It might only be Monday, but it’s never too early to start planning for the weekend at the Jersey Shore! June 9th (next Saturday) it’s the 2nd Annual Privateers and Pirates Festival at the Tuckerton Seaport!  At 10am you can meet and greet the Valhalla Pirates (don’t forget your camera), then there’s a workshop called ‘Pirate Tools of the Bloody Trade’.  Stick around for ‘The Pirate’s Tall Tale of the Flyin’ Dutchman’, that ship doomed to sail the oceans forever never making port. The Tuckerton Seaport is a working maritime village and is located along the Tuckerton Creek (or Crik as we say).  It’s the best place to learn about the Jersey Shore’s unique maritime heritage and the interaction between its culture and nature on the Barnegat Bay. There are recreated and historic buildings,...

While the summer might officially be over at the Jersey Shore, there are still plenty of reasons to get outside.  This weekend Tuckerton hosts the 29th Annual Ocean County Decoy and Gunning  Show at the Tuckerton Seaport and  across Route 9 at Tip Seaman Park.  This two day event celebrates the culture of the Barnegat Bay. New to this two day event is the  Delmarva Dock Dog competition.  DOCKDOGS® is a national organization which sponsors competitions for handlers and there dogs.  The first is 'Big Air', described as a long jump for dogs (off a dock!).  Then there's the 'Vertical Jump', a high jump if you will.  And finally there's a 'Speed Retrieve' which times the dogs retrieving an object from the water.  Here's a schedule of the DockDogs competition at Tip Seaman Park September 24 &...

The other month I got a little excited about the sales results for September. I was not sure how exactly to interpret the raw data. Looking for a silver lining I indicated that indeed we may very well have hit bottom and on our way to a rebound. I was wrong. It was just a strike of lighting - real estate still suxs. Compare the numbers above to the same period last year and see if you agree with the Press of Atlantic City, which claims the price of homes is on the raise. Remember, numbers don't lie, but liars use numbers. So, I don't know how they came up with the news article or who in the National Association of REALTORS would release such mis-information to the public. I admit I was wrong on my last month optimistic view of the sales trend. Will they come forward and admit no one rea...

Get a first hand view of Jersey Shore history, as the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve and Tuckerton Seaport host a Lunch n' Learn Program this Wednesday about the shark attacks of 1916.  Those attacks changed our perception of sharks and even inspired a little movie you may have heard of...JAWS. Everyone, it seems, has seen the 1975 film JAWS.  The story is said to take place in a quaint New England town called Amity Island. Replace the name Amity Island with the Jersey Shore, and the events of the movie and book are mirrored in the historical records of the Jersey Shore. In just 12 days, July 1 through July 12, 1916, a shark or sharks killed four people and mauled 7 others along the Jersey Shore. People were in a panic because just a year earlier, the New York Tim...
