We take time to honor and observe Flag Day here in the Murphy, NC mountains. You’ll see flags proudly displayed throughout the year here in our small communities and businesses, but in June and July Old Glory waves freely! Remembering how our great country started and the sacrifices so many have made to keep us all safe and free.   Have you ever wondered how Flag Day got started... On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes – one for each state. Although it is not certain, this flag may have been made by the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy.  The number of stars increased as...

Hummingbird Brings Back Tobacco     In the beginning of the world, when people and animals were all the same, there was only one tobacco plant, to which they all came for their tobacco until the Dagul'ku geese stole it and carried it far away to the south. The people were suffering without it, and there was one old woman who grew so thin and weak that everybody said she would soon die unless she could get tobacco to keep her alive.     Different animals offered to go for it, one after another, the larger ones first and then the smaller ones, but the Dugul'ku saw and killed every one before he could get to the plant. After the others the little Mole tried to reach it by going under the ground, but the Dagul'ku saw his track and killed him as he came out.     At last the Hummingbird offer...

Who doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the NC and GA mountains? Who doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the mountains? Sure we had a small garden on our city lot when we lived in South Florida - it was a great space for our son to play outside and pick veggies right out of the garden and help us dig in the dirt. But one thing we really dreamed of while planning our move to the Murphy NC mountains was to have a big garden and plant lots of fruit trees.   When we first moved here to Cherokee County NC in 1997 we had lots of apple trees and grapes already on the property. We also found out about the local Cooperative Extension in downtown  Murphy NC  for information on pressure and water bath canning, different plant varieties, soil and pest control and we even bought some blueb...

Just For One Day - Celebrate Earth Day Monday, April 22, 2013 we celebrate the 43rd Anniversary of Earth Day! Looking for some small way to celebrate the day? The following statistics are eye-opening, to say the least, how just the little daily changes we make can impact our world.  If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would save: ● 100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months ● 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year ● 70 million gallons of gas--enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to spare ● 3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delaware ● 33 tons of antibiotics If everyone went vegetari...

When is Dogwood Winter in Murphy, NC?   Old-timers in the Appalachians know there are several named "winters" following the officially arrival of spring and Dogwood Winter and Blackberry Winter are perhaps the best known.   It’s a term used by Southerners to describe a period of cold weather that coincides with the blooming of the local dogwoods and blackberries, usually occurring in the mid April to May months. The dogwoods are all bloomed out and the blackberries are soon to follow.   With the possibility of frost happening during Dogwood and Blackberry winters, many Southerners here in Murphy, NC wait until after these winters have passed to plant tender vegetables and annuals. The Native Americans also watched for the dogwood blooms as the sign to begin planting corn and other crops...

Everyone in Murphy NC is a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! Saint Patrick's Day is in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland, who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isles, as Ireland is known, and the Irish people in the 400's AD. It is truly a day of celebrating Irish history, ancestry, traditions and customs. And as the saying goes everyone is a little Irish on Saint Patrick's Day.Erin Go Braugh is perhaps the most common Irish term you will hear. It means "Ireland Forever"  Did You Know? Over 34 million Americans are of Irish descent. That's almost nine times the population of Ireland!   Share an Irish Toast to celebrate!   "May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go."   "Bless your little Irish heart and every other Irish part." ...
