A new nature path for Chesterfield, MO   A new nature path has been opened in Chesterfield, MO.  Chesterfield, known for it’s extensive parks and trails has added another new trail in the heart of the city.  Known as Riparian Trail, the new trail is a 10-foot-wide path made of crushed stone similar to the St. Louis area’s Katy Trail and is currently a half mile long. A riparian trail is a trail that follows along a stream or waterway. Visitors to the path have reported encountering deer and other wildlife.  Carefully placed boardwalks guide users through the natural surroundings and lush landscaping.    While Phase 1 has just opened, the trail will be extended to include future connection to the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center and on to Old Chesterfield Road.  Eventually, the trail w...

Chesterfield, MO road work improvements are being scheduled for the intersection of Long Road, Wild Horse Creek Road and Kehrs Mill Road.  Having been a complicated and troublesome intersection, the long awaited improvements are finally on the way.  When completed, Chesterfield residents will notice a significant improvement.  However, during the 2 year process, driving through the area will be difficult.  Road closures are planned for both Wild Horse Creek and Kehrs Mill Road which will really snarl traffic.  Already, the short 70 day closure of Baxter Road at Edison has caused long backups on both Wild Horse Creek and Long Roads, especially during rush hour in the evening.  For this project to be completed, complicated improvements will need to be made. This includes replacement of th...

Chesterfield, MO Aquatic Center goes to the dogs!  Tonite, the Chesterfield, MO Aquatic Center Park was turned over to the dogs.  The annual dog swim was held tonite at the Aquatic Park.  Limited to Chesterfield citizens and their canine friends, the dog swim ran from 4:30 PM until 7 PM.  We arrived around 5:15 PM and the party was in full swing.  Despite the fact that this event has been held for several years, this was our first time.  Our dogs were very excited about the prospect of a dog party.  Staff and volunteers running the event were a well oiled machine.  Several people were registering the dogs and their owners.  Evidence of vaccination records was needed as well as registration showing proof of residency.  After a brief registration, we proceeded to the check-in desk where w...

Today was the Opening Day for general use of the Eberwein Dog Park in Chesterfield, MO.   While opening ceremonies were held yesterday with city officials and invited guests, today was the first day that Chesterfield citizens were allowed to use the park.  Despite the opening day being delayed a month, Chesterfield, MO citizens have warmly embraced the idea of the dog park.  We went to city hall last week to register and get registration tags for our dogs.  They were out!!  That is good news actually!  That means that many residents have chosen to register their dogs and plan to use the park.  We couldn’t resist going to the park today to be part of the inaugural day.   Our dogs have never been to a dog park before.  Both have been to doggie daycare so they have been socialized with oth...

Barat Academy announces move to Chesterfield, MO   It is a new school year and Barat Academy, a private Catholic high school, has moved to a new location in Chesterfield from Dardenne Prairie, MO.  The move stems from financial difficulties that occurred when the school’s mortgage holder failed and the FDIC stepped in taking control of the lender’s assets.  Unsuccessful negotiations with the new lenders - the FDIC and Enterprise Bank, forced an eviction from the school building this summer.  Despite attempts to keep the school in St. Charles County, the newer school, only open since 2007, was unable to find appropriate accommodations.  The school identified a property formerly occupied by Gateway Academy located on Wild Horse Creek Road in Chesterfield as ...

We wanted to update you about the cicada activity in St. Louis..... It is significantly improved. We are seeing more and more dead insects on the ground so their total demise is imminent. The noise levels have dropped significantly as well. We attended an outdoor concert tonite and we were afraid that the cicadas would interrupt our enjoyment, but alas, it was cicada free. We should be cicada free until 2015 when the 17 year cicadas emerge. Can't wait.

A few days ago, I wrote about our oncoming winter storm that was being called a possible blizzard.  It has been a while since Missouri had a blizzard.  Well, I wrote that I was excited about the upcoming storm because I had a new snow blower.  Jim was worried after we bought it that we wouldn’t get any more snow for the season and it would sit in our garage, shiny and new (and untouched.) WELL, I am happy to report that while we did not get the monster snowfall that had been predicted, we did get enough sleet and snow to warrant firing up my new toy.  Jim was so excited that I got to use it that he took some pictures of me in action.  Just wanted to share them with you.                    The ski goggles came in extra handy!  Winter isn't over yet.  I am hoping for another snow day!

I know that it is only the end of January and winter is not over.  One can always hope for a mild Missouri winter.  Well, this one is destined for the record books.  We heard the weather forecast today for the next 3 days and they are referring to the upcoming storm as a storm of “epic,” “historic” and “record setting” proportions.  I have to say that I am especially happy about it because I get an “I told you so” out of it.  During the last storm just a few weeks ago, our snow blower quit working.  Carburator problem was the diagnosis.  Shortly after, a new storm was headed our way – 3-6 inches were predicted.  Jim had back surgery recently and is unable to shovel snow, so I was able to finagle a new snow blower.  I was sure hoping it was going to snow.  We got the new snow blower home...

Chesterfield, Missouri is certainly not known for it’s mountain lions but one was spotted the other day in a suburban subdivision in Chesterfield.  Just blocks from an elementary school and just a few hundred feet from homes, the solitary mountain lion about 28” tall was spotted on video captured by an area resident.  The resident was shocked to discover that what he originally thought was a deer turned out to be a mountain lion.

Smoke House Market and Annie Gunn’s are landmarks in the Chesterfield Valley, Chesterfield, Missouri.   Rich in history, the Smoke House originally opened in 1937 as the Chesterfield Mercantile Company.  For over 68 years, the market has offered a wide variety of meats, cheeses, condiments and organic produce.  Stepping across the threshold of well worn wood floors, one feels as if they have taken a step back in time.  A pig greets you at the door.  Just the glorious smells upon entry are enough to bring you back time and time again.  The narrow aisles are filled with shelves just loaded with specialty items not found anywhere else in the St. Louis area.  You can find imported cheeses and candy, unique food gifts as well as specialty beverages.  The full service gourmet meat market ...

Recently, Chesterfield, Missouri Interim Mayor Barry Flachsbart was interviewed about his thoughts reflecting on 2010 and the future for the city of Chesterfield.  Here were his thoughts:   Main accomplishment in 2010: Maintained city services at the same high level, even in the light of significantly adverse financial challenges. Along with this has been the accomplishment of positioning ourselves for the future. We are going into 2011 with a balanced budget and no cutbacks in services. Biggest challenge in 2010: Clearly, the financial issues. But the staff and the city council, especially the members of the Finance and Administration Committee of the council, our city administrator, and our director of finance and administration, have worked tirelessly to stay “on top” of the changing...
