Bath, ME Real Estate News

Got any junk in the trunk?  How about the attic? Under the bed...stuffed in the shed...in the back of the closet or crammed overhead? Okay...before this turns into a Dr. Seuss rhyme, let me tell you what I'm talking about! Every year Bath, Maine celebrates Mayfair weekend. This celebration offers a variety of activities for young and old, but the biggest draw seems to be the city wide yard sale!  Treasure hunters from surrounding counties descend upon our fair city to check out the goodies, and this year, we're planning to have some goodies of our own to offer! Allen & Selig Realty is asking you to do some spring cleaning, clean out that shed, and bring us your unwanted items!  We will be participating in the city-wide yard sale this year, and all proceeds will benefit the Bath Youth Me...

Regional School Unit #1 (RSU 1) students are launching a Community Garden!  The vegetables they grow will go to the school cafeterias and local food banks. Kicking off the gardening season, community members are invited to attend an Open House at the Bath Middle School Green House, Thursday, April 16, 2009 from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.  Bring gardening gloves and trowels, if you have them, and come help dig the dirt!  There will be opportunities for continued volunteerism throughout the spring and summer, as well. The Community Garden will be located near the corner of Lemont and High Street in Bath - - they have a near half-acre plot, that has never been gardened before, and the Woolwich School 6th Graders have already tested the soil.  A wide array of academic lessons are planned relative t...

UPDATE:  I went to the Friday night performance of the JUBILEE and it was a hoot!  It was just about a full house and I sat and laughed and smiled for 2 hours. There are still performances tonite and tomorrow - - get tix if you can.  The standout of the evening for me was Lauren Crosby singing her original song, "Just Want to Say" accompanied on guitar by Brian Dowd.  Lauren has a beautiful, contemporary, clear-as-a-bell voice - - you can just hear the joy and see it in her sparkiling eyes, too - unbelievably talented.  The other really special moment was late in Act II, Bath's own Codes Enforcement Officer, Scott Davis stepped out of the "Pit Band" and up on stage with his trumpet to croon "It's a Chocolate World", a parody of "It's A Wonderful World" - we've all known that Scot leads ...

EVERYONE'S IRISH ON ST. PATRICK'S DAY! Bath, Maine - Saturday, March 14, 2009 Bath’s first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held under clear, sunny skies this past Saturday – the kind of gorgeous day that reassured us all that spring really would come this year.  The parade was organized by Main Street Bath, and sponsored by one of Bath’s most Irish, Joe Byrnes, Owner of Byrnes Irish Pub on Centre Street.  Joe had a huge hand in planning and organizing this parade, the first of what will surely become a much-anticipated annual event.  Everyone came, decked out in their green, to watch the parade led by a sole piper.  Other parade entrants included color guards, the “Pub Scout” Band, kazoo players led by Joe himself, green vehicles of all sorts, and fire departments from Bath and neighbori...

The Bath Maine residential home markets saw 9 transactions take place with a median sold price of 95K and a median days on market of 69 in February 2009. This contrasts with 3 homes sold at a median price of 120K after sitting on the market for 129 days in February 2009.  In November, December and January combined only 11 homes sold thus representing a strong month in the mid coastal Maine community.    Inventories rose slightly from 100 to 103 compared with the month prior.   There are so many great things about living and working in a close-knit community like Bath.  One of those really great things is that we take care of our kids, not only by having wonderful schools with caring administrators, teachers, staff and volunteers, but by providing families with a whole array of recreational activities that give our kids alternatives to television, video games, and the mischief that boredom can create, by encouraging them to become  involved in sports, hobbies and activities, getting them outdoors, and interested in all that our community and our world has to offer.    One local program that offers some interesting and fun options is “Adventures at Huse.”  This program is an effort of the Sagadahoc Community Justice Project, in partnership with Regional Scho...

Bath Maine real estate had a very slow January with only 2 transactions taking place at an average sold price of 137K compared with 3 transactions a year prior at an average price of 141K.  Pricing thus dropped on average 4% but given the extremely small sample size it is hard to discern any clear trend.  The inventory of property dropped slightly in January to 100 from 105.     To get more information on this Maine coastal real estate market please visit www.mymaineproperty.com, contact me directly at 207-650-5383 or via email at john@greentreemaine.com

Sometimes, it can be difficult for people who have never visited Maine to understand the appeal of our craggy shores, especially this time of year when we are most likely under a blanket of snow and frigid winds blow through the tree tops.  It is a beautiful, simple way to live - - I found this video that gives you a very small glimpse into the the little corner of the world that I love; if you watch carefully, you will see Bath's Maine Maritime Museum and Library Park among the scenes depicted in this video. PLEASE ENJOY:    "A Window On The Coast"

