Hearing the furnace kick on for the first time in the year is a bittersweet occurrence!   I know that the house temperature has to drop to 56 degrees before that happens. For the house to drop to 56 degrees, I know it has to be pretty darned chilly outside. I looked outside and there it was…the first activity of flurries.                   No big though! One of the many reasons people want to move to the mountains of Western North Carolina is to fully experience all of the seasons of the year. Mimi Foster made a beautiful comment in response to one of my autumn photographs. To paraphrase, she said if she could live anywhere she would live in autumn. Her statement reminds me of one of the reasons I live in Western North Carolina - to experience and embrace the wonders of all four seasons We are totally living in autumn here in the mountains of Western North Carolina and it is perfect. Our humidity is low and the leaves are crunchy beneath our footsteps. It's been hanging on the deck ever since Monica gave it to us one Christmas about a dozen years ago.  When dew or rain touches it, we have Diamonds and Rust.  The simplest of gifts can provide the greatest of pleasures.  I must have 100 photos of this piece of rusting metal.   Today, I share two of them and hope you'll also find yourself humming Joan Baez's song throughout the day.  You remember "Diamonds and Rust, I've had enough...but I feel so much better dressed in love". 09/14/2011

Do you find that views of forests and trees interchangeable? Almost everyone is guilty of occasionally not seeing the forest for the trees.  Some are equally guilty of seeing the rot and missing the tree!   Today I chose to appreciate the forest within the tree.  This lichen forest is about 1 inch by two inches and resides in a poplar tree that would need three adults holding hands to encircle the trunk.  Just another example of opening my eyes right here at home in Balsam, NC.   Forests and trees?  I love them all.   08/28/2011

    I didn't want to walk today. I thought about everything that beckoned to be accomplished at the office. I just wanted to shut it all out and stay in the comfort zone of home...play with the dogs, read books, watch television, play on the computer, listen to music, eat bad choice food and put it all off until tomorrow.   I didn't want to walk today, but I put on my socks and shoes.  I thought about my handsome father who used to travel, go fishing, play tennis, climb ladders and who probably would have given anything in the last months of his life to just be able to take a walk.  I thought about our friend and neighbor who is just a couple of years older than me battling Stage Four pancreatic cancer and tied my shoes.  I thought about my best friend whose back hurts and heartbeat is... 08/26/2011

  Today I've been thinking about southern exposure and the splendor of the skies over Balsam.   It's hard to believe our luck sometimes when I consider how fortunate we are to live in paradise of the mountains in Western North Carolina.     While I was transferring photos from my camera to a flash drive, I was struck by the number of shots I've taken of the skies from our own front porch, deck and upper yard.  There were dozens of them, no two alike.  That's just it...give me a few clouds and I could sit with a camera, take one shot every two minutes and no two shots would be the same.   Our own private theater in the sky.   Moving from Florida, where directional exposure doesn't matter - it's all flat, no moutains to block sunlight in the winter - we never even considered making southe... 08/13/2011

The school bus schedule coincides with my morning walk - the clearest indication of all that it is indeed Back to School time.       I live in Balsam, NC which straddles the county lines of Jackson and Haywood.  As a result, students living in Balsam can elect to go to either Jackson County Public Schools OR Haywood County Public Schools.  The bus that runs down my road between 6:55 and 7:02 everyday is a Jackson County bus.  Between the two counties there are probably close to 100 school buses and those who pay attention to bus schedules are probably glad to be able to access the schedules through either county's school website.       On a selfish note, I like the bus schedule on my road - it makes for a good target to compete against for improving my timing on my walk!  I've never me... 08/12/2011

One of the best parts about living in Balsam, Sylva or Waynesville, North Carolina is the proximity of the great Blue Ridge Parkway.  Miles and miles of awe inspiring scenery, hundreds of hiking trails and opportunity galore for close up nature photography.   Travelers flock to Western North Carolina for the chance to ride on one of the most famous roadways in the country.  I feel as fortunate to live here today as I did 25 years ago when we moved here. Funny thing is, now that I work in real estate a lot of the names of the overlooks make more sense to me.  Bear Pen Gap, Caney Fork overlook, Woodfin Falls and others used to be just names.  Now I recognize them as the names of the various communities here.  Somehow, that bit of knowledge makes the Blue Ridge Parkway visits even more sp... 08/08/2011

You know I'm just kidding, right?  I'm really not sorry to "hound" you.  When I got back from my daily walk, I let the dogs out...woof..woof..woof..woof..woof.  These hounds are all Jackson County, North Carolina natives.   The three on the right (Wiggles, GiGi and Rambler) are noble yet doofy, goofy, sloppy, noisy and wildly loveable.  There's just something about hounds, sweet beyond measure and not a nasty bone in their incredibly huge food consuming bodies.  For the last eleven years it's been like have a canine comedy act on the the property.  They do not bark constantly, but when they catch the scent of say...a gnat...they will bark for a few seconds and just when I think I will go stark raving full tilt bozo from the sound, they'll break into their dog schtick and it is impossibl... 08/07/2011

The morning started deliciously cool here in Balsam, NC making it easy to greet the day.  The weather inspired me to complete another full day with a lot accomplished. Two sets of buyers, paperwork almost completed for a price change on a contract that's gone almost 4 weeks past settlement date, appointments made for tomorrow and even a little time worked in for "down" time! According to the weather guessers meteorologists hot weather returns tomorrow and will be with us all week.  Not to worry for now though, this evening is ending with a gentle cool rain.  You know what that means...perfect sleeping weather.  Summer is so much easier to handle when occasionally we get this lovely cool climate here in Balsam, NC! What's a "typical" day off like for a real estate agent? Here in Balsam, mine started at 5:55am today.  I actually had the electric blanket on, can you believe it? The open window was letting 55 degee cool breezes in and after the heat wave we've had, the air felt pretty darned delicious. After walking and feeding the dogs, I turned on the computer to check email and AR.  Sitting in the inbox was a notification from our MLS that the last listing we entered last night was marked to "45274(219 Indian Hills Drive WHITTIER) marked to not show for lack of a main view photo."  All I can say is GRRRRRR.  The terse email doesn't say that last night after 15 minutes of entering photos when Leslie clicked on SUBMIT, our MLS system went on the fritz and she lost all her work.  So....anyway, I logg... 07/16/2011

Had a Blazing Hot Time in Balsam, North Carolina today.  Balsam is located about halfway between Waynesville and Sylva off of Hwy 74.  It's a great place to live.  Our elevation is about 3400 feet above sea level, an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway is right around the corner and our temperature in the warmer months is usually 10 degrees cooler than "town".    The town of Balsam is very small and there aren't many businesses. What we do have though, are really good.  The Balsam Mountain Inn is a century old railroad hotel with an award winning restaurant, musical programs and has a constantly changing gallery of local arts.   Moonshine Creek Campground is one of the finest run and most beautiful campgrounds I've ever seen.  This campground features tent camping as it should be...along... 05/22/2011
