Sherburne County Veterans Service Office staff saw growth this summer in the numbers of men and women who served the United States from World War II through current conflicts, and who are now turning to the county office for guidance on obtaining any benefits — medical or financial — that may be rightfully theirs.   The staff welcomed 195 veterans for first-time visits to the Sherburne County Government Center office in Elk River from June through August this year, which was up nearly 55 percent from the 126 veterans who made first visits to the office during those months in 2011. Wild West Days Are Coming to Zimmerman Minnesota This Weekend! This is just a teaser…..Wild West Days are roaring into Zimmerman next week from Thursday, May 24 through Monday, May 28, 2012. In the Fall of 1970, a small group of Zimmerman residents decided to create a fund-raising community group with the expressed purpose of providing community aid, ranging from projects from helping the local Volunteer Fire Department to providing help for families in need. Their ultimate goal was to purchase a piece of land and erect a community building on it. This group became known as the Zimmerman Civic Club (ZCC). Former Zimmerman BMX biker, James Rienstra, will begin his long haul from Zimmerman, Minnesota  to Anchorage, Alaska a 3,300-mile bicycle trek on Friday, May 20. He is doing this for charity and the money raised will go to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund because of Shaver's cancer struggles and because Rienstra wants the money to stay in Minnesota.  He is honoring his father who died of pancreatic cancer five years ago.   He hopes to raise at least $10,000 and much, much more.    Monies are already coming in via his personal blog at http://minnesota2alaska.blogspot.com/ James says he will not see any of the money that is raised through his blog, which utilizes the Razoo application. It was just a week ago that Zimmerman High School held its Prom.  You remember Prom, right.  Good or bad, it was exciting.   The students had a nasty night to be dressed in their finest, and I am sure that a few hairdos were not what the girls had planned, but there was an array of finery as the students each got a turn to show off at the Grand March on a real red carpet.  And there were even a few top hats. The gymasium was decorated as Casiono Royale.  Imagine working so hard to get the sports facility transformed into an elegant space as a luxe hotel lobby.  Eighteen people spent 18 hours transforming the gym.  After the Grand March,  students made their way to Northern Lights Ballroom and Banquet Center in Pease for fine dining and to dance the night away. Take your horse camping - Sand Dunes Horse Camp on Lake Ann in Sand Dunes State Forest Sand Dunes State Forest is located in Sherburne County Orrock Township Minnesota nestled into the east side of the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. The land here was originally virgin prairie and when the pioneers settled the area they began to farm the land. The crops that were farmed were oats, rye, wheat, barley, potatoes and hay. The effects of the dust bowl drought during 1933 and 1934 brought an end to most of the farming in the Sand Dunes area. During 1941 concerned citizens began experimental tree planting at Sand Dunes to control the drifting sands. Hardwoods and conifers were planted along with several other species during this time. Here are some quick states on what is happening on homes listed in Zimmerman, MN.Currently there are 182 active listings.
