Charlotte's SECOND Snow Day 2009 Just thought I'd share the excitement of the day here in Charlotte!  We're 'snowbound' again--not really but, we like to say we can't get out so we can sit home and eat bread and drink milk all day and look out at the beautiful fluffy stuff!   Enjoy the photos!    My street actually has snow on it this time! Backyard walkway to the pool--the snow 'stuck' this year!        My Barney making tracks in the snow.

Are you contemplating a move to Charlotte NC? What are your worst fears about the move?  Could it be the weather?!?!  The weather in Charlotte is a popular topic for people considering a move here and fears about tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding and other weather events are among the questions I am asked most often by potential newcomers. Relax.  Here is what newcomers from the northern United States need to know about Charlotte weather. You will love our mild winters.  Cold weather doesn't really begin until after Christmas and it usually ends around March 15 when the first flowering trees and daffodils begin to bloom.  From March 15th through June 15th, Charlotte has one long glorious spring blooming season. Leave your closets of winter coats, hats, gloves and boots behind when you mov...

Perhaps there is hope,  Myrtle Beach SC has seen consumers begin to book the usually busy Valentine's Day weekend. Myrtle Beach Hotels on the Oceanfront and those at Barefoot Resort are beginning to reach up to 70% occupancy in advance bookings for the two day weekend. Consumer confidence seems to be ticking up in the Real Estate Market as well with a sudden increase in interest with increased leads across the board. Let's see how 2009 develops.  For Myrtle Beach as a destination and relocation area,  encouraging beginnings are taking shape. Myrtle-Beach.com

WOW, I have created quite the pipeline w/Realtors and their short sale clients within the last 6 weeks and I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! SHORT SALES are taking the nation by storm and despite the economic hardships, people are more than happy to let their home go these days. I hate to see numerous families in this financial dispair, but if I can help them out and refer a listing to an agent, it's a WIN WIN for all! The Economy is brutal right now, this is no surprise. American families are losing jobs left and right, property values are decreasing, and of coarse we have the "FORECLOSURE/SHORT SALE TSUNAMI" to add the icing on the cake. What is the world coming to? It seems a if this whole "Wall Street" hype has created an evil dark pit for our country. Bernie Madoff, the fall of Leh...

Charlotte NC Restaurant Review- Mickey & Mooch, The Queen's Feast I recently wrote a review of one of our favorite Charlotte restaurants, Mickey & Mooch at the Arboretum. That prompted another visit to the restaurant for my partner, Scott Morrison's 40th birthday! (birthday post coming soon!)  Last evening, The Maxwell House Group and a few friends and family, had the privilege of  dining during Charlotte's Queen's Feast!  What a delicious menu and our wait staff was absolutely wonderful, quite possibly the most attentive we've ever had! Mickey & Mooch operates with a deceptively simple premise: they create a casually elegant atmosphere and a fine meal at an exceptional price. 'Mickey & Mooch-The Other Joint' continues to win awards from premier culinary publications like the Zagat ...

There are two new businesses that are relocating to the Charlotte area - an oil refinery, that will move to chester county and a marketing firm that will target nascar teams.  The NASCAR business is a marketing firm that wants to help racing companies get their names and brands out to the public. Even though the racing industry is facing some pretty serious budget problems, the owner of the company is taking a risk and expanding a business. He is setting up shop right next door to the race teams in Mooresville NC. For a marketing company, this may make good sense. In an economic downturn, it doesn't make sense to stop advertising or stop doing what you were doing in times of plenty to get the word out to potential customers, although it is more difficult because of leaner budgets. You m...

The EpiCentre will be Charlotte's newest hotspot for dining, drinking and entertainment.  Strike City Lanes has just opened up in the new development in uptown Charlotte. The whole venue is designed to make uptown Charlotte more inviting and more appealing to city dwellers. The city is not devoid of things to do and places to go, but they currently are decentralized. They are spread out or clustered into neighborhoods that grew up around suburbs when charlotte was growing.  The bowling alley opened its doors and is having a invitation only party this week, the Business Journal reported. It is just one of the fun businesses that are going in downtown that will make uptown more lively more upbeat and younger.  The Epicentre is located 210 E Trade St in Charlotte, NC which is right downtow...

The Charlotte Business Journal reports that the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, part of the North Carolina University system, is opening up its ticketing program to the public. They are selling personal seat licenses to people who want to see their school play football in 2013. Football is one of the things that UNCC lacked. The school, which was once known as Charlotte College, is charlotte's largest university by far. But it is not the only university in the state.  The expansion into football is a huge undertaking for the University. It is also a huge potential money maker. With 23,000 students, it would have a huge fan base to start with. All those students means a ton of alumni.  It also carries considerable risk because it costs a lot of money to get a football team and...

In a sign of changing times, and even more importantly, a changing economy, North Carolina is considering a statewide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars. That is big news because of the economic history of the state. Tobacco played a huge role in the economic development of North Carolina and the city of Charlotte. It was a huge cash crop and an important export in the colonial times.  North Carolina was home to some of the largest tobacco companies, and a few years ago, you could even tour cigarette manufacturing facilities in the Charlotte area. These days, it seems, Charlotte is following the lead of some other states and cities around the country which have banned smoking. Many bars and restaurants have banned smoking in California and New York.  You can tell me whether it's a b...

