Volunteers Needed for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance ProgramThe Montgomery County Community Action Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is recruiting volunteers to become IRS-certified VITA tax preparers, schedulers, greeters, interpreters, quality reviewers and site coordinators for the upcoming tax season that runs from January through mid-April. The Internal Revenue Service requires that VITA volunteers be U.S. citizens, legal residents or otherwise reside legally in the U.S.VITA provides free tax help to residents, including ITIN taxpayers, with household incomes of $60,000 or less. ‘Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors’ Program The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking up to 45 Montgomery County high school students to serve as “Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors.” The project-based learning program teaches teens leadership skills, outreach and engagement techniques to address traffic safety needs in their community. Applications are now being accepting. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Nov. 30. Interested public, private and home-schooled high school students can learn about the program and apply here. Installing EV Charging Stations in the Right-of-Way Residents who do not have a driveway or space on their property to create a parking pad may be eligible to install an electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the right-of-way at their property frontage. The Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services is now accepting applications for charging stations and working with residents to see if a charging station would work for them.Several Montgomery County residents have already taken advantage of the program.Applicants must purchase and install charging stations at their own expense, either on their property or at the curb, depending on the site. New Radon Testing Requirements for Montgomery County Landlords Montgomery County Council Members unanimously passed legislation Tuesday that requires landlords to test for radon in single-family and multifamily rental housing countywide. The bill requires testing on ground or below-ground rental units in single-family or multifamily buildings.It also states that action must be taken if a radon test shows a level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or greater, per the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommendations.  Landlords must conduct a radon test before offering a lease to any prospective tenant, and the test must be performed less than three years before the starting date of the lease, according to the bill.
