Yesterday, my wife and I visited downtown Howell, Michigan.  Our main reason was to get to the last of the Howell Winter Marketplaces - the indoor winter version of the Howell Farmers Market at the Howell Opera House.  Next Sunday, by the way, is the 2015 inaugural Howell Farmers Market adjacent to the Historic Livingston County Courthouse.I bumped into a friend who has a small farm and was selling items there (previously unknown to me), and because it was a good, sunny, 'walking' day, we checked out some other shops.  We stopped in at Mom & Pop's Bakery, but since we had eaten breakfast just before our visit, we didn't sample anything.  (Note to self: Next time, go hungry.)A new pub just opened, 2FOGs, which stands for 2 Friendly Old Guys.  It's in the basement of a storefront on Grand...

There's plenty to do at the Howell Opera House this weekend.  Today, beginning at 6pm is 'Opera Art Live', an evening of Hor d'oevres, cocktails and observing 30 artists creating ART LIVE on site.  Silent auctions of that art and an artist afterglow will conclude the evening.  Admission $12 in advance or $15 at the door.  Proceeds will go towards art programs at the Opera House.  Go home, get a good night's sleep, then come back at 10am on Sunday for the last Howell Winter Market. This every-other-Sunday event takes up the slack left by the absence of the summer Howell Farmer's Market.  Billed as a family oriented marketplace, there are arts and crafts, baked goods, and other small production food items.  No admission fee.image courtesy Bob Smith

Here’s some exciting news!  Livingston County is planning its first ever airshow.  Crosswinds Aviation and the Livingston County Airport are working together to make this happen.  The date is set for Saturday June 27, 2015.  And this will be an exciting weekend in Howell. Also on tap this weekend is the Michigan Challenge BalloonFest, just down the street at Howell High School.  And of course, on Sundays the Howell Farmer’s Market is in downtown Howell, next to the Historic Livingston County Courthouse, so there will be plenty to do.   You can check out the Balloonfest at their web site, but the Airshow’s site is under construction as of this posting. image courtesy of luigi diamanti/freedigitalphotos.net

As I was taking picutures for a future blog post on the Brownstone Condos for sale next to Banker's Square, I turned around to see where the sun in the sky was and saw it shining on the old Howell Mi Depot, a museum operated by the Howell Area Historical Society and it brought on some childhood memory flashbacks. Growing up in Howell Mi, I was familar with trains and the tracks that ran behind our house about a block away.   So I went over and walked around the old depot, it looked better than I remembered. It has been a long time. I have memories of when it was a steam world, before the  Desiel Streamliners would come and take over but my memories  were  about steam, Here a few of them.                       THE SOUNDS OF A TRAIN AT NIGHTMy family moved to North Street,  second house w...

The Howell Farmers’ Market will open May 4, 2014.  On this second most important ‘opening day’ (after that of the Detroit Tigers, of course), there will be horse-drawn wagon rides along with the crafts, herbs, baked goods and garden plants – all from local vendors. The Farmers’ Market is located adjacent to the Historic Livingston County Courthouse, generally the area around State and Clinton Streets in downtown.  Visit from 9am to 2 pm every Sunday from May 4th through the end of October.  Market goods shift along with the harvest, but there’s always something good there.   While in town, check out the renovated War Memorial (corner of Grand River and State), take a walk down to the Heart of Michigan store on Grand River near Walnut, get some interesting pictures of the Opera House (st...

Howell Michigan  is my hometown !Summer in my hometown, Howell Mi is so much fun and a great place to find a home, The old courthouse lawn is the scene of concerts in summer with people bringing their own chairs, blankets or just sitting on the grass. Parades usually pass by the reviewing stand brought in on a flatbed trailer, festivals spread out on this generous setting where people gather and celebrate. Farmers bring their produce on summer Sundays along State street. People stroll, kids and dogs play and people chat and meet old and new friends. You can start in June with the Michigan Hot Air Balloonfest, The Howell Melonfest, or, if you like cold weather at night try the the fabulous Festival of Lights Night Parade. Howell is a Great place to live. So besides having great events, H...

Howell Condo Numbers Are Growing as contractors begin to roll out new units, some the first since the market began its decline a few years ago.  And, there is a nice mix of newer and older units coming onto the local real estate market.  Currently numbers of units available in the Howell Area are greater than anywhere else in the county. Price ranges cover the upper $70's to the mid $200 range of values.  Two and Three bedroom, 2 bath units start in the lower 100's. Why Howell and why a Condo?  Howell is located midway between East Lansing (MSU) and Ann Arbor (U of M) (EMU) and Howell itself is home to Cleary University. Howell is about an hour's drive to reach nearly 2/3 of Michigan's poplulation.  Still a little bit country and a lot local, Howell is a mecca of opportunity from dining...