So the Superbowl is coming up tomorrow. Are you ready? Everyone seems to have their own way of celebrating. It also seems like it is a cultural holiday. People make elaborate plans and they have a ritual about what they do each year.  I think it is about past time for you to buy a TV and set it up for your big party tomorrow, but the electronics stores are doing everything in their power to get you to buy something right now.  Actually that brings up a good point. As retailers are offering deep discounts to shoppers and consumers, it might be a good time to stop and think about the decisions you have made in terms of real estate, and more specifically about Charlotte NC Real Estate. I can't tell you when the perfect time to buy for yourself is, but as the economy deteriorates, there is ...

Charlotte also has a busines publication in addtion to the regular Charlotte Observer Newspaper. It focuses, as its name suggests, on business news and probably goes into more detail and depth than the Charlotte Observer does. Or at least it thinks it does.  The Charlotte Observer also has a business department and business reporters, but the business journal is meant to serve a certain type of reader that wants to see what is going on in the community. There are a bunch of different journals for different cities.  It's an interesting read and a valuable tool for a real estate agent because it keeps me informed about what the business community is up to. The journal gets word out about new land deals and new companies that are relocating to the area or out of the area, which affects dem...

Charlotte's hospital system, called Carolina Healthcare has extended its reach even further out of the Charlotte region.  It has the most advanced hospital in the region in Charlotte, but also owns clinics and smaller hospitals throughout the Charlotte Metro area and the state. Recently, they announced that they were partnering with Scotland County Regional Medical Center. It is a trend that is happening all over the United States, they say. Hospitals are consolidating. Especially small rural hospitals are making sure they are affiliated with a larger chain of hospitals. I suppose there isn't any business that doesn't see benefits from franchising.  Scotland County is home to Laurinburg. Both are on US 74, which is Charlotte's lifeline to the beach. Well, it's your lifeline to the beach...

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University squared off in Raleigh today. The Tar Heels beat State by about 20 points. Things got heated in the last few seconds when State's Ben McCauley hit the Heel's Mike Copeland with a really hard foul with 1.9 seconds left in the game. Copeland got right back up and let McCauley know that he was really angry about it.  They both got a technical foul out of the deal. But Roy Williams, Chapel Hill's coach, sent Copeland to the locker room for the rest of the game because of the way he got up and charged after McCauley. It has already caused a ruckus on the internet and in Charlotte. You can see it at the Charlotte Observer's website and the Raleigh News and Observer's website. Reading some of the comments on th...

The Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra is coming to Charlotte. Dublin, Ireland that is. A cursory internet search turned up some interesting information. The Dublin Orchestra is not like the London Philharmonic or the Berlin Philharmonic, it disbanded after World War II and is finally making a comeback. The current director is taking the orchestra on its first american tour. It is a great opportunity to see a world class orchestra play music. I don't want to take away from the Charlotte Symphony, but I don't they are competing on the same level. I think the Dublin Philharmonic is competing with the London Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic for prestige and clout and probably recording contracts as well.  I really can't compare the to the Charlotte Symphony because I haven't heard the...

The Charlotte Observer is the newspaper serving Charlotte, NC. I'm not going to make any pronouncements about what I think about its coverage of certain events, but I will tell you a little about the paper. It is a McClatchy owned paper which means that it is owned by the same company that owns the Sacramento Bee and the Kansas City Star. It means that it is a pretty big paper in terms of the medium sized markets in the United States. Charlotte NC is the 19th largest city in the United States after all. Obviously, it's not the New York Times or the Washington Post, and doesn't carry that kind of brand with it, but it is a big daily newspaper. It has won four pulitzer prizes in its day.  Its website is ok. It has started to diversify its online offerings by adding a website targeted at m...

Yes its bad out there. It is hard to turn on the TV news and not see something Bad about Housing. Our market hovers between 50 and 65% of 2007 volume, but that means we have a similar sales volume to 2003. But prices are doing much better A Texas Broker hit it on the head when she stated: All Real Estate Is Local. ALL. You Wouldn't Check the National Weather to determine what kind of coat to put on today, Would You? January so far has produced 2 new sale contracts for buyers, and two sales for bank owned homes as well. Plus 6-8 new client calls, and more than 30 new email inquiries. The weather's not so bad here either. Charlotte Home Buyer Resources   So why do we listen to the national talking heads? Here is the deal: 60% of all foreclosures are in 4 states, California, Nevada, Arizon...

(Homes By Cross, Inc. )
At kick-off time my clients had won the toss and have chosen to sell their existing home.  Market conditions were causing a lot of incomplete passes. By halftime we were scoreless. It was time to change the game plan to meet the market conditions.  My clients were ready for a big play. So I contacted the agents once more who showed the house. One agent said their client still needed to sell his house. Incomplete pass.  My clients were feeling the pressure to sell like it was a two minute warning.  We huddled and decided to do an end run. We the Sellers were going to make a Buyer an offer. I called the agent who showed the house twice and communicated that the Seller was making an offer to include a contract with a very tempting price.   The offer was received for a long completion. The ...

For the past ten years, Charlotte NC homeowners have been very lucky to live in an area with a "Goldilocks" economy and real estate market.  I define a "Goldilocks" real estate market as one that is healthy, thriving and neither too hot nor too cold.  Home appreciation never hit the highs of areas like South Florida or California nor has the Charlotte market crashed to the current lows of those marketplaces.  The Charlotte NC real estate market has always been "just right." Now, however, Charlotte may begin to feel some of the same pressures as other parts of the country as the city grapples with job losses in the financial sector.  The downward pressure on home prices may mean more homeowners will owe more on their homes than the properties are worth on the current market.  Some of the...
