Seven Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Your First Home You want to buy a home and you’re on the right track by doing your homework online.  There are, however, some things you may not find out about just buy picking a great house.  Here is Mistake #2 of 7 Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Your First Home. Mistake #2 – Not Getting Pre-Approved There is a difference between being pre-qualified and pre-approved.  Pre-qualification is a way to find out approximately how much home you can afford based upon information you provide a mortgage lender.  None of the information provided is verified.  It is strictly a non-binding evaluation to determine how much credit may be extended to you in order to purchase a home. On the other hand, pre-approval means that you have actually completed an application...

A new nonprofit organization is taking shape in Silver Spring, and it's bringing together residents, businesses and county officials, says Gazette.net.  The purpose of this nonprofit called Silver Spring Green is to make the city's downtown area greener and to reach out to both businesses and residents to help with the cause of sustainable living. Currently it's a very grass roots effort that's getting much positive feedback from all who've gotten involved. This effort is similar to a program in Bethesda called Bethesda Green, but the Silver Spring group wants to put their city's own unique mark on the project, emphasizing what's most important for them. Five local companies contributed the founding board members for Silver Spring Green: Impact Silver Spring, Capital One Bank, Clean Cur...

Students in Silver Spring are learning how to dish some dirt--literally.  St. Francis International School has a working garden that's tended by the students, and it's helping to teach them many different lessons according to an article on the Gazette web site. The planting of seeds and tending to the growing flowers and vegetables are what get students interested.  From there, teachers tie in lessons such as why early civilizations sprang up near waterways. In deciding what to grow and sell to raise funds for a class trip, the eighth grade is learning math and economics. And of course there will be instruction in how to prepare wonderful dishes with the food they've grown. Currently the garden consists of eight beds that are four feet by four feet as well as some edible fruit trees and...

This backyard backs to an alley in the McNeill's neighborhood of Silver Spring,   It was a cool thing to watch this small back yard space transfomed into such an abundant oasis, in a neighborhood that is just 2 blocks from the Downtown Silver Spring CBD.  This was really a bare small backyard just a few years ago.  Every inch of space has been used cleverly, (even part of the alley) for the landscape and plantings.  Even though there is a lot of space used for gardening, there is still a driveway to the garage and a large gazebo used for outdoor dining and fun. It is still early in the growing season and I love watching Edamarie's garden grow, fill in and florish through the spring, summer and into fall for the past couple years. Backyard Bounty is a local Silver Spring  Business that d...
