Vendor Connection Summit, Thursday, April 25The Montgomery County Office of Procurement will host a “Vendor Connection Summit” from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 25, at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Any company or business that is interested in doing business with County Government is encouraged to attend—and they do not have to be companies located in the County. Imputed income from retirement accounts may help seniors qualify for mortgages   Many retired seniors have faced difficulty in qualifying for mortgage financing as they seek to refinance a home or purchase a more suitable retirement residence.  Traditional underwriting requires enough current income to qualify for mortgage financing. Some seniors have turned to reverse mortgage products but they are not suitable for all situations. According to an article by Kenneth R. Kentlands Alleys Paving Project   Now that summer is approaching, Kentlands residents need to be alert for the continuation of paving projects in the community.  The public streets are maintained by the City of Gaithersburg but the alleys are maintained by the Kentlands Citizens Assembly, the home owners association.  The planned improvements will take place in the alleys.  When the work is being done in the alleys access to the garages that open to the alleys will not be available. So, everybody needs to make sure that their automobiles are moved to the public streets on the scheduled dates.  When work was being done last fall, there were delays and schedule changes as well.  So, if there is any uncertainty about the dates, call Randy Fox at the Clubhouse for an update.   This is the o...

First synthetic turf soccer field in Gaithersburg   Gaithersburg’s young soccer players should have a new million dollar soccer field by next spring. Program Open Space, a Maryland initiative, has granted the City of Gaithersburg  75% of the cost of a new synthetic turf soccer field. The estimated cost is in the range of one million dollars.  Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall. The location is Lakelands Park, on Main Street next to the Lakelands Park Middle School. There has been continuous demand for the use of this field and the synthetic turf will assure an outstanding playing field. Business books do not count.  Most of the time, I am able to read a couple of novels each week. Kentlands Community Yard Sale, Saturday June 1   Saturday, June 1 is the date for the Kentlands Annual Community Yard Sale on the Clubhouse lawn. The hours will be from 8 a.m. to noon.  Call 301-948-2071 to reserve a space. This is a very good time to get rid of the extra stuff in the house, basement and garage. Are David Baldacci books on your reading list?   For several years, one of my personal goals has been to read at least one book for pleasure each week.   When we are very busy, it is sometimes necessary to schedule the time we need to spend for relaxation and personal enjoyment.   My wife, Dolores, is an avid reader and always has book recommendations for me. Montgomery County, MD Police Advice:  Yield to Pedestrians!   The police in Montgomery County, Maryland are conducting a number of special enforcement efforts to protect pedestrians.  The unannounced “stings” use officers acting as pedestrians to cross streets in marked crosswalks. Drivers that fail to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks are being issued citations. Dozens of citations are being issued for each location.  The volume of driver violations is not a surprise to pedestrians that constantly fear for the safety of themselves and family members as they cross busy streets on a regular basis. Short sales coded as foreclosures in credit reports   Kenneth R. Harney, in his The Nation’s Housing column, reports that short sales are routinely coded as foreclosures.  “The credit reporting system now in place does not have a separate code that distinguishes a short sale from a foreclosure.” Short sale transactions must be approved by the secured mortgage lenders since the proceeds will not fully satisfy the mortgage loan obligations. Even though the lenders will suffer losses on short sales, the amount of the loss is typically much smaller than the loss in foreclosures. Gaithersburg Book Festival, Saturday, May 18   The fourth annual Gaithersburg Book Festival will be held this Saturday, May 18, 2013.  The location of the event is the grounds of the Gaithersburg City Hall at 31 South Summit Avenue and the hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.   Admission is free. The festival attracted 17,000 visitors in 2012 and attendance is expected to grow to 20,000 this year.  According to an article in The Gaithersburg Gazette, the festival was modeled after the Library of Congress National Book Festival that is held each fall on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
