Ok, so we all catch the flu and the cold germs and was I surprised, where they hang out the most. If you’re like me I always seem to get the summer cold, winter cold and one more thrown in for the pharmacy isles profits. I do take the flu shot and have been fortunate for a really long time to have never suffered the flu. Type A, even though it was included in this year’s combo shot is running ramped in our area so much for my feel good protected feeling. Not that I am a germ-a-phobic but I do carry hand sanitizer all the time, refill it from those handy quart size pumps you buy at Costco or Sams. I picked up a great idea, want to increase the alcohol content that is the germ killer and at the same time make it smell better, then buy green alcohol and add a half a bottle. The additional ...

A love of art and animals is what Atlanta artist B. Evan Davis says inspired her to create “Artists to the Rescue”, a group of artists who donate a portion of their proceeds from non-gallery art shows to animal rescue groups. “I’ve always been passionate about animal rescue and  “Artists to the Rescue” is a natural way for me to contribute to a rescue organization and their quest to end the suffering of homeless pets” says Davis. From February 1 through April 30, Elements Spa will be hosting an art show featuring B. Evan Davis at 29 W. French Broad Street, in French Broad Place. All of the art on display will be available for purchase and 20% of the proceeds will be donated to Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue (CAAR), a local non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing animals f...

OK so it's nearly the dead of winter and you might be wondering why I am writing about a garden center and a couple Plant Professionals, but before long life will be budding, lilies will be popping their heads out the ground with blooms and you will be asking yourself it's past time calling David & Hope Janowitz of New Leaf Garden Market for those barren spots. I have been my neighbors across the valley on the same road for some time, and to watch the growth (no pun intended) of a barren piece of land to what now is a top notch garden center, thriving and full of life has amazed me. Oh if I had a green thumb as they do. And as neighbors I am thrilled to see their successes and wanted to share some of their web site with you.   New Leaf Garden Market Having lived on the same hill now si...

Brevard Waterfall Summary: Life is great living in North Carolina, especially in the Mountains, where you can enjoy the crisp, morning air and a cup of coffee while taking in the scenic beauty that surrounds you.  However, this morning you discover that there's no water coming from your kitchen faucet!  You don't pay a Brevard water bill, so it's not some sinister plot.  Your well has never given you problems before, but maybe you should have been paying attention to the recent newspaper articles about drought... What is the source of that water you take for granted?  You thought that ground water supplies were just a problem in the aquifers of the coastal plain, doesn't the ground water system work differently in the Mountains?  Maybe you know that it's possible to contaminate a well,...

Every year the folks at Remodeling Magazine look at 35 remodeling projects to determine their value when it comes time to sell the home. The Cost vs Value study covers 80 cities in nine regions of the country. Because of some "ties" the top ten places were occupied by nine exterior replacement projects and four additions, or non-replacement projects. The top two exterior projects were a front door replacement and a garage door replacement. Also included in the top projects were deck additions, minor kitchen remodeling, and attic or basement remodels. North Carolina falls into the South Atlantic region, along with Washington, DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The study describes the 35 projects as either Additions, Remodel, or Replacement and then bre...

The holidays are a wonderful time of year filled with festive parties, glittering decorations, and good times with friends and family. If you have pets, though, this can be particularly dangerous time of year for them. Here are 10 safety tips for keeping your pets happy and healthy this holiday season. 1. If you have a live Christmas tree, make sure your pets do not drink the water in the tree stand. These trees are heavily treated with pesticides and preservatives which leach into the water and can make your pet very sick. It's also a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria. Cover the tree stand with the tree skirt or anything that will block your pet from getting to the water. Be sure your pet has plenty of fresh water of her own so the tree water is less attractive. 2. Shiny orname...

Small towns like Brevard, NC seem to move to a different rhythm than larger cities. It's one of the reasons we moved here. We enjoy the quieter, slower way of life in the mountains. If you're living a hectic, fast paced life, skip the holiday madness and head to the mountains for a change of altitude. Take some time to enjoy a cool brisk hike through the mountains with nothing but the sound of the crunching leaves under your feet to break the quiet. Stroll leisurely down main street, enjoying the art galleries, shops, and restaurants. At day's end do a little star gazing or just warm your toes by a roaring fire at a creek side cabin. It's all right here in Brevard, NC. Come this month to enjoy all the holiday festivities and you'll feel like you've been taken back in time and made part ...

When it's time to buy a home, it's also time to select a buyer's agent. This is so critical to be represented with your interests in this all important transaction. But how do you choose one? First and foremost not all buyers' agents have gone through the extensive training, or hold the credentials of a REBAC agent. Here are some of the most significant issues to consider and questions to ask when interviewing your Accredited Buyer's Representative or for any agent you may be talking with. As my motto says "Not all agents are equal" and this is so true. If you ask agents that right off the top of their head can't answer these simple questions below then you should run! If I had to add some other questions it would be "how much is your agent investing in their own business'? Visit the Ka...

Did you know that it pays to work with a Realtor? Here is a report that not only justifies why to use a Realtor but gives you the statistics as to what the buyers and sellers thought of their agents. As I have said before "Not all agents are equal". So when choosing your next Realtor be sure and give thought to whom, why and what realtor you should choose. The below information is from the Realtor association and there is allot of truth to the findings. When choosing your Realtor for the Transylvania (Brevard and surrounding areas),  Hendersonville, Asheville NC, and Sapphire areas, ask yourself if experience counts, do designations that Realtors work hard to achieve count, which is the right company, is the agent a full, part time agent that will guarantee they will work for your best ...
