Honoring Presidents Day with some early Presidential Firsts   Once in the White House, each President made his mark in different ways. In fact, before Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, came to office, the White House wasn't even called the White House! People called the building the President's Palace, President's House, and the Executive Mansion. Roosevelt officially named it the White House in 1901.   Theodore Roosevelt wasn't the only President to invent a new expression. Martin Van Buren, the eighth President, is sometimes credited with creating the word "OK." Van Buren was from Kinderhook, New York. During his campaign, Old Kinderhook (O.K.) clubs formed to support the President. Later, "OK" or "okay," came to mean "all right." Bet you never knew that was where that word came...

Can you Do a Grouch a Favor on February 16thin the Murphy NC and north GA mountains?   Can you Do a Grouch a Favor on February 16th as we celebrate this fun day? It’s something we all can do and make our town and the world a better place.   Everyone of us has been a grouch at one time or another... okay, some more than others. Some people are seemingly grouches all of the time.  It's in their nature. Others are occasional grouches, influenced by events in their lives, lack of sleep, the weather, maybe they didn't get to the mountains this year for vacation, etc.  A few people are good at disguising their grouchy mood, but we all still need cheering up.   So today, can you look around for someone who is in a grouchy mood? Then, do him or her a favor that will cheer up their day. There's...

Just how cold is it in Murphy, NC today? Well, its been really cold all over the country, but today it was 0.0 degrees when we woke up in the Murphy, NC mountains. Thank goodness the sky is clear blue and the sun is shining bright! By lunchtime we're up to 24 degrees now. Doesn't homemade soup sound good right about now? We moved here in 1997 from South Florida where the weather was always hot or hotter. Tops on our list why to move to Murphy, NC was a lifestyle change from the big city and to be able to enjoy the change of seasons too. It was all worth it! We love throwing on the layers and still getting out and about - not to mention, if we didn't have this cold we wouldn't be enjoying the colorful Spring right around the corner. No matter where you live, we hope you're enjoying your ...

Who says you need to wait to list your home?Don’t Wait Until Spring to List Your Home! Yes, Spring is a crucial time of the year in real estate for us in the Murphy and Hayesville NC areas as well as the Hiawasse, Blairsville and Blue Ridge GA mountains.  But don't wait thinking that potential Buyers aren't looking for the properties they want to see, making a list and comparing the best ones to see and making reservations for their visit to preview and purchase a home here.   Buyers are ready! We're ready for them - and you as a Seller should be too. If your property is off the market and you think its better to "let it rest"  and think  that waiting is a better idea "in the spring" - when does the season actually get started?    Although the official start of Spring is March 20th, we ...

Things To See and Do in Murphy NC: Historic Harshaw Chapel     Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery in Murphy North Carolina is a tranquil piece of history right in the middle of town. Built in 1850, it sits majestically on a hill overlooking the town of Murphy.   Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery is now under the control of the North Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  In 1984, it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places.   Of course, every piece of history has to have a little “mystery” attached to it as well and Harshaw Chapel and Cemetery is no exception!  It is rumored that Abram Enloe, who is buried in the cemetery, was actually the biological father of Abraham Lincoln.     You see, his mother Nancy Hanks was a servant in the Enloe household over in Ruther...

Let’s celebrate the First Day of Winter in Murphy, NC! Happy Winter Solstice and First Day of Winter on this December 21, 2013. The December solstice marks the longest night and shortest day of 2013. After the winter solstice, the days will get longer. More daylight hours during winter here in  Murphy, NC  are something to Celebrate!          So what exactly is a Solstice? The earliest humans knew that the sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. They built monuments, such as Stonehenge, to follow the sun’s yearly progress. But today we see the solstice differently. We can picture it from the vantage point of space and we know that the solstice is an astronomical event, caused by Earth’...

Murphy NC celebrates LOG CABIN DAY all year long! Log Cabin Day celebrates what was then the "Modern" home in America, and all of the lifestyle that accompanied it. Today on June 25th,  celebrate the day and appreciate the history and significance of log cabins. A great way to do that is visit them at a historical museums today, or sometime this summer head over to the western NC, north GA or east TN mountains to see a variety of Log Homes! Log Cabin Day brings you back to a quieter, simpler, more rugged era. A couple hundred years ago, life was far more rugged. They built their homes out of logs. These log cabins were solid, long lasting, and served them well. Heat was provided by an open fireplace, where they also cooked their meals. Need air conditioning in the summer? Just open the ...

Why We Chose Real Estate - Moving to the Murphy NC Mountains! Sometimes it takes half your lifetime to find the right profession and place to live, work and play. I grew up in Homestead, Florida but my Grandparents had a summer home in the cool mountains in the small town of Burnsville, NC. This is where we spent all our summers and most of that time was spent down in the Cattail Creek that flowed right outside the home. Those summers continued as I became an adult and it was on a December vacation up to Burnsville that I first saw snow on Christmas Day.  Fast forward to meeting the most patient, caring and funniest person I know, my husband Lee. We lived in North Miami Beach, FL where Lee worked in the film industry as a Grip for commercials and movies and I in downtown Miami as a grap...

Happy Father's Day 2013 Thank you to all the Fathers, Grandfathers, Uncles and Father Figuresout there that make such a difference in our lives! Father's Day in the United States is on the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. Its origins may lie in a memorial service held for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in 1907.
