Produced in association with Major League Baseball (MLB, the oldest professional sports league in the USA), narrated by lifelong baseball lover Kevin Costner, and interviews with great players, scientists and historians, this film tries to discover who is the fastest pitcher ever.  This is a new film that opened nationally on March 25th, and it comes to Downtown Howell just a month later.  It is playing Apr 26 – May 1.Take the opportunity to see this production in the Historic Howell Theatre in #DowntownHowell.  Leave time before or after the film to shop or dine at some of the great local businesses.  Not familiar with the area?  No problem. My restaurant recommendations include Diamond’s Steakhouse, 2FOG’s speakeasy-style pub, Moe’s Bar Bar Shop (a bar with good food that also has an a...

Yesterday, my wife and I visited downtown Howell, Michigan.  Our main reason was to get to the last of the Howell Winter Marketplaces - the indoor winter version of the Howell Farmers Market at the Howell Opera House.  Next Sunday, by the way, is the 2015 inaugural Howell Farmers Market adjacent to the Historic Livingston County Courthouse.I bumped into a friend who has a small farm and was selling items there (previously unknown to me), and because it was a good, sunny, 'walking' day, we checked out some other shops.  We stopped in at Mom & Pop's Bakery, but since we had eaten breakfast just before our visit, we didn't sample anything.  (Note to self: Next time, go hungry.)A new pub just opened, 2FOGs, which stands for 2 Friendly Old Guys.  It's in the basement of a storefront on Grand...

There's plenty to do at the Howell Opera House this weekend.  Today, beginning at 6pm is 'Opera Art Live', an evening of Hor d'oevres, cocktails and observing 30 artists creating ART LIVE on site.  Silent auctions of that art and an artist afterglow will conclude the evening.  Admission $12 in advance or $15 at the door.  Proceeds will go towards art programs at the Opera House.  Go home, get a good night's sleep, then come back at 10am on Sunday for the last Howell Winter Market. This every-other-Sunday event takes up the slack left by the absence of the summer Howell Farmer's Market.  Billed as a family oriented marketplace, there are arts and crafts, baked goods, and other small production food items.  No admission fee.image courtesy Bob Smith

The Howell Farmers’ Market will open May 4, 2014.  On this second most important ‘opening day’ (after that of the Detroit Tigers, of course), there will be horse-drawn wagon rides along with the crafts, herbs, baked goods and garden plants – all from local vendors. The Farmers’ Market is located adjacent to the Historic Livingston County Courthouse, generally the area around State and Clinton Streets in downtown.  Visit from 9am to 2 pm every Sunday from May 4th through the end of October.  Market goods shift along with the harvest, but there’s always something good there.   While in town, check out the renovated War Memorial (corner of Grand River and State), take a walk down to the Heart of Michigan store on Grand River near Walnut, get some interesting pictures of the Opera House (st...

The area Farmers' Markets are closed until Spring 2014, and while that means we’re not going to have fresh local produce, there are still some great options for local shopping. The Howell Winter Marketplace is one of those choices. It is open 2 Sundays a month through April 2014, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Some of the items that will be available are fresh eggs and butter, baked good (including gluten-free products), jewelry, arts and crafts.  A new local coffee shop, Teeko’s, will also be on site to sell coffee.  The Howell Winter Marketplace is at the historic Howell Opera House at 123 W. Grand River, Howell 48843.  The schedule for this season is:  November 3 & 17, December 1 & 8, January 5 & 19,  February 2 & 16, March 2 & 16, April 6 & 13.  For more information, visit the Howell O...
