Near the center of downtown Scotch Plains is a World War I cannon that was given to the town after WWII.  The gift was a thank you for residents purchasing a minimum of $20,000 in War Bonds.  The resident's of Scotch Plains generously gave more than $200,000 in support of the war effort.    So as the picture shows the cannon sits in it's glory, but something is missing.   The wheels.   Because the cannon had been sitting for so long, the wooden wheels were heavily damaged.  The wheels have been shipped to an Amish wheel worker in Pennsylvania to do the restoration work.   A couple of weeks ago, I drove past the cannon, and behold!  The new wheels are on it!  It really looks grand!!! Don't you think?

On a recent Saturday evening we went out to try the new Irish pub in Scotch Plains, Darby Road.   As soon as you walk in the place screams Irish Pub.  The bar has several televisions all showing some type of sporting event.  One entire wall is decorated by the scarves of various soccer teams.  We were quickly seated and our waitress took our drink order.  After our drinks arrived we ordered.  The menu is comprised of "standard" pub fare with a few standouts.  We started with the Onion Soup Dumplings appetizer.  Less than ten minutes later the dumplings arrived at our table.  Imagine carmelized onions in a wonton wrapper that is simmered in onion soup.  The dumplings are put on a plate and provolone cheese is baked on top of them.  Delicious! In a rarity for us, we both ordered the same ...

Scotch Plains, NJ, is a lovely town located in southwestern Union County and is home to approximately 23,500 people.    Scotch Plains has seen a very robust summer real estate market with nearly 100 homes sold this summer. The market has slowed down a bit in September with only 15 homes sold, however. Active listings in Scotch Plains have dropped a bit, resulting in a lowering of the absorption rate. A comparison between the sold listings and the active listings can be used to calculate the absorption rate. The absorption rate is the data upon which real estate professionals identify a market as a "buyer's market" or a "seller's market." If the absorption rate is above 6 months, there are more homes than there are buyers and the market is said to be a buyer's market. If the absor...
