Merchants on mission to make downtown Oxford more walkable. Between the deafening noise and speeding traffic, downtown Oxford isn't exactly the most inviting place to take a leisurely stroll while doing some window shopping. The mission is to change all that and make downtown a safer, friendlier place for folks who aren't traveling via motorized vehicle. Complete Streets policies aim to ensure that when engineers and planners design or renovate roadways, they do so to accommodate all users, not just motorists. These other users include pedestrians of all ages, bicyclists and people with disabilities. On 08/01/2010, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a pair of Complete Streets bills into law. These laws mean the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is now required to consider all road...

Achatz Homemade Pie Company with locations that include Oxford Michigan madeBon Appetit's "the Hot 10 Best Places for Pie" in the October 2010 issue. According to the article, judges at the National Pie Championships awarded the Cherry pie and Michigan Four Berry pie top honors. Personally my favorite is their coconut cream pie, though all their cheese cakes are excellent. My mom prefers their Cherry pie, and the Michigan Four Berry pie seems to be popular with most people I know. Achatz uses mostly Michigan products such as Michigan sugar, fruits, flour, milk and butter. Their food is natural and most importantly extremely tasty. They are closed on Saturdays but open on Sundays. You can find them at the north end of downtown Oxford on the east side of M-24. 40 N. Washington, Oxford MI,...

For those who truly need it, free food is always a Godsend, especially in these tough economic times. Knowing this, the New Beginnings Baptist Church, located on N. Lapeer Rd. on the Oxford / Orion border, held a grocery giveaway on Saturday. Folks were able to stop by the church and grab enough free food to feed themselves and their families. The selection included 9 tables full of assorted nonperishable food items, 1 table piled high with bread and another table overflowing with fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. The church received the donated food on Wednesday, which was perfect timing in light of all the people who probably lost food when the power went out due to Thursday's big storm. The grocery giveaway isn't just a 1 time thing. The church is hoping to do ...

From the classic cheeseburger with all of the fixings to a steakburger topped with mushrooms and swiss, the classic round patty of meat known as the hamburger is one of the most versatile options on a menu. And starting next May, downtown Oxford will hold a weekend festival geared toward celebrating the hamburger. The Hamburger festival will be the unofficial kickoff to the warm weather season. It will be the weekend after Mother's Day and there will be a carnival, live entertainment, a beer tent. food and all kinds of things. Seattle coffee house leaving Oxford by month's end. Coffee lovers better hurry and stop in to Starbuck's Coffee to get their last frappachino before the store closes it's doors for good in a few weeks. In a sign posted in the lobby, Starbucks is informing their customers that the store will close on Sunday, August 22. The Seattle, Washington based company has been a mainstay in downtown Oxford for the past 11 years in the Oxford Professional Center, located at 51 S. Washington St. Before the company closes their doors on August 22nd, they will be holding a Customer Appreciation Day from 1-5 pm. An e-mail from a Starbucks company spokesperson indicated the closing was due in part to several criteria used in identifying stores for closure. The 2,257 square foot area that Starbucks current...

The Village of Oxford's oldest resident died last week. It's estimated this grand old gentleman resided on Park St. for approximately 150 years, maybe more. He was definitely here before the village was incorporated in 1876. During his lifetime, he provided a sturdy home for creatures ranging from ducks to squirrels. For many years, local school children visited him for lessons in math, science and history. In the summer, he helped cool the neighborhood with shade. In the fall, he displayed a spectacular array of colors. Though he slumbered all winter long, he never failed to wake up in time to let everyone know when spring had arrived. Unfortunately, time finally caught up with this massive silver maple tree as sections of it became rotted and hollow, making it a hazard to both people ...
