Commemoration Opportunities in the City of Gaithersburg   When you wish to honor the memory of a friend or family member or to celebrate special moments, take advantage of the opportunity the make Gaithersburg more attractive by adding a tree, a park bench, or sponsoring a seat in a community building. Those of us that walk through the community on a regular basis do enjoy reading the plaques and markers in public places. This is the official notice from the City of Gaithersburg: Leave a lasting legacy for someone you love, or commemorate a special occasion like the birth of a child, a graduation, wedding, anniversary or special achievement. The City of Gaithersburg offers several opportunities to plant trees, install park benches, put name plates on theater seats, or be part of a brick...

Blogging Beverage:  Stockyard Oatmeal Stout   If you have a local Trader Joe's store that sells beer, you will be able to find Stockyard Oatmeal Stout brewed by JosephsBrau Brewing Co. in San Jose, California. This is a creamy stout in the Irish tradition. This is a very good dark beer at a very reasonable price. Give it a try and share your thoughts. PorchDrinking Review There is no commercial purpose for this blog series on Blogging Beverages. This challenge is for purely personal pleasure. By the way, Trader Joe's stores in Montgomery County, Maryland do not sell beer. We visit stores in Virginia.

VERMICELLI AL CAVIALE (Vermicelli with Caviar) Recipe   You do not need to wait until New Year's eve to celebrate with caviar and champagne.  Chef Dolores provided this recipe.     1 pound vermicelli  ( a very thin spaghetti) 1/4 pound of butter, soft 4 ounces caviar Juice of 1/2 lemon Cook vermicelli al dente.  Have a large hot bowl at hand with the soft butter in it. Lift the pasta directly from its boiling pot into the bowl, draining it over its pot before forking it into the bowl.  It must be hot, and it must be al dente.  Have 4 or 6 hot soup bowls ready.  Now mix the caviar into the pasta in its bowl, tossing well with wooden forks. Add the lemon juice and toss again.  Serve immediately in the hot soup bowls. Serves 4  to 6. (I have successfully halved this recipe to serve 2.) Fro...

Give a senior a ride to get a flu shot   Earlier, I posted a blog as a reminder to get your annual flu shot. A senior in your family or your neighborhood may need a ride to get their flu shot. Most of the time, physicians strongly recommend that seniors get annual flu shots. The cost of the shot is covered by Medicare so the expense should not be a concern. However, some seniors lack the necessary transportation.  Even if you decide not to get a flu shot for yourself, please do not pass that recommendation on to others that may be risking their health if they fail to protect themselves from the flu.   Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

It is time to get your annual flu shot!   Some of us are still experiencing hot summer weather and it does not feel like fall or time for flu shots. However, now is the time to avoid waiting in line for your annual flu shot. Dolores and I got our shots at a local CVS Minute Clinic. Convenient, fast service and customer friendly.   Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Book Suggestion: The Edge by Catherine Coulter   On of my summertime novels was The Edge (1999) by Catherine Coulter. This novel is one of the 18 books in her FBI Thriller Series. We picked up this new book at one of our favorite thrift shops to try the author. I enjoyed the book and will add the others to our list to obtain from the library. This novel features FBI agent Ford “Mac” MacDougal as he investigates an incident that involved his sister Jilly running her Porsche off an Oregon cliff. There is plenty of action to maintain your interest. Read a good book this week for your personal enjoyment.     Spring Blossoms in Kentlands IMG 6096 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

The unwanted flower   You probably have not given a lot of thought to the topic of your most unwanted flower. However, in many areas, dandelions are providing a lot of color to suburban lawns and home owners are trying to find a way to eliminate them. Before you dig up your dandelions, take a little time to look closely to enjoy their beauty and maybe even take a photograph or two. Enjoy your lawn care and gardening!      Dandelion, Spring Photowalk, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, MD IMG 5966 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Tree Removal Permits in Gaithersburg   If your late summer or early fall yard clean up plans call for the removal of a tree or two, this blog is for you.  The severe winter weather created an unusually high level of damage to trees and shrubbery. You may wish to remove or replace some trees that are damaged or that now pose a risk during the hurricane season. Please be aware of the requirement to obtain a permit to remove trees within the City of Gaithersburg. This is the Tree Removal notice from the City: To protect and preserve our urban tree canopy, the City of Gaithersburg requires residents to obtain a permit to remove, top or relocate a tree whose trunk is more than 2 inches in diameter when measured 4 inches up from the ground. Once the permit is received, a laminated sign will b...

Seniors & SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)   The National Council on Aging is encouraging all of us to share this information with seniors who may need help with their cost of food. Millions of seniors could benefit if they simply would take advantage of the the benefits of SNAP.  Please share this information with the seniors in your circles of contacts.  September is ‪HungerAction‬ Month. It’s estimated that 4 million seniors are missing out on nearly $4.5 billion in food benefits from SNAP. Why? Many simply don’t know about the program or are confused about how it works.

Photographing Dianthus in Kentlands   I like to take photowalks through Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Frequently, I take photographs of flowers and plants that I am unable to identify. I was attracted to this very small flower by the color and the light. When I asked for help with the identification, ActiveRain blogger Toni Weidman advised me that this is Dianthus.   Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Book Suggestion: The Son by Jo Nesbø   During the summer, I read The Son (2014 translation) by Jo Nesbø. This award winning Norwegian author and musician is best known for his Harry Hole series of crime novels. This is a stand-alone novel and the setting is Oslo. The primary character is Sonny Lofthus, a prison inmate with a serious heroin habit.
