Nestled south of Sanford along the Lee / Harnett County line, Broadway was formed in the late 1800's by early settlers coming to the area to distill turpentine, due to the plentitude of pine trees. At that time there was a post office that catered to Harnett and Moore County (some of which is now Lee County). Later farming grew to become the predominant industry of the area. To this day, farming still plays a large role.    Broadway has become a mecca for those who want the quiet, compassionate ways of a small community. Yet, Broadway is experiencing growth of many quality housing developments and small businesses to help make this town an even better place to shop and do businessQuoted as the "incarnate Mayberry", Broadway carries a unique sense Broadway carries a unique sense of t...

My family decided to visit the NC Veterans' Memorial in Broadway, NC this Memorial Day.  Our local school system decided that Memorial Day would be a school day this year, so we visited after school let out.  It was a beautiful spring afternoon and this memorial was a beautiful place to visit.  The memorial is located on the corner of Main Street and McLeod Avenue, just across from Broadway Elementary School. As you approach the memorial, there are two main plaques.  This plaque is to the right of the gazebo.  This plaque has the symbols of the branches of the Armed Forces and has a beautifully worded statement about how American Forces have helped to provide the freedoms' we hold so dear to this day. A similar plaque is to the left of the gazebo.  This plaque outlines the purpose of t...
