 This photo of the Richardson Mountains was taken several years ago during a September trip on the Dempster Highway, the road that takes you as far north as you can drive in North America. The Dempster runs from Dawson City in the Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. It is a 457 mile long gravel road through gorgeous remote wilderness, with basically nothing on it except a gas station/motel/restaurant about halfway up at Eagle Plains, right at the Arctic Circle. By next year, it will extend another 121 miles to Tuktoyaktuk, on the Beaufort Sea.  The  landscape is arctic tundra, and is well north of the tree line. The red color in the foliage is primarily Fireweed. 10/23/2015

We generally know our dogs from their behavior as it has adapted to our environment. But when they get into a situation where their instincts take over, they show us a side we may seldom see in our daily lives.   A dozen years ago, my third Lab, Guido, and I made a two-week trip in northern Canada to above the Arctic circle, camping and hiking as the mood took us. He was very much in his element, using his amazing nose to read the story of the places we visited, and sharing his more interesting finds with me. He was beautiful to watch as he took point on our forays, with his tail always pointing at the sky. Sometimes a photo just takes your breath away and, for me, this is one of those photos.  My niece (who I promote shamelessly in this blog) works for Parks Canada in the North West Territories.  She is also a fabulous photographer who will take hours to get the right photo with the right light at the right time of day.  I believe this is one of her best.  It was taken in Fort Simpson (and if you look on the map you will see that this is really up north).  She used a Nikon D200.  Her partner/fiance stood beside her with a strong flashlight on the airplane.  When I asked if she had photo fixed this in any way, she said she had just reduced the darkness of the photo so that the green of the northern lights would pop.  I hope you are as amazed with her skills as I am. 10/17/2011

Don't you love it when you are right.  Especially when it it to your client's benefit. I recently listed a home for a couple that had remodeled it.  The husband was a general contractor and licensed plumber and elctrician so I should not have been suprised to see the fantastic job they had done.  The home was in a small mill town located in my area and home prices are low to begin with.  Not much over $100k.  The area has seen some hard times but recently has become one of those areas where people are looking to buy because they know they can buy so cheap and then renovate and have a great home for not much money.  Many of these homes have never been updated and were originally built in the 1930's when textiles were king.  They usually sell around $80k. As Realtors we often see the partners programs and receive information on the "Official" whatever for The NAR.  I am here to tell you , in my experience, one is definitely lacking! And the offender is, PITNEY BOWES!  I have a mail station from Pitney Bowes, you know, supposed to make postage cheaper and quicker.  It has been a six month nightmare.  The machine never works right, the billing is confusing at best, calling customer service takes forever, and it is actually expensive.  I pay $21.35 just to have this little machine in my office.  Now how is that cheaper than stopping by the post office which is right beside the bank where I make deposits everyday? Of course we all love closings because that means we get paid.  Why is it that I also hate them so much?  Probably because there are so many people invilved the chance for human error is great and usually occurs.  One would think with all the check lists and educated people revewing and rereviewing these files that errors would be kept to a minimum.  Oh how I wish. I guess you have figured out by now I have just finished one of those nightmare closings.  It seemed nothing went right.  I guess I should be proud that none of it was my fault and my clients thought I was wonderful for keeping it all together but I feel like I just got run over.  Hey, but I got paid. Well, actually 102% financing is available through a home-loan program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).  An excellent article in the Personal Journal section of today's Wall Street Journal describes the program in detail. USDA financing is not just for buying farm property.  In Southeastern North Carolina, homes throughout the coastal counties may be purchased with USDA financing of 102% of the appraised value!  In the Wilmington area, all of Brunswick and Pender counties as well as parts of New Hanover county qualify.  In the Wilmington area, homebuyers with household incomes of less than approximately $70,000/year (effective January 1, 2009) may qualify for the USDA program.  Note that the gross incomes of all household members 18 and older are included in the inc... 12/16/2008

I read an article in today's issue of the Charlotte Observer that I felt compelled to share with everyone that didn't have the opportunity to read it themselves.  It was about  the N.C. Heroes' Fund and how the goal of this organization is to raise $500K for former or current members of the military who are experiencing hardship due to their generous service.  These are hardships of many kinds, but nonetheless hardships.  During this time of the year people are always trying to think of ways to help out those that are less fortunate and I cannot think of many better ways to spread holiday cheer than to give back to those who have sacrificed for their country.  North Carolina's military soldiers and their families will be extremely grateful for your contributions.  If you would like more... 12/09/2007

                                                                                                   Especially at this time of year ,when we are gathering together to talk with our neighbors beneath the brilliant tresses of maple trees, perhaps discussing the harvest, perhaps a season of plenty,  native traditions appear like colorful threads in the tapestry of contemporary life. Yes...this year in the valley near our home in Guaxule (the Cherokee name for Asheville, North Carolina) a black bear raised three cubs, the wild turkey family, male, female and seven chicks roamed undisturbed, rabbits scooted here and there while hawks kept an attentive eye.
