Via Heather Totty ~ In the 1640s, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was dependent on England for the basic tools of everyday life.  At the time, hammers and nails and iron pots were shipped to the colony.  But Gov. John Winthrop soon insisted that the colony should learn to make these tools on its own.  Thus was born the Saugus, MA Iron Works, now a National Historic Site and Museum. Visitors can enjoy an open-air museum with working water wheels, a reconstructed blast furnace and a lovely natural setting on the Saugus River, which includes a half-mile nature trail.  An onsite blacksmith heats and mold metal, hammering out nails for visitors.  Visit the Saugus Iron Works.  More information: www.nps.gov/sair
