No matter when you come to the Outer Banks there always seems to be a breeze blowing. Now Mother Nature is going to work when Duke Energy plans to install 3 test wind towers off the coast of Hatteras next year. The test towers will be monitored to see how effective and what impact they will have on generating "green" electricity. If the test proves to be successful a large scale wind farm will be built approximately 7 miles off the coast of Hatteras in the Pamlico Sound. For years the state had plans to try and harness the wind that continually blows on the Outer Banks. Now with the "green" movement all the rage the timing is right. Many local and state leaders were in Hatteras last week to kick off the campaign and talk to local residents. There are already 2 wind towers on the Outer B...

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore beach closures will begin this month for the 2009 nesting season for the Piping Plovers. The closures are subject to change at any time depending on when and where the birds decide to build a nest. You can get updates on beach closures from the National Park Service. Last week an update was giving to Judge Boyle who is overseeing the case by Park Superintendent Mike Murray:  "A beach-driving agreement brought a big change to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, but it might not be the only reason for a bounce in successful bird and turtle nesting, the park's superintendent told a federal judge Thursday. Superintendent Mike Murray was in court to give a status report on last year's consent decree to U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle. He said beach closing...

It's a good thing no one knew before hand about the recent trip on November 11th, Jimmy Buffett made to Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina because there would have been Parrotheads, like myself all over the place. It seems the guys at Real Kiteboarding in Hatteras ran into Jimmy a few years ago over in the British Virgin Islands while surfing. They had no idea that he was coming when he pulled up in their parking lot in a vegetable powered conversion van. As the story goes Jimmy was taking some time off traveling up the east coast when he decided to drop by for some fishing, surfing, and good times. How awesome it must have been to spend time with the man that has made millions of people dream of the islands and a cool boat drink. Check out my blog post Jimmy Buffett C...

The beaches of the Outer Banks has once again made the famous Dr. Beach Top 10 Beaches in the USA. Last year Ocracoke beach claimed the #1 on the list. Once a beach has made it to #1 it is then taken out of the running. So this year it was Cape Hatteras National Seashore beach that made the list at #8. It seems that for the last few years an Outer Banks beach has made the list. That is one of the reasons that millions of people come to the Outer Banks to vacation and buy 2nd homes or to retire. The Outer Banks offers great weather, a relaxed family atmosphere, great local food, world class fishing, surfing and best of all the beaches are fantastic.    Here is the list for 2008 AMERICA'S BEST BEACHES 2008 1. Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida 2. Hanalei Beach, Kauai,...

If you are planning a vacation on Hatteras Island this summer then leave the fireworks at home. After numerous protests from residents about the careless use of fireworks on Hatteras Island the Dare County board of commissioners banned the sale and use of all types of fireworks on Hatteras Island. The sale and use of fireworks that explode, such as firecrackers, or fireworks that project up more than 14 feet, such as bottle rockets and skyrockets, have always been illegal in the state of North Carolina. The law was recently relaxed to allow sparkler type fireworks, but those are now also banned in Hatteras. Hatteras Island is not the first area on the Outer Banks to ban all types of fireworks. When Duck became a town one of the first things they did was to outlaw the sale and use of all...
