Can it really be 25 years have already gone by? We still feel like newlyweds - most days. Well, we might not look the same, but we still feel the same as we did way back then in 1987. This June we will also be grandparents for the first time to a little girl - how exciting! What a blessing to be happily married, best friends and a being able to working together as The Mountain Living Team in the Murphy, NC mountains.

Slightly more than 14 months ago we jumped with both feet into a puddle of RAIN - ACTIVERAIN that is.  We watched, we read, we commented, we got involved. Even though we didn’t really know what we were  doing we knew one thing for sure.  Whatever “IT” was we NEEDED to do it.  I can remember the feeling of overwhelming joy and excitement when we had our first featured post.  I was on top of the world!   I remember the first time the phone rang and the caller on the other end said “I saw your article about blah, blah, blah”.  I remember the first time a fellow ActiveRain agent called and asked if we could take a referral. I remember the first time I personally met a fellow ActiveRain agent and how we felt like we’d been friends forever.   When  I hit “submit” with this post, we will surp...

Just for the men in our lives, this is one special dayfor them... Worship of Tools Day Worship of Tools Day is always celebrated on March 11th. There are few things that the male population worships more than his tools. To some, a tool is a natural extension of their arm. So, Worship of Tools Day is a logical day of celebration.  And, it's definitely a guy thing. Please note however, there are more than a few ladies who love to work with their hands, and find today to be an important holiday. Need a birthday or Christmas gift idea for one of the "boys" in the family?  You're never lacking for tool ideas when you visit the local hardware store.Celebrate today by working with tools, and buying a tool or two. Receiving a tool as a gift today, makes this truly a special day. And your specia...

Our days are getting longer... Don't forget to set your clocks FORWARDthis weekend as we Spring Forward and enjoy more daylight! Before you go to bed on Saturday evening set your clock ahead one hour so you'll show up on time starting Sunday, March 11, 2012! This is also a good time to change the batteriesin your carbon monoxide and fire detectors. Every Spring we move our clocks one hour ahead and "lose" an hour during the night and each Fall we move our clocks back one hour and "gain" an extra hour. But Daylight Saving Time (and not Daylight Savings Time with an "s") wasn't just created to confuse our schedules. Daylight Saving Time was instituted in the United States during World War I in order to save energy for war production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight betwe...

The Black Snake in the North Carolina Mountains... It was the first camping experience for Jed. As soon as he had pitched his tent, he went for a hike in the woods. In about fifteen minutes he rushed back into camp, bleeding and dishevelled. "What happened?" asked a fellow camper. "I was chased by a black snake!" cried the frightened Jed. The camper laughed and retorted, "A black snake isn't deadly." "Listen," groaned Jed, "If he can make you jump off a fifty-foot cliff, he is!"   There are many great places and  things to do in the mountains  of NC, GA and TN. If you’re visiting or think of moving to the mountains we’d love to share more information and properties with you. Lee & Carol Barbour  ~ The Mountain living Team  www.MurphyMountainLiving.com

Yes, the unthinkable finally happened while I was out showing homes today!  It had been a great day so far as I met Clients that drove down from Asheville, NC to find a home her in the Hiawasse, Blairsville and Blue Ridge, GA mountains. We saw some great homes with awesome views of the lake and long range mountain views. At the next to last home, as I had they key to the door in my hand - I dropped it and it fell through the the deck! Oh my gosh, there was absolutely no way to get under there to find that key. All I could do was call the listing agent and apologize. Thankfully they brought out another key the next day and we were able to show the home. That one single key fell right through the decking, but had it been on a tag key ring it might not have happened at all. So now that the ...

Tornado Hit Murphy North Carolina   As many have seen or heard on the news this weekend a tornado hit Murphy North Carolina in the early evening on Friday, March 2nd. Amazingly enough, all the storms that have hit this area in the past few years have missed us.  But not this one!  On Friday evening a Tornado touched down on the west side of Cherokee County in the Hiawassee Dam area.  It skipped across Lake Hiawassee and touch down again in the Texana Community just north of town, hit a couple of businesses in downtown and then followed the commercial district east causing destruction as it went.  At one point it hopped across the major 4-lane highway and damaged Taco Bell, Ingles Grocery and WalMart before hitting several developments in the Peachtree area.   Since Saturday morning we h...

