  Gordons Corner Fire Company Open House   The Gordons Corner Fire Company of Manalapan Township will hold its annual open house Oct. 9 from noon to 4 p.m. in honor of National Fire Safety Week.   MANALAPAN LEAF RECYCLING   All leaves must be placed in biodegradable compost bags. These bags can be purchased at the Public Works Department on Mondays – Fridays from  9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The bags are sold in bundles of 5 for a cost of $2.00.  You can also purchase these bags from local retailers. NO leaves will be collected that are not in these biodegradable bags. Bagged leaves containing twigs, grass, brush, weeds or other debris will not be collected. The Spring Leaf collection will take place during the weeks of April 18 and May 2. Please place bagged leaves at the curb, not in the street, on the first day of each scheduled collection to insure you will not miss any of the collections. In an effort to increase recycling in the township, the Manalapan Environmental Commission has produced a television program for the local cable channel that is intended to teach Manalapan residents about what they can recycle curbside and to show them how easy it is to recycle. According to a press release from the township, Manalapan could reap significant savings on the cost of managing its trash if residents increase their recycling rates because the town pays by weight to dump its trash at the county landfill and on the whole residents are throwing out many recyclable items. At the beginning of 2010, Manalapan converted its recycling program to single-stream recycling which means that residents can now place all of their recyclables in one container for curbside pickup.   The Manalapan Police Department in partnership  with the Manalapan Community Alliance will host an Operation Take Back New Jersey local collection site as part of the Operation Take Back New Jersey medicine disposal day. The event will take place in the lobby adjacent to the entrance to the police department at the Manalapan municipal complex, 120 Route 522, at the corner of Taylors Mills Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. September 25. According to the Manalapan Township Committee, as reported in last week's News Transcript, Manalapan’s total tax rate (all taxing entities accounted for) in 2010 will be $2.03 per $100 of assessed valuation.Simply put, divide your NEW assessed value by 100 (on the green card you received in January) and multiply by $2.03 to receive a pretty close indication of your proposed taxes. For example, if your assessed value is 425,000, you multiply 4250 by 2.03 and find your taxes for 2010 would be... $8,627.50. Manalapan Day was a blast right from the start!! (See my original post about the event:  Manalapan Under the Stars). The weather threatened but in the end the sun won!!  It might have been a little warm at times, but we'll take it as opposed to the wash-out the event was last year!!!         For myself, Gail and the rest of the Weichert Team, the fun started long before the official event!  Overcoming the hostile wind and setting up our tent was challenging!!  We heaved and we ho'd and we finally got it up and secured!  It seemed each one of us were able to contribute something to get the job done.  Yeah Team!! Although I do not live anywhere near the oil rig that exploded off Louisiana, and Mississippi (and other states near there), I was watching this unfold on television.  It is a tragedy of huge proportions.  First there was the death of the workers on that rig.  And, now the oil is leaking out of control.  I get the feeling that BP Petroleum and our government really does not know how to fix this problem.  The birds are already showing up covered in oil.  The environment is totally at risk there and so are many people's livelihoods.  There may also be an impact on shipping in that area.  I am hearing that in my neck of the woods, restaurants are expecting shortages of certain fish products.  The list goes on and on.  Here in NJ, they were recently talking about putting up oil rigs off the... 04/30/2010
