The University of Princeton Chapel is the third largest college chapel in the world and the University's largest indoor facility.   The Chapel is non-secretarian and holds weekly denominational and nondenominational services.   Along with the religious use it also hosts non-religious ceremonies including Opening Exercises and services for commencement.    The chapel seats approximately 2000 and is 270 foot long.   The oak pews are wood from Civil war times.  The stained glass collection is the most valuable in the western hemisphere and when renovated in 2002, was sent to France for cleaning and restoration.   The architecture through out the campus of Princeton University is mostly Gothic.  In keeping with the gothic architecture style, which Princeton is famous, the chief architect wa...

Welcome Students is popping up all around Princeton lately.  The Class of 2012 is coming to campus.  Registration day is August 30th, but a lot of students and families are seen touring the 500-acre Princeton University Campus.   Princeton is rich in history with traditions and lore and has been hailed by generations of Princetonians as "the best old place of all".   Princeton was the very first college to call her campus a "campus".   On a beautiful, crisp summer day I decided to take a stroll thru the University grounds and take in the beauty of the Princeton University Campus

Located in Princeton Borough between Bayard Lane and Chambers Street (behind our NATIONS Real Estate office) is Bank Street.  I first discovered Bank Street when looking for a parking space and thought it was an alley.  Much to my delight, I discovered a variety of Victorian Homes and un-metered parking spaces with a two hour time limit.   Bank Street is designated  "Historic District  Preservation" by the Princeton Borough Historic Preservation Office.   The homes on Bank Street were constructed in the late 19th century as "modest residences".  They are two story buildings, eleven total on the street.  The homes are single and twins, featuring bay windows and wood sitting porches decorated with spindle valances.  The exterior accents are also scalloped, diamond and fish scale.  There a...

Why Some Princeton Houses Sell Quickly There are some homes in Princeton that continue to sell well in any market. This article looks at what makes these Princeton homes special. For some Princeton real estate sellers it has been a challenging market.  In the Princeton township there were 190 houses listed in the first six months of 2008, and only  84 sold during the same period. In 2007, this ratio was 239 houses listed to 101 houses sold. In 2005 it was 247 listed and 123 sold. What is interesting is there are houses that continue to sell quickly in any market  and some are selling over asking price. "Could my house sell quickly in this market?" is a question many sellers in Princeton ask me in trying to understand what makes a difference between a house that sells and the one languis...

In today's real estate market, you need to not only know what you are doing, but be able to be very creative and to think outside the box. So, as a seller or a realtor, how do you market a home?  How about a home that is in a college town? Yesterday, I wrote this post, "Kiddie Condo" FHA loans aka Non-Occupant Co-Borrower Loans - What are they? Because of the mortgage meltdown that started taking place about 2 years ago, there aren't as many mortgage programs available. The media hasn't helped as much, with spreading negative news also. But what about getting back to the basics?  What about certain programs that can be used in some markets that aren't talked about much. With recent news that HUD might not allow down payment assistance programs, which won't be known until August 15th, t...

Where is "Home"?   Everyone always wants to know where is "home" or "where are you from?" We recently spent 8 months "wintering" in South West Florida in Naples on the Gulf of Mexico.  It is truly a beautiful area, warm blue green water and sunsets over the Gulf.   While in SW Florida, I studied for my Florida Brokers and also familiarized myself with all of the different communities and areas.  As beautiful as Naples is, I could not make it my permanent "home".  It is too far from the rest of my life, my family, especially my two sons.  I am originally from Baltimore but have lived over half of my life in New Jersey.  Whenever I say I am going home for Thanksgiving or whatever other holiday the "home" means Baltimore.  My mother still lives in my childhood home there. When I first move...

On a cool summer day we set out to visit Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ, hoping to catch a glimpse of the U.S. Olympic Rowers.   Lake Carnegie is located just off of Route 27 in Princeton, the home of U.S. Olympic Rowing Team.  The national squad trains on Lake Carnegie year round. In the early 1900's a Princeton alumni was painting the portrate of Andrew Carnegie, a noted businessman and philanthropist and persuaded him to donate money for the lake for use of the Tigers Princeton rowing team.  It is a man made lake formed from a dam of the Millstone River. This particulair early afternoon found the lake quiet except for a single goose floating on the water and a lone woman kayaking and draging her fishing line behind her. It is a beautiful spot to sit and picnic, fish, or canoe and ho...

Princeton is a great college town, always alive with action.   Princeton University is a beautiful campus with a wide diversity of students and educators.   U.S. today named Princeton University number one of America's best colleges.   The tuition and fees range around $33,000 per year with room and board running an additional $10,980.   The student body has approximately 4,923 undergraduate students.  There is no religious affiliation.   The University was founded in 1746 and was chartered as the College of New Jersey, the name it was known for 150 years.  It was located in Elizabeth for one year and then Newark for 9 years.   In 1756 it was moved to Princeton and housed in Nassau Hall.  Nassau Hall contained the whole college for nearly half a century.   1896 the college obtained univ...
