Asheville Real Estate Journal and Newsy News Asheville is the incredible place I home-and you can call it home, too. The other day, our dog and I took a walk along the French Broad River.  We were exploring places along the river – land, and homes on the land- that are currently available for you. Close in, such places are priced well. However, a little further out – say 15 or 20 min. from downtown Asheville, you might still find a relative bargain with a view like this- that any kayaker and/or fisher-person might relish.  Let me know if you agree. I think this might be just the place where you can live independently for years to come with a view that changes and inspires you each day. By the way, there's more information on aging in place just below.

Asheville Real Estate JournalBased on feedback from Post50 People, REALTORS®, healthcare professionals, and home builders a team at the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary  is working expeditiously to develop aging-in-place “laneway house” prototypes. In conjunction with the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute for Public Health they  are envisioning, designing, and testing a series of prototypes that can work even in an intergenerational setting. Will one or any number of these be  brought to market? Rendering of a home with alterations geared to Post50 People (AKA “seniors” )Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary  That’s a good question. It is no secret that Asheville, NC has been gaining fame and recognition for the many attractions the area offers. People are moving here from all over the country, mostly as they retire or are wanting a second home. Asheville has been listed on more top ten lists than most cities lately, especially being recognized as the Beer City. But there are many other reasons folks want to live here; mild climate with four distinct seasons, mountains, forests, waterfalls, green and eco-friendly, great hiking, art and entertainment. This has created a strong housing demand, but we have a problem..... affordable land. Since we live in the mountains, level land is not easy to come by and if it is available, it is expensive to purchase. Asheville is now the most expensive (relative to this State) cit...

It would be their “dream place”. And, it was clear to them that they wanted to build something small.  Indeed, their ultimate dream home would be far from huge. Interestingly, this goes along with a concept that is gaining a great deal of popularity  these days. They noted “Boomer” consumer influence and its tremendous buying power today. Real Estate Choices Post50:  Accessory Dwelling Units and Small Home Spaces (Part 1) When Sage and John, a smart couple beginning their Post-50 adventure, decided to create a sanctuary – their “dream place”—  it was clear to them that they wanted to build something small. They were also interested in making their home on a 20 acre parcel not far from Asheville- like this one pictured below.  We were ready, willing and able to help. They had seen an ad in an Asheville journal and were looking at a land and home package for the tidy sum of around $150K. The interior? Just 900 sqft. But there was the option of adding on an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) as well. At some point in the future the idea of continuing on to create a “family compound” might be on the table. So, they explained,  “ W...

Asheville Real Estate JournalNot long ago, I had an interesting conversation with  someone (a Post-50 Person) who is planning for her future.  Here's a snapshot of our discussion..about changes and decision-making.Transitions mean change and many decisions to make. For those who are 50 and older, planning to add universal design elements to feather a nest can not only be wise, but can  make aging-in-place a masterfully-designed adventure. It seems important to plan for  an AT LAST Home  where accessible, universal design allows function and aesthetics to coexist, as in this interior space. AGING IN  A  P A L A C E©   If you are ready, willing, and able  to set a goal for "sustainable excellence"  consider a self-guided tour. Read up on what it takes to start a conversation about and to ...

Asheville, N.C. Real Estate Journal November, 2015 It’s about the well-known factor of supply and demand.LAND- Is it a risky investment for buyers in Asheville, N.C.? Here are a few points to consider.  And remember that old adage, "Location. Location. Asheville Autumn- The Season to Discover LAND and Our Fall Color Tour  As I looked at the photo (above) I took on our ASHEVILLE 2015 Color Tour, one of my favorite passages from John Crowley’s book, Little Big came to mind. If you are looking for land and finding the “right” place , this may be helpful for you as it has been for many of our clients:  “…on brave luminous mornings walking expectant and watchful, waiting to be led and feeling (at once, at the same moment) the turning [you] must take that would lead to a place that took your hand and said, “We’re here….” ~ John Crowley
