Thirty-four miles off the North Carolina coast, a unique structure stands alone in the vast Atlantic, rising 85 feet above the water’s surface. The Frying Pan Tower was originally constructed to help guide ships through the dangerously shallow Frying Pan Shoals, but today serves as a tourist attraction and piece of military history.CCBY John Flannery https://www.flickr.com/people/drphotomoto/HistoryIn 1854, a lightship was stationed two miles off the southern coast of Bald Head Island to help guide large ships through the shallow waters that, in parts, only run about 35 feet deep. The lightship was manned almost constantly for 110 years until a permanent steel structure was built in the 1960’s. This new tower was named the USCG Frying Pan Light Station and was utilized by the Coast Guar...

John and Ginnette Pocaro are new to Brunswick Forest, but not new to the area. The couple maintained a home in Tinton Falls, New Jersey as well as a winter home in Southport, North Carolina for years before finally deciding to relocate full-time to Brunswick Forest.Prime LocationOne major factor that played in to the Pocaro’s eventual decision to choose Brunswick Forest for their retirement home is the community’s prime location right outside of Wilmington. When they lived in Southport, they often found themselves driving in to Wilmington, so they wanted to live somewhere closer to more nightlife, shopping and dining. The businesses in The Villages at Brunswick Forest are much-appreciated by the Pocaros who love that they don’t have to leave the neighborhood to enjoy a night out.Active...

North Carolina has long been well-known for its craft beer industry, and this distinction has only increased over the past decade thanks in part to a 2006 bill that got rid of the alcohol by volume limit on beers produced in the state from 6% to 15%. This increase helped open the door for a wider variety of craft-brewed beers, and led to a huge increase in the state’s number of microbreweries. Both within Brunswick Forest and right outside of the community, residents can find a large variety of locally-brewed craft beers in retail shops and restaurants, or they can opt to visit the breweries themselves to see how the beer is produced and sample the product on-site.Flytrap BrewingFlytrap Brewing is one of the newest breweries to hit the Port City. Kevin and Maria Murphy moved to Brunswick Forest April 2014 from Ossining, New York in the Hudson Valley and say North Carolina feels more like home to them now than New York, despite having lived their whole lives in the Northeast and New England. “The last time we flew to North Carolina from New York, I felt like this was the direction I was supposed to be traveling,” says Maria.Kevin holds a similar sentiment. An avid surfer in his youth, he enjoyed looking at surf photography that was, for the most part, shot on the North Carolina coast. Because of this, he always had fond feelings for the area. “I just felt like I needed to be in North Carolina,” he says. The couple spends a lot of their free time at Wrightsville Beach. It was not just their innate love for the area that led the Mur...
