This afternoon I decided to drop in to the new business I have been seeing on the corner of Barnwell and Church Streets, My Place and Bubbalini's. I had heard from Gary Prichard that it was a new place for assisting the youth in Henderson County and I wanted to check it out. Very impressive. I found a huge space that was visually THE Place for kids.It had the feel of a lot of fun putting it together. Founded by, and Ceo of, My Place is Venerable Pannavati. She started Generation "Y" to serve 18-24 year-olds with housing and living skills. The following is their mission statement taken from their website: “My Place” is a non-profit, transitional housing program for “unaccompanied” and homeless youth in Hendersonville, NC between the ages of 18 and 24. The comprehensive program incorpora...

This is Ms. Winnie as a "babe puppy" a few years ago.  I must say she is as adorable now!  My hubby and I saved her from a puppy mill litter.  We even paid for her to be a companion to our hyper cock-a-poo Mr. Willie.  Winnie is allegedly a mistake from the mating of a miniature Doberman and a poodle.  Anyone's guess as to the true facts, but, we love her whatever her mixture.Okay -- to the reason for this blog.  Winnie woke me at 4 AM on Sunday from her crate (she has the most amazing array of sounds she can make to try and explain her issues!)  This was definately I need to get outside wail (she can actually howl which I have never heard that sound come out of a canine before.  Many folks have been impressed with her howl.)That was the beginning of an "out" every 2-5 minutes!!  I fina...

Cross over the bridge along a boldly flowing stream and listen to the waterfall on your right as you ascend the steps leading to the  best smells in town, and the soft sounds of relaxing music. There you will find Greg and Angela Quinn and a wonderful Gift Shop. Angela Pressley Quinn is a certified Massage Therapist. She received Massage Therapy Certification in Asheville at the North Carolina School of Natural Healing, earning her LMBT. She worked in several other locations prior to opening her own studio in 2007. Angela and her husband Greg purchased the property at 1531 Haywood Road (Highway 191) in October of 2007 and while Angela continued to give massages, Greg lovingly restored the building back to a beautiful and natural space. Now while Angela gives relaxing Massages, Greg ma...

I just received my first Seed catalog in the mail. For me this is the beginning of spring. It seems like they come earlier and earlier- am I wrong? I am immediately excited when I get the first one, a yearly ritual of starting to plan out the next summers vegetables. I always stay up late drawing and measuring and plotting and planning. What will I rotate this year and where will I plant things to get them to grow better this time. This year will be extra exciting. My previous yard was too small for much. I moved here from Iowa and always had huge gardens there. I plotted and planned and then grew and canned and dried. But it has been almost 16 years since I left Iowa and I have had little or no space for it since. Last year I bought a place with a fabulous yard. With 2.25 acres of woo...

The end of the year brings great sadness and changes for Historic Downtown Hendersonville. The face of our streets are shifting and soon we may be looking at a ghost town. Four businesses have closed and more may follow with the beginning of the new year. I was asking myself how this happened. It has seemed so safe and secure here and I missed it. I know that there is a bad economy out there and I know that money is tight and businesses are hurting. Sadly they are and have been hurting more than I realized.   My belief has always been to support local businesses. I have avoided using big box stores for years. The reason is that I know shopping at Wal-Mart sends all of it's profits right to Springdale Arkansas, and into one family's hands. Businesses like this always start that big sucki...

This past weekend I had one of those "technical computer storms" -- malfunctioning "puter"!  These things always seem to happen when you least expect them.Friday I had shown some property in the community where I live and didn't expect to hear back from these folks before Monday.  Sooo, my plans for Saturday were to slob about doing Christmas cards, cleaning the homefront up a wee bit and maybe even decorate something inside the home to recognize the season.  All was going well until about 11 AM when our clients called an were looking for some more info on a property in another location that I had mentioned to them and they would like to see.  Great says I -- let me pull it up on the computer and I can than go ahead an schedule the showing for that afternoon.  As I turn from the phone i...

Someone thinks it is cold out there and has been sitting in the path of hot air from the wood stove for hours watching the fire in the stove.

This afternoon I was starving for comfort food. The kind that you scarf down hot andeat until you pop open. I thought about making a big casserole of mac and cheese, the ultimate comfort food. I actually thought long and hard about it. It is so cold and nasty outside and I just want to be warm  So after much thought I decided on a grilled cheese with a salad. Still good comfort food but with some green. Winter just does that to me. I want to eat everything in sight and especially the gooey, fattening stuff. I feel like a bear ready for hibernation. I want to curl up in a warm ball and sleep until spring. But since I am not a bear, I just need to eat and get my b--- back out there. Guess I better get finish this so I can start looking at houses again. How are you handling the winter urge...

This picture doesn't do justice to what I was seeing across the street from our beautiful historic courthouse located on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville, NC.  It's a very impressive site. The courthouse was built in 1904-1905 and no longer is utilized as the Henderson County Courthouse but has been restored and is definately a landmark in Hendersonville.       This beautiful structure was preserved, restored and reopened to the public in April 2008.  That's a statue of goddess Justice atop the majestic, gleaming dome.  The Courthouse now houses a historical Henderson County Museum.Residents and visitors alike enjoy taking time to relax in the spacious frontage to this historical monument and visiting the numerous remembrances to our military. For further information on the museum a...

Smart selling requires that you prepare your house for market by evaluating its physical condition, including systems such as plumbing, heating and electrical, and components such as the foundation, roof, doors and windows, floors, fixtures and finishes. The time to begin the evaluation depends on how soon you want or need to sell. If you know the house has been well maintained, less time is needed. In most cases, allow thirty to sixty days before listing. Today most buyers demand that a house be in move-in condition, meaning that it's structurally sound, in good general repair with no obvious signs of deferred maintenance, and meticulously clean, attractive and inviting.  If your house doesn't look ready to occupy, buyers will quickly move on, knowing they have many options. Don't expec...
