Great Buying Opportunities in Boston Real Estate! Posted on October 5, 2008 by bostonkayakguy  In an economic downturn, there always exists opportunity; you just need to know where to look! Urban areas that attract artists tend to be on the vanguard of development opportunity. Revitalizing neighborhoods with galleries, boutiques, and cafes attracts business and residents. Living close to jobs in affordable housing appeals to young professionals, growing families, and artists, among others.  In the past, artists have shown an uncanny ability to ferret out locations ripe for investment and opportunity. People wanting to downsize enjoy the proximity to cultural attractions, restaurants, and dwellings that are “green” and easy to maintain. I just sold a home on Bellevue Hill in West Roxbury...

The obliteration of the financial markets has consumers turning to alternative sources for their retail therapy. Consignment shops and second-hand stores save money, reduce the carbon footprint, and encourage people to live "green" through recycling.   Wellesley's very own consigment shop gets a nod, in "Thrifty and Nifty."   Turnabout Shoppe West of the city, the Turnabout Shoppe (30 Grove St., Wellesley, 781-237-4450) is a mecca for high-end consignment...                                                                                                            - Boston.com Thrifty and Nifty/Boston Globe     JOHN PRESCOTT -BostonKayakGuy     Top Real Estate Agent for more than 14 years, serving the real estate needs of  Wellesley, South Natick, Weston, Needham, Wayland, Newton, Framin...

Members of Congress have balked at "legacy vote."   Bailout has now failed and is off the table.   Not enough time has been available to build the political case for the bailout bill.   Bill contained no real caps on CEO parachutes.   At one point there was a 700 point drop in the stock market.   Small companies are likely to be among the first to feel the impact of the rejection of the bailout bill.   Where do we go from here?   Barney Frank is reportedly saying renegotiations will not continue until there's a chance to review the economic impact on the markets.   With the Jewish holiday, the soonest Congress would likely come back would be Thursday.   Back to the drawing board for now...   Related: Freddie Mac Gets A Subpoena and Barney Frank Gets A Reality Check Congressional Charade...

Westwood High School Joins the Fight Against Underage Drinking Posted on September 25, 2008 by bostonkayakguy  bostonkayakguy.wordpress.com — Shows like Gossip Girl, 90210, The Hills - all show a glimpse of teenage life that’s glamorous, and very very social. Top Wellesley Real Estate Agent John Prescott comments on a Boston high school that’s decided it won't ever resemble the scene from a TV script. BostonKayakGuy..John Prescott’s The MetWest Scene..reports. GOSSIP GIRL Sent from BlueOrganizer Lincoln-Sudbury High School’s quick response last week to the problems of underage drinking and students behaving badly, has already had an impact on other school systems. Joining this call to action is Westwood High School, whose principal Emily Parks sent out a letter to parents this past Wedn...

Posted on September 24, 2008 by bostonkayakguy  Book cover via Amazon “Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior,” so says Dr. Phil on a pretty regular basis. History buffs generally subscribe to this theory, and with the general upheaval facing Americans these days, historic novels are sure to be more popular than ever. And passionate, wrenching, fierce historical novels which make history come alive? Welcome local scribe Dennis Lehane into this popular genre with the release of his new 700 page tome, “The Given Day.” Five years in the making, “The Given Day” marks a departure for Lehane from his previous best-selling mysteries. But his favorite character, the character of Boston and its colorful inhabitants, once again takes center stage in his latest work. The Inside Tra...

John Prescott's...The MetWest Scene Posted on September 22, 2008 by bostonkayakguy  Hotel Indigo in Newton is a new boutique hotel concept, and is the first of its kind in Boston’s western suburbs. Plans to position its pool deck as a hip, happening entertainment venue… …came to a halt last week when Indigo’s reps pulled their request for a “weekday entertainment license,” after being notified that such a license is prohibited by Newton’s noise and entertainment regulations. The abrupt action calls into play whether the city of Newton should now take a long, hard look at its licensing regulations to determine if updating or revamping needs to take place. In a report in today’s Boston Globe Richard Chmielinski, the assistant city solicitor said, ” Newton officials would have to amend, m...

Posted on September 19, 2008 by bostonkayakguy | Edit Today’s Lincoln-Sudbury HS football game will see a marked difference from the past. In order for students to be able to attend Friday’s game, the School Superintendent has deemed that   students must have a parent in attendance.  This is in response to last week’s game where a number of students were drunk, many were drinking, and some had to be taken away to the hospital or to be charged with minor offenses, all of which taxed police and medical resources. This policy change is bound to have ramifications in the world of high school football. And while the policy is currently intended to be in effect for just Friday’s game, school officials will be watching closely. Reactions to the consequences of last week’s game behavior were mi...

Boston and its Expressway have been a major factor in every Bostonian’s life for as long as they’ve lived in the area. After all the turmoil, road changes, infighting, scandals, route changes, and collapsing components, what is perhaps one of the most noted aspects of the largest construction project in this nation’s history is turning a new chapter. Mayor Tom Menino has announced that the city of Boston is in the process of developing zoning guidelines around the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Posted on September 16, 2008 by bostonkayakguy The crisis on Wall St. is the latest in a series of blows impacting our nation’s small and mid-size businesses. The latest financial crisis is sure to result in even more stringent borrowing standards and tighter credit. “If you’re seeking a new line of credit, [the effect] will be instantaneous,” says Andrew Zacharakis, professor of entrepreneurship at Babson College in Wellesley. Interest rates will move higher and the bank-loan approval process will be more rigorous, he predicts, in an article in today’s Wall St. Journal. We’re sure to see a pullback in company spending and start-ups will have to look elsewhere to secure financing… Small Firms See Financing Harder To Get JOHN PRESCOTT -BostonKayakGuy       Top Real Estate Agent for more ...

Posted on September 15, 2008 by bostonkayakguy  Boston.com reports that the Wellesley School Committee has approved plans that call for no student parking at the high school for 4 years…that’s right…4 years! Beginning next September, there will be no student parking lot at the high school. Construction of the new high school will take place on the present high school parking lot and will necessitate students, faculty and staff needing to park elsewhere. Off site parking in 5 temporary lots has been secured for faculty and staff, according  Boston.com , but there will be no student parking available during the 4 year construction project. The Wellesley School District will be asked to double the school bus service starting next year. However the Wellesley Transportation Coordinator repor...
