who has made a tremendous contribution to the world of roses.  This year the recipient of the award is William J.
