Looking for new place to go for a gourmet dinner.  Try Wolcott's in Southern Pines NC.  The restaurant is not exactly brand new - it has been around for well over a year now.  It is located on Pennsylvania Avenue right between Broad Street and Bennett Street and across the street from The Pilot Newspaper Office.  It is a small place that packs a big punch.  All of the food is great and they have a good wine selection.  Wolcott's is convenient to Pinehurst as well, and last night, there were a number of people eating dinner who are associated in some way with the US Amateur Golf Tournament which is being held at the Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst NC this week.  Wolcott's is just in the phase of being discovered, and I highly recommend that you try it if you have not done so already....

The Fields is a wonderful equestrian community located about 15 minutes from Pinehurst NC and Southern Pine NC in the rolling hills near Cameron, NC.  The development is gated and is divided into 3 different phases.  Phase 1 is virtually sold out.  Phase 2 is about 70% sold out, and Phase 3 is under development and will be completed sometime in 2009.  The Fields has a community Dressage Ring, a Jumping Ring, a 25 acre field for ground work, AND over 15 miles of trails for riding or walking.  There have been some fabulous homes built at the Fields, and there are a few choice lots remaining.  Lots at the Fields range from 10 - 20 acres, with most being closer to 10 acres.  There are wooded tracts available as well as fully cleared lots.  It is great place for horses and horse lovers becau...

Southern Pines Country Club in Southern Pines NC is a Donald Ross Course that is a great place to play golf.  It's open to the public so anyone can have the experience of playing a Ross course that has been there for over 100 years.  The course is kind of short, but it has typical Ross greens that can be very difficult even when you hit a good shot to get on the green.  The course is always in decent shape despite the fact that the maintenance budget is a fraction of many other area courses.  The rates are very fair as well.  In the Summer, the fees can be as low as $70 inlcuding cart.  In the Spring and Fall, rates get up to about $100 on ther weekends.  My favorite holes are the middle 12 holes.  That doesn't mean the other 6 are not great.  The course is at edge of an established nie...

Mid Pines Golf & Country Club - Southern Pines, NC Mid Pines is a Donald Ross golf course that is part of the Pine Needles/Mid Pines Resort.  The course is open to the public year round.  It is located in Southern Pines, just 5 miles from Pinehurst and right across the road from its more famous sibling Pine Needles.  The Mid Pines course reminds you a lot of Augusta National.  Obviously, it is not as long or quite as scenic, but the topography, the pine trees and the azaleas sure do make you miss those rare visits to the Masters.  The course is challenging, but it is the most accessible of the world class Donald Ross courses in the area that is meticulously maintained.  Rates, including cart, range from about $130 in the off season to $180 in high season, so this is definitely not an ev...

Looking for a great way to spend a Friday night in the Sandhills?  Make reservations at May Street Market and get ready for the time of your lives.  The evening includes dinner from a modest menu and great live music from one of the three fabulous bands that rotate through the calendar.  Check out the details here:http://maystmarket.com/friday.html Your reservation gives you the table for the evening.  Music gets strated around 7pm and usually the band plays 'till 10:30, maybe 11.  It leans heavily to great covers of 60's and 70's classic rock stuff, with a generous helping of country, and a handful of original numbers, at least with my favorite band of the bunch, Joyner Young and Marie.  Check out their website http://www.joyneryoung.com and make your reservations for tomorrow night.  ...

Many of my buyers are avid golfers who were first drawn to the Pinehurst area because of Pinehurst's history and tremendous reputation.  There's no doubt there are many attractive options for homes inside the city limits of Pinehurst that offer residents the ability to obtain a much valued Pinehurst Country Club membership.   However, my buyer clients seeking a golf community are almost always pleasantly surprised when we tour home options in the Mid South Club, located just a couple miles east of the Pinehurst traffic circle off of Midland Road/Hwy. 2 east.  Mid South is a gated community with two access points.  Lots are slightly larger than many golf community lots inside Pinehurst and many homes are situated on golf front lots or in view of the Arnold Palmer Mid South course.   Thei...

