When you think about  sustainable agriculture, organic farms, eco-communities and quality of life in Asheville and the towns surrounding this jewel in the North Carolina mountains, you may imagine scenes like this. But this in NOT your imagination. This is real.     Committed to sustainable farming and pasturing methods, the owners of this farm also are receptive to talking with visitors about what it takes to create this environment. This is a serious plus for our clients who more and more are telling us they want to learn about sustainable practices.  In general, here in the Greater Asheville area, whether you live here, are visiting or relocating, you will notice that people enjoy conversations and the accompanying camaraderie about such matters. That, by the way, turned out to be a...

It is safe to say that your approach to walking and hiking mountain land (including some that is for sale and calls to you in and around Beautiful Asheville) will evolve over the years. And, it's also safe to say that walking the mountain land will never cease to inspire and amaze you, as it does our land brokerage team. One look at a scene like this (photo from recent walk on broker-colleague’s land for sale) and you may see what I mean.        Over the years, I must have written at least three volumes about mountain land and acreage here in Asheville. I love the land! For lucky buyers the investment they made in LAND remains strong. Here are just a few of  my notes from the .  Land & Sustainability Series- Asheville, NCThat series gives a big nod to the  idea of  sustainability—pr...

(photo near my home in North Asheville- a walkable neighborhood we love)   Did you happen to see the 2014 report on emerging trends in real estate by The Urban Land Institute ? Interesting! It  reports that, “…baby boomers [desire living accommodations] within walking distance of downtown areas or moving into centers for active seniors. Many people, regardless of age or physical ability, love the idea and experience of working with and/or  simply enjoying the camaraderie of friends and neighbors. This continues to be  desirable- with no age limit-  according to many older adults we speak with. Asheville is noted as a wonderful, wonderful place if you are considering relocation in retirement. In fact, here’s my annual reminder  about the Creative Retirement Exploration Weekendwhere yo...

If you are a resident of Asheville, you may have noticed rapid growth and the accompanying challenges including  habitat loss and a scarcity of affordable farmland. As land specialists, we sure can attest to that.  We were pleased to note that there is conversation happening around that topic. In fact, Sustainable Now will present the Four Futures for Mountain Farmland Symposium with the theme “Rethinking Sustainability and Land Use in the Mountain Area” at Warren Wilson College.     According to organizers, “a diverse group of thought leaders will convene for a day of eye-opening presentations that will help land owners, community leaders, planners, farmers and neighborhoods think through land use in a new way. " Learn more  We’ll look at questions like, What is sustainable land use? H...

It's early morning and a good time to practice the " art " of scouting the valleys and the mountains only discovered by navigating the curving roads that lead there. Today is full of unexpected possibilities as you will see in my one-minute video here. I'd like to mention that ...as an Asheville LAND BROKER... this is *exactly* what gets my heart pumping, happily. AND..if you are a Post50 person this could be a place to create a feathered nest in which to enjoy "staying power" where a trip up a gentle incline reveals a parcel just minutes from the cultural delights of downtown ... .  **Asheville NC Land For Sale- Land Brokers Find Nice ACRES **

Black bears around the mountainside in Asheville, N.C. take long naps, then wake up  a little hungry and grumpy this time of year, right?   Yes. Right! You can see new mothers and their wee cubs along the wildlife path next to an organic farm within miles of Asheville's city limits.  I'm sure you don't need me to remind you. . . Do NOT get close or feed them.  Don't hang out taking snapshots when the cubs are playing by the dumpsters. And that’s NO April Fool's joke! Genus Ursus the black bears around this neck ‘o the woods live in close proximity to human beings. It's an opportunity to learn an important lesson in coexistence. And that lesson can be brought home, unexpectedly.   In fact,  while out taking photos of the brilliant green moss I almost stumbled upon this black bear (see ph...

I'm always interested in information about Green Enterprise and/or Living Sustainably, and so am a fan  of Kaid Benfield's Blog. Today in his on-going discussion of affordable, housing, neighborhoods, revitalization, and smartgrowth he took on "The thorny matter of gentrification...the messy phenomenon that occurs if longtime residents of older neighborhoods find themselves priced out of their own communities as those neighborhoods become more sought-after and valuable. "      He pointed out the conumdrum: Current residents feeling squeezed out when " long-timers ... fear losing control of their neighborhoods and, in too many cases, their very homes as rents and property taxes go up with increased value brought on by increased demand.  But, on the other hand, the environmental, fiscal an...

A headline in the real estate section of the Washington Post   caught my eye this morning. It read," ‘Aging-in-place’ features for the home gain higher profile as baby boomers get older. Real Estate Market Trends- Boomers Aging-in-Place " According to the article, the new home of a "boomer" couple was " built to accommodate couple as they age" and  included a few features I've been highlighting in the Active Rain series (you can read the entire Active Rain series in the Aging-in-Place Group) - — including an elevator, wide doorways to accommodate a wheelchair and a flat, no-step entryway. Planning a Place ot Live Any number of our colleagues over at The Sage Companion Project have been focused on the wisdom of planning a place to live. Just like a large segment of the country in 2013 the Asheville real estate market showed signs of stabilization. 2013 returned to a more "normal" market for Asheville real estate. 2014 has started off slower than 2013, but may argue the colder than normal weather may be the cause, but my guess is, we will have a steady but not above average year as far as sales goes. Asheville remains an extremely popular area and as a result buyers come from all over the country (and world) to have a home here and as a result our housing prices are the highest in the state.
