Our favorite place to eat in Murphy, NC is definitely the Italian Caffe & Deli. Piero (Peter) and his lovely wife, Pietra, are originally from Italy, but fortunately for us have settled down here in the Cherokee County, North Carolina Mountains. This is a family run business and their son-in-law, Jack, and their nephew, Marco also work here. You’ll always find their granddaughter, Jayden helping Pietra or her mom, Jackie, in the kitchen too - even though she’s only five. This is a true Italian family business. This is the display case of the hand made fresh cakes, cheesecake, cannoli and tiramisu...makes your mouth water doesn't it? We always leave the Italian Caffe overly stuffed so we usually get a piece, or maybe two, to take home for the next night. Everything is made fresh and the ...

Friday nights in Murphy, NC is all about football.. You will find almost everyone in town at these games. There is so much support from the community and we have the greatest fans. I live in the Great Smoky Mountains of NC and when you sit in the stands of our football stadium your views are of the mountians . I have been going to football games for the last 8 years to support my son Ryan. He started in youth football and the last 4 years has been on the High School team.... The Bulldogs!!! Tonight is an emotional game, not only is it a playoff game but it could be the last game for my son as well as me. Don't get me wrong... I will still go to football games next year and support the team but it will feel different because my son will not be on the field instead he will serving his cou...

Murphy, NC is located just minutes from the GA and TN state line. In case you haven’t already heard, there was a huge rock slide in TN on the Ocoee River Road section of Hwy 64. Some huge boulders slid off the side of the mountain onto the road and the DOT crews were out working on them. The television camera crews happened to be filming when all of a sudden a lot more dirt, trees and rocks the size of dump trucks covered the road! Watch just what the camera crews caught…ROCK SLIDE They are saying it will take about 3 weeks to get the road cleared and open again so make sure you check for alternative routes. Drive Safe!

Veterans Day is a time to remember the brave men and women who serve our country and who protect us and fight for our freedoms that we so take for granted now a days... My husband a retired Naval Officer who I have been married to for 2 years and served this country for 28 years. He served as a Navy Seal for 18 years and said that if he had a chance to do it all over again.. HE WOULD... He was member of 3 separate Seal Teams and all of his buddies he served with never made it. My husband has been shot and stabbed numerous times and has the scars to show for it. He was on a secret mission when their aircraft went down and he was the only survivor of his team. He broke almost every bone and had to learn to walk all over again... But he still went back... You will never hear these stories...

November 11th, is Veterans Day. This is a day set aside that we remember the service of the many men and women that have given to our country. This is a day to thank the brave and honor them for keeping our country free. Please take the time, not only today, but when ever you see a veteran, to thank them and remember the sacrifices they have made for all of us. The History of Veteran’s Day November 11th, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day - the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.' As such, this new legal holiday honored Wor...

This morning I had a surprise waiting for me in the garden.  After days of clouds and rain here in Murphy, North Carolina, it was a joy to see the sun again and I was spending a few minutes strolling in the yard when I spied something bright yellow in the distance.  I was amazed to see my favorite yellow iris in full bloom.  We've had a frost already, followed by warmer weather and lots of rain, so I guess she couldn't wait till spring to show off! I'm continually surprised and pleased at how easy it is to garden in this mild climate.  After gardening for years in the frozen North near Traverse City, Michigan, followed by 5 years of trying to grow things in the limestone gravel that passes for a yard in the Florida Keys, it's a joy to have happy plants, abundant...

While going through some pictures looking for our son’s old Halloween costumes we found these photos of our little kittens. Brandon had always wanted a cat so when we moved to Murphy, North Carolina and got settled in, we set out to pick him out a little kitten. The couple we got the kitten from said “Oh, please take his little brother too,” and who could resist. So home we went with Tigger and his little brother, Eore – who of course was the sister – not the brother. So here we have Lucky and Bob-O. Aren’t they just so cute?   Lee & Carol Barbour www.LeeAndCarol.com

The Tarheel community in Murphy, North Carolina offers the best of  mountain living  with the convenience of being only minutes from schools,  restaurants and shopping.  Bordered by thousands of acres of US Forest Service and Lake Hiwassee to the north, Tarheel is home to many local business owners who live here year-round.    It's  a favorite among vacation home owners too, since you can sit on your deck and see nothing but peaceful woodlands and mountains from many of the homesites.  Lots in Tarheel range from just under an acre to estate sized parcels of 3-5 acres or more.  If you're lucky enough to have a lot that adjoins Forest Service land, it's like having a back yard that goes on for hundreds of acres, filled with native trees and mountain laurel, and home to deer...

Sunday, November 1st  is the day time "falls back" - we can all use an extra hour of sleep. So Saturday night before to go to bed, remember to change your clocks back an hour!  This is also a good time to change the batteries in your carbon monoxide and fire detectors. Make sure to pick up extra batteries while you're getting all the candy :) Daylight Saving Time has been used in the United States and many European countries since World War I. It was adopted in 1918 when Congress placed the country on Daylight Saving Time to conserve energy and resources for the war effort. Between World War I and World War II some states and communities continued to observe Daylight Saving Time. Congress enacted The Uniform Time Act of 1966 and Daylight Saving Time became observed nationally. Even thou...

I spent last weekend enjoying one of the biggest reasons to move to the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina. During an overnight trip to Asheville- another great destination that's only 2 hours from Murphy  I was treated to an incredible display.  The oldest mountains in the world covered in vivid shades of crimson and gold sprawled around me in every direction.   We took the scenic route through the Nantahala National Forest, a two lane road that follows the Nantahala River, where scenes like this await around every curve in the road.  The white water rafters weren't out, but there were plenty of fly fishermen casting for native trout. After years of living here in the Southern mountains, we finally stopped at one of the roadside flea markets for our first taste of boiled peanuts.  ...