Yesterday, I decided to go out and get in a round of golf at nearby Hyland Hills.  Hyland Hills is an 18 hole course in Southern Pines, NC - one of over 40 courses within about 10 minutes of Pinehurst. There are golf front homes and condos right on the course. I showed up at about 4 thinking I would play 9 holes to get back in time to catch live coverage of the US Open.  In the Pro Shop, they told me the "after 1 pm rate" was only $29 for 18 holes (cart fee included).  GREAT deal for a decent course in the heart of North Carolina Golf Country.  In any event, the course plays 6,300 yds from the Men's tees (rating of 69.1) and 6,900 from the back tees (71.9).  Playing from the back really isn't that long because a lot of the tee shots are downhill. It's been dry here and the greens were r...

The Sandhills Youth Soccer League, based in Southern Pines NC, is an extraordinary organization with the obvious mission to organize and promote youth soccer in Southern Pines, Pinehurst and the surrounding area for children from ages 4 -18.  League play is conducted in three different competition levels based on skill and commitment - Recreation, Challenge and Classic.  In addition to league play, SYSL also organizes tournaments and camps for players as well as coaches and referees.  For information about registering your young players or about serving as a referee or coach, contact the Leauge Office at 910-693-0662 or gosysl.com.  The SYSL is the kind of league that you'd ordinarily find in a much larger area, and it is run by folks with an incredible amount of soccer experience.  Mor...

The Sunrise Theater, it's history and restoration say a lot about Southern Pines and what a wonderful place it is to live.  There was a time when the historic theater was down and out.  Then in the late 1990's, a group of local citizens decided to rally community support to restore the Sunrise to its original glory - and improve on it.  Locals and newcomers alike responded by making contributions on time and money to bring the theater back to life - from a new roof to new seating to a new concession area.  The vision was realized. Today, the Sunrise Theater in downtown Southern Pines shows independent films and foreign films.  The stage also plays host to some wonderful concerts and plays.  For example, the Kingston Trio had a concert at the Sunrise just a few weeks ago.  The Sunrise is...

Downtown Southern Pines is a vibrant walking community full of great restaurants, shops, a theater and parks.  With today's high gas prices, living in beautiful downtown Southern Pines can actually save you the time and expense of driving your car.  Walk to a restaurant, to see a movie or take your children to the park to play tennis, shoot a few baskets or play at the playground.  Most major religious denominations have churches downtown; and Amtrak operates train service from the historic train station downtown with service north to New York and South to Florida.  Houses and condos within walking distance of town start in the mid $100,000's and end up in the $300,000's - a great value when you think about all the benefits of living in town.  Housing options include historic homes buil...

Southern Pines, NC proved once again today what a great place it is to raise a family.  The town hosted Springfest 2008, and streets lined with vendors, activities, great food, charitable organizations and much more. It was a beautiful day in one of the best small towns in the U.S.  McDevitt Sotheby's participated by having several dedicated volunteers and the Moore County Humane Society Booth.  At least 4 dogs were adopted today - and children of all ages enjoyed playing with puppies and picking out just the right pet to rescue.  It was great to see children with their friends, parents and grandparents enjoying games, rides, live music - not to mention corn dogs and fresh squeezed lemonade.  The vendors brought their arts and crafts and other interesting goods to make for a great day o...

If you had to describe the ideal place to raise happy, healthy childern in a safe environment, Southern Pines and Pinehurst would come pretty close.  In addition to great schools, the area offers tons of wholesome activities for kids of all ages.  It's small enough that children can't be anonymous because there's a whole community watching over them in a sense.  At the same time, the area has grown to the point that children can stay active and engaged.  Plus, families from all over are choosing to live in Southern Pines, Pinehurst or one of the surrounding villages, so there are plenty of children in the area!  There is too much to mention in such a short space, so if you have questions, just give us a call at 800-788-8814, or visit us on the web at http://www.mcdevitttownandcountry.com
