Fourteen-Screen Multiplex Headed to Outlet Mall January 7, 2014 By Luke Haase   Owners of Traverse City’s outlet mall and Carmike Cinemas confirm to The Ticker that a new, 14-screen multiplex will be proposed to Garfield Township officials later this week, ending months of speculation about what tenant might end up there. The proposed new theatre would be a presumed anchor in the redevelopment of the entire center located on US-31 South. The theatre will be built on the site now housing Old Navy, Dance Arts Academy, and a few other stores. That section and one-third of the “middle” section of the outlet center will be demolished to make way for the new, 60,000 square foot facility. The center as currently configured includes 154,000 total square feet of retail space. The center is owne...

Meet Your New City Website January 6, 2014 By Beth Milligan   Traverse City leaders are unveiling a new official city website at tonight's commission meeting – part of an ongoing effort to better engage residents through user-friendly technology. The overhauled website – which goes live today – is the result of a three-month redesign process by the Land Information Access Association (LIAA). City Manager Jered Ottenwess says commissioners and staff raised questions about revising the city's 5-year-old website when he arrived in office in July, frustrated with the site's disorganized navigation, limited search functionality and stale aesthetic.“Anytime you have a website for that long, it's important to think about whether it's still efficient or if it needs to be freshened up,” Ottenwe...

By Beth Milligan   In the aftermath of the failure of two bond proposals for Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) in November, district officials are now faced with the difficult task of determining where and how in the budget the $48 million shortfall will be reconciled in 2014 – and beyond. TCAPS board member Megan Crandall serves on the district's finance and operations committee and is reviewing scenarios with that group. The most obvious option – submitting another presumably revised bond proposal again next year – is one Crandall says she would have “a hard time justifying” after back-to-back failures.“There would have to be a change in the community, a change in sentiment, for me to be comfortable going forward with another bond proposal,” she says. TCAPS must also put an 1...

TCAPS Ponders Schedule Switch December 9, 2013 By Beth Milligan   Five years after switching to a trimester high school schedule to accommodate changing statewide graduation requirements, Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) officials tonight will consider converting to a four-quarter system in the 2014-2015 school year.“There are a number of data-based reasons the district decided to propose the change,” says Traverse City Central High School Principal Rick Vandermolen, of the recommendation up for discussion at tonight's Board of Education meeting. Staff and administrators at both high schools – along with TCAPS' Curriculum and Finance/Operations committees – have already reviewed and issued support for the measure, which they say will save the district money and provide a more ...

November 11, 2013 By Beth Milligan   A Flint-based developer with a controversial project history has purchased the 167,605 square-foot Cherryland Center on South Airport Road in Traverse City – raising questions about the future of the property. V. Kumar Vemulapalli, owner of Durga LLC, purchased the shopping mall in an online auction on September 11. Sources familiar with the auction say the winning bid was “close to or above” $3.1 million. The minimum starting bid was $1.25 million. Vemulapalli, who otherwise declined to comment for this story, tells The Ticker he has hired real estate and marketing consultants to help “develop a plan” for the Cherryland Center, which has been in receivership since 2010 after previous owner Schostak Bros. defaulted on a mortgage to Wells Fargo Bank....

November 1, 2013 By Lynn Geiger   Anyone who has headed out the Old Mission Peninsula recently can’t help but notice the piles of dirt and earth-moving equipment about 3 miles up Center Road. That construction zone is site preparation and roadwork for the new Villa Mari Vineyard & Winery, slated to open fall 2014. The peninsula’s latest winery project is headed up by local entrepreneur Marty Lagina, who submitted the official site plans to Peninsula Township this week. There are currently nine acres of mature grapes growing on the approximately 26-acre parcel where the winery will be built at 8175 Center Road between Black Star Farms and Peninsula Cellars. Lagina plans to plant another 10 acres there, which will join the 50 acres of mature vineyards he has elsewhere around the peninsul...
