Upcounty Sexual Health and Wellness Clinic OpeningThe Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will begin providing sexual health services at the new Upcounty Sexual Health and Wellness Clinic beginning Monday, Oct. 9. The clinic, located at the Sidney Kramer Upcounty Regional Services Center in Germantown, will offer free and low-cost testing and treatment for sexually-transmitted infections (STI) and HIV infection.The Sidney Kramer Upcounty Regional Services Center is located at 12900 Middlebrook Road in Germantown. New COVID-19 Vaccine Now Available  The new COVID-19 vaccines are now available. The Food and Drug Administration approved a new vaccine and the advisory committee of the Centers for Disease Control recommended that anyone age 6 months and older get vaccinated. The new vaccines are a much closer match to currently circulating variants. They are updated versions of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.The vaccine is scheduled to be distributed to health care providers and pharmacies across the U.S. Insurance companies will pay for vaccinations and shots that will primarily be available through private physicians’ offices and local pharmacies. Gaithersburg Book Festival Poetry ContestThe Gaithersburg Book Festival annual high school poetry contest is now open for submissions. The theme for 2024 is “Envision a Better Future.” The top three poems will be announced at the 2024 Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 18. First, second and third place winners will receive $250, $100 and $50 gift certificates, respectively. Ad Campaign to Reduce Under-21 Alcohol Access and Consumption Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) is launching an ad campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of under-21 alcohol access and consumption. Starting this month, ABS will place public service advertisements on bus shelters and bus taillights to deter under-21 alcohol use and reduce adolescent access to alcohol.The bus shelter ads will be placed near high schools and feature the phrase “under 21 drinking can lead to alcohol addiction.” The Ride On bus taillight ads will be placed on Upper County routes and feature the phrase “60% of kids who drink get their alcohol from family and friends.” Ads will run for six weeks and include a QR code that can be scanned for more information on reducing under-21 alcohol u...