Speechless Sunday in the Murphy, NC mountains. This photo is one from a grand old home located just down the road from Murphy, NC and still in Cherokee County in the town of Marble. My what a grand home it must have been back then. Even now with time wearing down on it you can still imagine how filled with family and neighbors it must have been.  Marble is between Andrews and Murphy and this photo was take by our Coldwell Banker High Country Murphy, NC office assistant, Amanda McGaha. Besides being there for all our agents, she is also very talented and creative and has just started taking a photography class at Tri-County Community College. Thanks Amanda for sharing this great scene in our western North Carolina mountains.  For more information about Buying and Selling in Murphy, NC c...

The Mountain Living Team in Murphy, NC had a back-to-back closing today. The Roberts had their cabin listed with us at Coldwell Banker High Country and we’d also been showing them larger homes in the Murphy area for their anticipated offer and move. Well, we got their residence under contract so it was really time to get busy, narrow down the list and find them the right new home to move in to. They absolutely love the area and wanted to stay within a few miles of the very desirable subdivisions just minutes to downtown Murphy, NC.  Wells Lake is one of their favorites and wouldn’t you know we found the perfect Custom Cabin there for them. Sometimes all things in the universe work out (along with great Realtors, Lenders, Inspectors and Attorneys) and they closed on the sale of their hom...

An old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.   The old German Shepherd thinks, "Oh, no! I'm in deep trouble now!"   Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around here?"   Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.  "Whew!," says the panther, "That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!"   Meanwhile, a s...

Monday is a holiday honoring President's Day. You won't be able to do any banking or post letters, but you can stop by our office in Murphy, NC and we can show you some of our great listings! Here are some interesting facts about our Presidents...Once in the White House, each President made his mark in different ways. In fact, before Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, came to office, the White House wasn't even called the White House! People called the building the President's Palace, President's House, and the Executive Mansion. Roosevelt officially named it the White House in 1901.Theodore Roosevelt wasn't the only President to invent a new expression. Martin Van Buren, the eighth President, is sometimes credited with creating the word "OK." Van Buren was from Kinderhook, New Yor...

Bill and I were showing homes on Saturday in and around Murphy North Carolina.  While circling around the north side of Lake Hiawassee we came across the “Murphy Mercantile” at the corner of Hiawassee Dam Access Road and Joe Brown Highway.   Strangely I didn’t have my camera with me (this is a first) but Bill still stopped so I could snap a shot with my blackberry.   This is at least 25 miles out in the middle of nowhere and I’m sure he knew we wouldn’t be back this way for awhile.     The buyers thought it was charming.  Especially the sign that says “Fresh Eggs, Honey and Haircuts”.  Only in Murphy! Have a great week! Cyndi

We finally made it into our "dream home in the mountains" of Murphy, NC thanks to the tremendous help of Lee Barbour.  Even before we were in a position to buy a home here, we made contact with Lee through his office. He was aware that we were not ready to buy at that time, but I'm sure he went out of his way to answer our questions and concerns about the process. Of course when the time did come for us to for our new home, Lee was the one we wanted to work with. Lee lead us through the entire process and the concerns and questions were minimal because of his knowledge, incite and ability to anticipate the next step and keep us on top of the process.Everything went very smoothly and on time right down to the closing day. Thanks for being the best in the area. We would highly recommend L...

While driving to preview a home, Bill and I passed by Shady Grove Cemetary in Murphy NC and came across this.   The first to notice it, Bill stops and says, “Hey, you could write a post about this”!     I’m not sure, but I think this picture falls under the category of “Things That Make You Go - Hmmmm”.      Is there REALLY a need to have a mailbox at a cemetary? The best part is knowing that he too is now looking for interesting things, not only to photograph but to write about too.  To me, that is awesome! Cyndi