Bath Maine real estate remains quiet with 4 transactions transpiring in December 08 with an average sold price of 143K. Comparing this to 5 transactions at an average price of 171K in December 2007 one can see a price drop of 16% year over year. With an inventory of 105 properties the Bath Maine residential real estate market remains quiet and will most likely continue this way for the foreseeable future. Long before Global Warming, $4.00 heating oil and, yes even before gas-guzzling SUV's, the household I grew up in was quite Green-oriented and intensely focused on the efficient use of energy; suffice it to say, we were way ahead of our time.  But, before you go thinking that my father must have been a genius, some sort of soothsayer, or the original tree-hugger,  let me set that straight - - he and my mother were both raised during the Great Depression so, even though we never went without, we didn't buy anything we didn't need and we certainly didn't waste what we had.  The energy policy in our house back then may require some translation in this day and age.  Most of my father's policies started with the words, "What's the matter with you?"  As in "What's the matter with you, the ho...

Bath Maine real estate markets saw 5 transactions occur with an average sold price of 112K after sitting on the market for an average of 147 days. Comparing this to November 2007 where 8 properties sold at an average price of 269K representing a transaction volume drop of 38% and a price drop of 58%. No doubt the markets are slow but with the small sample size it is difficult to accurately ascertain the exact decreases. The Bath Maine Real Estate residential markets in the month ending October 31st 2008 saw 10 transactions take place including both single family and condo sales. The average sold price was 137K which was 17% off of a year priors average sales price of 166K and down 9% month over month from September. In October 2007 11 transactions transpired and thus Bath Maine housing volume remained flat year over year but given the small sample size, % flucuations will be large.  This report is brought to you by John Herrigel, a coastal maine real estate agent serving the greater Portland and lower mid coast regions of the state.

Happy 4th of July all and as I return from a 7 month sailing excursion www.caribbeanendeavour.com I find myself re-enthused to enter the world of blogging.   This past weekend Bath Maine hosted their annual 4th of July Heritage Days extravaganza.  "What a town" I always find myself saying during this weekend.  The street side vendors, the 5 mile road race, fireworks, live music, it has it all.   I wish I had some pictures to provide but take a look at the large and all encompassing photo gallery from www.visitBath.com here. For a Maine mid coast town less than 45 minutes to Portland... the real estate is affordable, the quality of life is high!!

Well folks, it's that's time of year again.  Just when it's getting light early enough for me to stumble my way to the coffeepot without finding the light-switch, daylight savings time rears it's ugly head. So I guess I'll be setting my clocks back an hour on Saturday night.  But, looking on the bright side, that means spring is on it's way.  Really..it will get here.  In celebration of the coming Spring , the town of Bath is holding a special event on Friday, March 21st from 6pm-9pm. Under the light of a full moon, Main Street in Bath will come alive with live music, various street performers, excellent food, and wandering astronomers! The wandering astronomers will be prowling the streets to give shoppers, children, and anyone who's interested a peek at the Universe!  More than 20 st...

The Mid-Coast Region of Maine is known all over the world for windjammer cruises, lobster bakes, and lighthouses. What is less well-known about the area is that there are a number of beautiful lakes and ponds which give freshwater lovers great places to boat, fish, and swim while providing easy access to coastal attractions. This region runs along the coast from Freeport to Belfast and includes the towns of Brunswick, Bath, Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta, Rockland, and Camden - all towns synonymous with the Maine coast. A few miles inland from all these coastal towns sit freshwater lakes and ponds offering a variety of lakefront and lake access home and land listings. Old Indian names are not lost on bodies of water here. All within close proximity to the coast are lakes or pon...

5 REASONS NOT TO WITHDRAW YOUR HOUSE FROM THE MARKET FOR THE WINTER Provided by Sam Armentrout, A Southern Maine Real Estate Agent at CHR Realty/ GMAC Real Estate 5.) KEEP THE PICTURE CLEAR Local brokers play a crucial role in selling each other's listings. Temporary withdrawl of a property will remove it from the forefront of brokers minds; many brokers will assume that your home has either sold or that the sellers changed their minds about moving. 4.) IT JUST TAKES 1 While home sales may dip 45-50% between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's important to remember that a sucessful sale only takes 1 buyer. Withdrawing a home for the winter may result in the same outcome as keeping it on during the holidays, but winter marketing at least leaves the opportunity for a sale, while withdrawl e...
