Last night, my daughter and I went to Old Ellicott City to browse its boutiques and marvel at the beautiful window displays, all decked out in Christmas. It was the perfect place to kick off this Holiday weekend. Ellicott City's Main Street is a favorite of mine, it's just a 15-minute drive from my house, and I am a frequent visitor. It's a great place to shop for unique gifts, meet up with friends and clients, or attend any of their special events throughout the year (Girl's Night Out, Midnight Madness, the Ellicott City music festival, Wizarding weekend... to name a few). It's always a special place to visit, but particularly at Christmas time. This time of the year just adds magic to the old historic buildings... the only thing missing is snow!  Merry Christmas!

I stopped by The Pink Cabbage in Ellicott City, MD for their Holiday open house this past weekend. Such a beautiful store! I've been there many times over the years and have quite a few items throughout my house that I purchased at The Pink Cabbage, from pillows to candlesticks to picture frames. My dining table came from one of their summer funky flea markets. The Pink Cabbage is home in a 1940s colonial on Frederick Road and is a small collective of vendors specializing in shabby chic, antique, and repurposed home decor. There's always a treasure to be found! At this time of the year, every room is so beautifully decorated that you need to walk through at least twice to take it all in. If you are looking for a special gift or to add a little holiday magic to your home, stop by The Pin...

Walking around historic Ellicott City, you'll surely pass by this brick home just off Main Street and next to the Manor Hill Tavern. Ca. 1842, this historic home is known as the Day-O'Neal-French house, named after its first three consecutive residents. John Day bought the land from George Ellicott - one of the three Ellicott brothers who settled the land in the area - for $250. A master stone mason, Day opted to build a brick home, although many of the properties on Ellicott's land were built with stone, brick was a cheaper resource. The Day-O'Neal-French House is a three-story, three-bay by two-bay federal-style structure with a rubble stone foundation, a gable roof with a brick fireplace on each end, a bit less than 1,500 square feet, and three bedrooms. It has a little courtyard out...

''Dear Birchmede Dr., We've lived with you for 23 years. Children grew up and several pet generations called you home during that time. We loved watching the birds out your bay window and the butterfly garden. The fireplace has been a great asset through past winters.  You happily accepted all the games when we gave you a facelift and added all the storage and a window seat in the family room. We love your backyard, especially the wonderful creek that is fun to explore from our yard. We love how close you were to essential shopping and how we used to ride bikes to Music and Arts for music lessons.  We loved working from home at the quirky Tudor bar in your basement. We love all the quiet places to hide with a book to read in peace.  We've loved sharing our lives with you and hope you t...

I am working with a mother and daughter who will be sharing a home. It will take a village to find this unique property, and we could use your help. Here is what we are looking for: It can be any style, in or around Baltimore, concentrating on Ellicott City in zip codes 21042 and 21163. However, for the right home, we are open to other areas., They want to purchase a large single-family home with plenty of trees, privacy, and space for a master gardener. Privacy from other houses, no fences, and a stream would be nice. One to two acres would be ideal or adjacent to open land that gives the same feeling of privacy. And a pool is a  must, indoor, outdoor, or the room to build one.A few more desires include a first-floor primary bedroom, bath, and a pet-friendly neighborhood. A couple of bo...

There's no question, the best place for sushi in Howard County, MD is UMI Sushi right on Main Street in Ellicott City!I like to take my assistants out for a special dinner after (especially challenging but rewarding) transactions, and last week we stopped by UMI Sushi! We didn't make reservations, thinking we would arrive early enough on a weekday, but UMI was packed. There was immediate availability inside but if you go to UMI during the summer months, you have to sit outside and enjoy their lovely patio with views of the Tiber stream.  UMI's sushi is melt-in-your-mouth good, and super fresh (they gut and prepare the salmon themselves, every morning). Quality is consistent, I have never left UMI's feeling anything but happy, satisfied, and full (mixed with a bit of regret that the dinn...

This week's charming home is a condo that used to be a classroom in historic Ellicott City - a home that I just helped my client buy. This is a story of a perfect match, things that are just meant to be, the law of attraction and the happiest of endings, or new beginnings. More about that another time though because today, it's all about the condo that used to be a classroom! The Greystone, also known as the Schoolhouse among the locals, dates back to the first half of the 19th century, and was built to house an academy for men. It later became Rock Hill College and then an Elementary and High School for Ellicott City. The stone building with its 18 inch thick walls sourced from the local quarry burned out twice. After the second time, the shell reigned eerily above Main Street for about...

Yesterday was a glorious Spring day. The sun was out until late afternoon and it was warm enough to leave the sweater at home. It was the perfect excuse - not that we really needed one - to head to our most favorite ice cream location in Ellicott City's historic district. Park Ridge Creamery opened their windows for the season and lots of Main Street visitors took advantage of it. If you are familiar with Ellicott City's history and the devastation the two flooding events in 2016 & 2018 have caused, seeing Old Town bustling with activity is simply a beautiful sight! If there's one small town USA that deserves all the love and support, Ellicott City is it - Gorden Ramsay very much agreed, by the way! That would be another excuse - if you, or I, really needed one - to head to Main Street a...
