I'm sure many of you, including myself, have noticed the Solar Farm in Hughesville and wondered more about it. Well, I did some research and this is what I found. The Solar Farm is owned by Southern Maryland Electrical Cooperative (SMECO) and went live back in November 2012. The solar panels convert sunlight into direct current, which is carried underground to power inverters, which turn the current into the power used for homes and businesses. SMECO Solar Farm Numbers - 1,078 fixed arrays (racks) holding 22 solar panels each- These cover 33 acres of the 47 acre site- The panels have a lifespan of 25 years and can withstand winds up to 120 mph   How is the SMECO Solar Farm helping? Every Wednesday night, The Boot Scooters of Southern Maryland offer FREE beginner line dancing lessons. I went to one a few weeks ago and had a really good time! The woman teaching the lesson went slow and was really helpful on the steps that some people were having trouble with. And if you aren't a huge fan of country music, that's okay, there are line dances to almost any song you can think of! We learned 2 'easy' dances that evening and were invited to stay and watch or participate in more advanced dances afterwards. I have been quite fascinated watching the construction of a  SOLAR FARM in HUGHESVILLE MARYLAND.  As far as I'm concerned Solar panels on individual homes are still a rare sight in Maryland.  To watch the development of this huge project for the capture of SOLAR Energy is a glimpse into the future. First I watched the preparation of the 47 acre site in Hughesville, Charles County, MD, wondering what was going to be built on this piece of real estate.  Then came the installation of the 'racks'or supports, although I didn't know that's what they were.  They cover 33 acres.
