Waxhaw is roughly 20 minutes south of Charlotte and three miles from the South Carolina state line.Waxhaw is one of Union County's oldest cities, dating back to the 1700s, and named after the Waxhaws (formerly known as the Wysacky), an Indian tribe who historically inhabited the area. Waxhaw took its rightful place as Union County's third oldest town when it was founded in 1889.Waxhaw, with a population of about 17,147 people, has managed to keep its small-town character while achieving quality growth.
