Thousands of people traveled to Havelock, N.C. for the 29th Annual Havelock Chili Festival October 16 and 17th.  As our first major cold front of the year pushed through the area, keeping daytime temperatures in the mid 50's, it was chili eating weather. Havelock is the" Gateway City" that starts at the front gate of MACS Cherry Point, and active, retired military, civilians both young and old came together for the food and events. This annual event is a big draw for family fun and is very affordable for the family budget. For more details on this community fund raiser for local charities go to http://homer56.wordpress.com/2009/10/18/havelock-n-c-chili-festival-draws-record-crowd/

The last couple of "first time home buyers" that have contacted me did not really understand that they don't have until December 1, 2009 to take advantage of this potential 10% discount on a home. If they buy a $80,000 home they could get up to a $8,000 tax credit on that purchase. In our area most lenders are recommending that we give everyone 45-50 days to "CLOSE" the purchase.  If we figure 30 days per month and subtract 50 days from November 30, we end up with the first week of October as the "beginning of the end".  If buyers have not submitted an offer to buy a home and started the loan process and the inspection process, there is a strong possibility that they won't be able to close by November 30.  It's my understanding as of today this program will end and there is no extenstio...

In my opinion the biggest risk for home buyers in 2009 is the failure to take advantage of the 2009 First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit. This program could have had other provisions included to help our clients navigate this challenging time in our economic cycle, however it still has a lot to offer individuals and families that can qualify. Up to $8000.00 or 10% of the purchase price of a home for qualified buyers. Very limited repayment conditions, i.e. own for 3 years, anti-flipping clause. Income limits of $75,000 single and $150,000 joint filing incomes so lot's of people can qualify Easy way to claim the credit IRS form 5405 Aimed at home ownership, not speculation.  Owner occupied only, in the U.S. My concern is that in North Carolina it seems that loans are taking longer to proces...

Money from the government!  Yes that's right. If you have not purchased a house in the last 3 years you could be entitled to some money from Uncle Sam. With the lowest interest rates in years and the tax stimulus it is a great time to buy a home. There have been a lot of misconceptions about the new house stimulus package.  The information that I have is that you will receive 10% od the cost of the house from the U.S. government. Currently there are many homes to choose from or locations on which to build.  Considering all these factors; loan rates, tax bonus, and current selections of homes  it appears to be a good time to invest.

The House is expected to vote on a bill Thursday that would let bankruptcy judges erase some mortgage debt for troubled homeowners and shield mortgage servicers modifying loans from bondholder lawsuits. Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC) said the provisions should prod mortgage companies to loosen home loan terms on a scale that they have not done before

Shoppers who live in the Havelock area and members of the MCAS Cherry Point community now have another option for shopping in Havelock. Wal-Mart has opened a store near the "back gate" of MCAS Cherry Point on US 70.  This neighborhood store has groceries as well as the usual merchandise you are used to finding in the big "box" stores. Until the store opened in Havelock the closest Wal-Marts were in New Bern, about 20 miles or Morehead City about 18 miles. This store is also very convenient for the communites of Stately Pines and Carolina Pines which are about 4 ans 3 miles respectively west of the Havelock Wal-Mart. For military families, the Commisary on board MCAS Cherry Point provides great shopping (cost plus 5%surcharge) for active duty, retired, reservist and other qualified shopp...

Military spouses have a reputation for helping others - call it version of the military "we take care of our own" philosophy. But they are among the worst when it comes to asking for help for ourselves. This inability to ask for help when we need it can be the result of a lot of different factors:•You figure everyone is already dealing with enormous challenges.•You don't recognize when we're at the end of our rope.•You know others who whine, complain and demand help yet don't take advantage of the resources available to them - and we don't want to sound like that.•You've been taught to be proud and to never take "handouts."•You don't know how to ask for help, even when others offer. There are many great ways to ask for help and it doesn't mater witch one you choose as long as you learn  t...

At a meeting Thursday night, officials of the department asked for local help in making the changes safe and attractive. More than 110 residents, who use U.S. 70 as their Main Street, filled the Havelock Tourist and Events Center looking for answers to questions about the state's Super 70 plan. There was a map showing a planned U.S. 70 Bypass of Havelock and property owners will be notified when land acquisition for the bypass begins in 2010. The Transportation Department hopes to start building the bypass in 2015 and have it ready for traffic by 2019. The U.S. 70 Corridor Commission will also make a presentation and hear public comment at Brinson Memorial Elementary School Cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 31. Presenters said 45 percent...

A new pier is in use on the Beaufort side of the Morehead/Beaufort bridge.  It's on the opposite side of the bridge from where the old Causeway Pier used to be.  Fishermen (or should that be fisherpersons?) are already taking advantage of the great weather of the past week and using the pier to full advantage.   If you're moving to the Havelock/New Bern area soon and need to know about outdoor recreation, fishing, golfing, boating, kayaking, hiking, we've got it all, call or email me.  jeantmitchell@aol.com or 252.665.0413.

The Marine Corps Air Show is at Cherry Point this year in the first week of May.  If you've never attended an air show you're in for a treat.  Words can't describe the performances presented by our Marines.  Some things need to be seen to be believed and this show deserves that description.  Please check out the air show site.  If you've been thinking about visiting Havelock, this may be a good week-end to plan a family trip.

The weather temperature and the number of trailered boats coming down NC Hwy 70 are directly proportional.  The higher the temp the more boats of all kinds.  Red, blue, brown, camoflage, large, small, I've even seen some checkered paint jobs.  It's that time again.  When blowing the dust out of your inboard or outboard don't forget about safety on the water.  Be sure you have working communications equipment and the required safety devices required by the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard station at Ft. Macon can give you all the information you need to be safe and legal on North Carolina waterways.  Safe Boating courses for newbies can be found at BoatUS.    If sailing is your interest, we have a great sailing school within a short drive from Havelock at Oriental, NC.   Then if want to live ...

Eastern North Carolina has plenty of wildlife; deer, wild turkeys, foxes, bear, you name it.  And I've seen birds of all kinds but yesterday (Sun. Mar. 11, '07) I saw the Rolls Royce of birds.  I tip-toed quietly to get as close as I could and saw for the first time, a magnificent full-grown bald eagle standing on the bank of the Neuse River in the North Harlowe area off Shady View Beach Road.  It was eating a puppy drum and was huge!  My heart was beating hard and I was thrilled as I tried not to scare it away.  Seeing the eagle tells me two things.  First, the water must be relatively clean since eagles don't thrive in just any old environment.  Two.  The puppy drum are running in the river.  Drum are a migratory fish and move in the Spring and Fall.  The weather should be warmin...
