One of the first things a lot of our clients ask about when they buy a vacation home here is “where do I find one of those faces for my trees”.  While some may find them a bit creepy, most think they are adorable.  Be cautious though, they are like potato chips -- you can’t have just one! While hiking with our friends Tish and Jon in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest this past weekend, we came upon a Tree Face provided to us by Mother Nature and Father Time.   Actually, after studying the picture a bit, we found more than one!!!    How many can YOU find? Thanks to the generosity of a wonderful client Bill and I were able to take a getaway weekend to Lake Santeetlah with some close friends this weekend. After a relaxing morning enjoying the views, (I’ll share more later about “Heaven’s Hideaway” the vacation home where we stayed), Saturday we decided to head over to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest for some hiking.  Only about a 20 minute drive from the “cabin” it’s a must see for anyone visiting the area. A peaceful segue from the pressures of life, accessing the park you wind through the mountains and along a noisy creek before arriving at the parking area.  Grab your camera and enjoy this beautiful old-growth forest with over 100 species of trees, many over 400 years old.   Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest was named for the American Writer a...

Come on out to the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 11:00-4:00, for the Stecoah Ramp Festival. They’ll be hosting a full-on festival for the 50th anniversary of celebrating ramps in Graham County. Ramps add a wonderful and uniquely pungent flavor to soups, egg dishes, casseroles, rice dishes and potato dishes.  One of our favorite ways to have them is baked in cornbread muffins! Mountain folks have been gathering and enjoying ramps for generations, but ramps are also now gracing the chef tables of fine restaurants around the country.  Ramps are available for a very limited time each year so take advantage of this opportunity to celebrate this Appalachian spring delicacy.Craft vendors will cover the Stecoah grounds, and from 1:00-3:00 visitors will hav...

My wife and I spent a few days at a bed and breakfast celebrating our 13th anniversary. We got a place up in the mountains of western North Carolina located on the shores of Lake Santeetlah in Graham county.  It was about a three hour drive from Atlanta. What a beautiful area. We crossed the North Carolina border around dinner time on Sunday night and started to look for a decent restaurant to eat dinner at.  We were really surprised at the lack of anything other than fast food.  We finally passed a few restaurants in Andrews but they were closed on Sundays. What we found out from our host at the bed and breakfast is that Graham county is a completely dry county.  No alcohol can be sold there.  They do have a small loophole for a few lodges to sell alcohol in their restaurants.  He said t...
