Black History Month in Gaithersburg, Maryland  The City celebrates and honors Black History Month with educational programs, exhibits and an official proclamation. Explore all programs and events here. An official proclamation designating February 2024 as “Black History Month” in the City of Gaithersburg will be presented at the February 5 Mayor and City Council meeting. The public is welcome to attend the meeting at City Hall, watch it live on YouTube or watch it via Zoom by registering here. Accepting the proclamation is Arnetta Quarles, an author, poet, lyricist, local historian and veteran who grew up in Emory Grove, near Gaithersburg. Telephone Scam Warning The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to citizens about a prevalent telephone scam that has been affecting residents in the area.Scammers are making calls, posing as either representatives of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or employees of bonding companies. The fraudulent callers target family members or friends of incarcerated individuals, claiming they need immediate funds to post bail. These scammers often provide payment options through CashApp, Zelle, Venmo, or other money transfer apps. After receiving the funds, they promptly deactivate the account and phone number used for the scam.Authorities advise anyone receiving such calls to ignore them. Free Virtual Six-Week Diabetes Management Program The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Public Health Services, in partnership with the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence, will offer a free community-based Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) beginning Thursday, Feb. 22. The six-week program will be held virtually from 5:30-7:30 p.m. each Thursday.The DSMP was created at Stanford University and is a nationally recognized diabetes prevention and management program. Cicadas To Emerge This Spring In Many States Billions of periodical cicadas from two broods, including a 13-year brood in Maryland, will emerge this spring in a rare, synchronized event that hasn’t happened since 1803. It will be an especially noisy spring in Illinois, with emergences of both the 17-year cicadas in Brood XIII, known as the Northern Illinois Brood, and the 13-year cicadas in Brood XIX, the Great Southern Brood. A tiny bit of southeast Iowa will also see both broods. Brood XIII cicadas also appear in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and a bit of Michigan.
